Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1967 volume:

fc And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; 2 Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Awesome in stature, deliberate and persevering, this legendary colossus of the prairjes roamed the Southwest throughout the 1 9th century. In contemporary times, a child must visit the zoo to see this remembrance of his fad- ing heritage. But in one lonely outpost, in the lifeless wastes of the Southwest, where civilization penetrates thinly and culture fights for life, the buffalo holds his own. This is the story of that herd and the prairie town near which it grazed. Gene Addison 9 Betsy Barnes 9 Tracy Brown 9 John Burford 9 Kim Cantey o 9 Cathy Carrington 9 Monty Carter 9 Jan Considine 9 cs By the Fall of 62, the young had congregated to form a herd of their own. Admittedly, not all of the 1 6 who were to make history looked like buffalo: there was a mouse, a panda bear, a boxer, a dachshund, a monkey, a hippopotamus, a bunny, a stool pigeon, and a dodo. But all followed the old head bison who had taken the protection of the young upon himself. In this, their first year, the new dance hall was built and the first to use it were the buffalo, in honor of the great western hero, Sadie Hawkins. With few such in- terruptions, they grazed the Spring of '63 from the Clark Ranch to Newman's Waterhole thus passing their first year as a herd. And in the town, in that yesteryear when men were men and might made right, crime was so common that it was all that the town's peace loving lawmen, W. H. Marx and M. S. McMullan could do to keep law and order. At times, notably the slaughter of the innocents on Ray Charles Day, even these two were overpow- ered and a posse under Justice Guerin came to the rescue. In the early Fall of '63 before the first snow, the building of the railroad forced the herds to come together and finally our small herd picked up such numbers as to insure survival. At the same time, the townfolk instituted a new policy designed to restrict per- sonal freedom and to surpress initiative. The Reign of Uncertainty was ushered in by the wild notes of the on-bounds bell, and playful parolees turned from wat- erhole and sport and charged for the hill. Before long, the town’s only cafe began serving such unpalatable dishes that the folk had to rise en masse to change the situation. Food was also scarce for the herd that Spring, especially in the area of Westwood Pool, but they managed to make it through the year with few casualties. The Fall of '64 brought the opening of a new section of railroad and, with it, more concentration of the buffalo as well as celebration in the town. The weath- er was especially wet that year and probably the most memorable event for the townfolk was the mudfight in front of Freeman Rooming House in which almost half the citizens participated. A saloon moved to town and at last people could get their provisions somewhere besides the cafe. ■c 6 sauof 9| pD|g $ uosuqof |io6oqv 6 pjDMopi |!Hd 6 iserry i_roucn y uenms sarcio Y Eric Gierspeck 9 Money Green y tyn namrnon Ellen Justice 9 Molly Magee 9 Janet Meek 9 Robert Newcombe 9 Renn Rhodes 9 Towne Smith 9 Jay Terk 9 Larry Weeks 9 Peace was shattered again, though, when an old fellow had a skiff stolen one night. It posed no problem to Marshall Foster who, in no time, had all the culprits but one rounded up with the help of an accomplished Indian scout. The herd once again moved into the dance hall only to be driven out by the sudden eruption of a dormant volcano. Spring came early in '65 and the herd, some of which were beginning to sprout horns, spent their time lazily grazing on the banks of the Narrows of the Blanco River. '65 was a lively year in the town. A new movie house opened and a print shop was established while the town celebrated its 1 5th year with the opening of the Deluxe Gregg Hotel. The menfolk decided to make it an occasion and take the day off. All left early one morning without telling their women or the Marshall. And they were all arrested when they returned, on charges of disturbing the ten- sion, and fined heavily. A number of buffalos were caught and harnessed in early '66 to help out in the Talent Show Celebration, and a good time was had by all. Others meanwhile worked to improve the waterhole they shared with the townspeople, and by sum- mer it