She is a lover of books, of litera- ture, and of the arts, and she has communicated this love to many. In her twelve years of service at St. Stephen’s, she has created a library of remarkable quality and diversity. She is a lover of young people; she is an open, youthful person who has never stopped growing. She has been unfailing and dedicated in her eagerness to help the students in the use of the library. She is the friend of many students and graduates who are better Human beings because they have known her. She has added a touch of grace and beauty to everything and everyone around her. Her presence and contribution have shaped and will al- ways be a part of St. Stephen’s School. These words can in no way express the debt we owe to Marian Pratt. Trustees Mr. J. Constitutional Revision Committee The duties of the CRC are deliberately vague; thus the members may meet often and do less. John MacFarland, Mike Childers, Tommy Wagner, and David Mac- Farland (1-r) are the hard-working members of this indubitably invaluable institu- tion. The 1967 Spartan Football team had one of the worst seasons that a Spartan team has had in many years. The season began with the feeling that it was to be a year of a championship. But the team did not have the apparent desire or luck to take the championship from the other conference teams. The team was plagued with early injuries that sidelined many of the starters and the first games were played with the less experienced players. By the time that the players who had been earlier starters returned, the season was too far gone for the team to begin to play together as a well trained unit. It was not until the last game that they played as a well trained unit and they won the season final. Assistant Coach Phipps discusses the situa- tion with Head Coach O’Brien. 135 John Barkley Second Letter Team Tri-Captain All Conference on Offense Halfback and Fullback Steve Goodson Fourth Letter Team Tri-Captain All Conference on Defense Fullback and Linebacker Barkley fakes into middle as Whitaker prepares to roll out. 136 Robert Henderson Second Letter All-Conference on Defense and Offense Team Tri-Captain Tackle Goodson makes a tackle as Henderson and Fonvielle move in to assist. 3? f Rick Fonvielle Second Letter All Conference on Defense and Offense Guard and Tackle 137 Ken Barnett Fourth Letter Wingback Brocky Brown Second Letter End John McFarland Second Letter Center Rex Leddy Second Letter Tackle Greg Whitaker Second Letter Quarterback Sidney Modiste Second Letter Split End 138 Jim Vance First Letter Tackle Josh Harrison First Letter Quarterback David Loiseaux First Letter Center Bill Kuhns First Letter Tackle David McFarland First Letter Halfback 139 Dorr Lcwright First Letter Guard Jan Pendergrass First Letter Tackle David Sumners First Letter Halfback and Linebacker Chris Weismann First Letter End Bruce Buckley First Letter Fullback 140 Henderson and Fonville move in to stop T.M.I. runner. This year, the Hockey team went to Casady to compete in the S.P.C. Tournament. The tournament was the first competition the girls had had except a game against Kinkaid. In Conference, the team lost only one game and that was to Casady. From ■ then on the Saints moved to win the consolation bracket. This was the most impressive showing that the Spartan Hockey team has ever been able to produce. The girls took the sport seriously and decided they could win the championship despite their preseason game loss against Kinkaid. The team claims that it was the close loss against Kinkaid that proved to them that they were a good team and that they could put a winning season together. The season record was 12 and 10. But it was a year played against the hardest and best competition found in the area. In conference play, the teams finished in a tie for second place. The only conference losses were at the hands of St. John's, St. Mark’s, and Casady. The losses were hard ones in conference because it was felt by everyone on the team that this was to be a good year, a year to take the conference. These conference losses were the worst because they were the most important games. But the year was a good one because we did come in second and we did prove that we could field a team to compete and compete well. r Steve Good son All Conference 1st Team Third Letter Henderson lights for the tip Clark Heidrick Second Letter Goodson takes easy lay-up against Lutheran. This year’s Spartan Soccer team had the best season in the five years that the sport has been played at the school. The season record was an impressive 7-4-1. This was the first time that the wins, losses and ties did not equal each other. In conference play the Spartan squad placed in a tie for fourth with St. Mark’s. This was an improvement over the previous year when the team placed next to last. The team lost no non conference games and won their own invitational tournament for the third year running. The only blemish on their non conference record was a tie with T.M.I. In conference they defeated the number one ranked team in a game played in the mud and rain. Two of their conference losses went to the two teams that tied for first. 154 Richard Burns takes a scissor kick against St. John’s. This year St. Stephen's fielded its first track team to really draw from all areas of the athletic program. In May the team traveled to Houston to take part in the S.P.C. meet. They had participated in several meets with T.S.D., Travis High, and San Marcos Academy but this was the only important meet of the season. The Spartans gained 18 points taking four second places and several more third and fourth places. The track program was a successful one and a good basis to build from in the following years. Dee Meador moves out to take third in the 880. 162 Robert Henderson places fourth in the dis- cus at the conference meet. 163 Above; L. A. Becker, Josh Harrison, Robert George, Chris Dougherty, Andy Fraser, Jim Butler, Tommy Touhy, Bill Woodward Tennis made its appearance as a varsity sport this year. Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams made a great deal of improvement during the season. The year ended with a trip to Houston for the S.P.C. tournament. The Spartan boys were outclassed at the conference going against some of the best competition in the state. Mary Napier was the standout in our girls’ team placing second after a first round encounter with one of the best players in the south. The team is young and will be certain to make a good showing next year. I 164 i fmmm r • ■ 'V- -flli Mary Napier shows her championship form. Below; Bonnie New, L. A. The girls’ Volleyball team participated in Conference for the first time this year. The girls went to Houston practically an untried and untested bunch. In the Tourna- ment, they lost the first set of games only to win later and replay the team they had lost to earlier. At Houston, the girls placed fourth over all. The leadership of the two team captains, Sean Gardner and Kathy Ellis, proved to be one of the most important factors in the girls’ victories. At the end of the tournament, both Captains were named to the All-Conference team. This was a year of a good beginning of Volleyball and the coming years hopefully will be better as experience is gained. 168 The ‘B’ Team Bottom: Mary Pincoffs, Phebe Davol, Tari Shattock. Leah May. COMPLIMENTS OF MIKE’S GANG 190 TO JIM TUCKER In this school where we are blasted by routine and the closeness of the community eats at our emotions, there must be a figure whom we can approach when our clay-faced patience crum- bles before anxieties. It is he who blankets us when even time seems out to roast the logic from our minds. We find in him the willingness to speak with us honestly and to devote himself to our problems when others would avoid us. Now we have lost this man who commits himself utterly to people without losing the iden- tity of each individual. Although we worry that we may have sometimes taken advantage of such goodness, we can only hope that he has been aware of our love for him which we attempted to express to him here. —Class of ’70 FRED NAGLE AND COMPANY Insurance Specialists 819 Scarborough Building 477-6701 Austin, Texas 78701 PRINTING ENGRAVING OFFICE SUPPLIES AUSTIN Q- L STATIONERY COMPANY 510 BRAZOS STREET • AUSTIN, TEXAS 78701 478-4601 heading in new directions . . . heading in new directions through progress.