was dug, cleared out and grassed over for the year to come. But all wore the symbolic blue and white blanket, a characteristic of the herd in '66. In the Fall of 66, it became evident that the townfolk had given themselves over to enjoyment. They abandoned most of their nightly religious observances and many of the women wore men's clothing exposing their knees and shoulders right out in the street. Much of their time was devoted to new games such as ten- nis, hockey, volleyball, soccer, and running long races. And, thanks to the buffa- lo, the townspeople were able to study in their own rooming houses. The buffalo, educated by mother nature, had more difficulty in assimilating experience and pooled their ignorance to form the Elephant Club, inspired no doubt by the devotion to books shown by several members of the herd working after hours in the lending library. 01 5jJDDOJDS 0L 3 )jng aizzoy J3|Hn8 iqwofl 01 Bob Wells 9 then 10 Nancy Arrowsmith 10 Jim Billingsley 10 Webb Breeding 10 Randy Crowe 10 Vicki Gasche 10 Susan Haisten 10 Daryl House 10 Steve Lantrip 10 Janice Moody 10 Ken Olm 10 In the course of its brief history, the herd was joined by several more strange looking buffs. There was, for example, a snake, a pig, an elephant, a flamingo, a penguin, a deer, a Sugar Bear, and a Daryl-bird. The herd of 1967, numbering 43 in all, headed at last for the happy hunting grounds outside, as the Great Buffalo sadly waved a last goodbye. by class gossips, Randy Parten Katy Neale ccrvifiianna i ------------aj---------lilftfTVfY )OPf----Qi NANCY ARROWSMITH Austin, Texas University of California at Santa Cruz ROWLAND RUGELEY BACHMAN “Rugeley Bay City, Texas Haverford College Phipps Squeaks 65- 67, Honor Roll 65, Yellow Streak Traveler '65- 66, NMSQT Letter of Commendation 66, Drama Club '66, DEACON 66- 67, Inspector 67, H.M.F.S. 67, Dorm Council '67, Freeman Dart Club 67, SPARTAN 67, Choir '67, Lord High Beetle of L.A.B.E.C. Head coach Mike O'Brien s team bounced back well from the defeats and won its last three games by large mar- gins. The Big Red defeated St. John's for the first time in over six years, and then ran over Lutheran in it's final game, to give them a 2-3 record in Southwest Preparatory Conference play. Standouts in the SPARTAN back field this year were quarterbacks Steve Hines and Bobby Tamminga, fullback Steve Goodson, and halfback Ken Barnett. Goodson averaged over eight yards per carry in leading the SPAR- 122 TAN ground gainers. Jack O Quin, Kerry Crouch, Robert Henderson, and Bill Phillips all turned in fine perform- ances on the line. Goodson and Tamminga led the SPARTAN defense, which gave up 126 points. Captains for this year s squad were Kerry Crouch and Bobby Tamminga. With plenty of material returning, the SPARTANS can look forward to another fine season next year. At times, the SPARTANS played brilliantly, as at the S.P.C. South Zone Tournament. At others, bad defense and poor shooting lost several games for the Big Red. This year's schedule included not only traditional games with Allen, Concordia, TSD, and San Marcos, but also contests with 2A powers Del Valle and Canyon. With the S.P.C. basketball conference enlarged to eight teams, the SPARTANS played three games in Houston and four in Oklahoma City. Tall St. Mark's was again an unrivaled power, but the SPARTANS played well in all other games, earning a 3-4 conference record. Steve Goodson and John Craig, the team's leading scorers, re- ceived 2nd team and Honorable Mention All Conference respectively, while Clarke Heidrick and Sidney Modiste, the team's defensive standouts, were named for Honorable Mention recognition. All in all, it was a good season for providing experience for younger players, while ending with a respectable record. 128 Steve Hines sights in a jump shot against Concordia VARSITY RECORD - Won 9 Lost 14 SSS — 41 Concordia..................42 SSS - 45 Del Valle..................55 SSS — 69 Allen Academy..............42 SSS — 69 Allen Academy..............32 SSS — 41 Concordia..................53 SSS — 67 Canyon.....................73 SSS — 47 San Marcos Academy........70 SSS — 50 Moulton....................65 SSS — 55 Blanco.....................49 SSS - 39 TSD........................64 SSS — 50 San Marcos Academy........58 SSS - 58 TMI........................53 SSS - 67 Blanco.....................53 SSS - 46 Del Valle..................75 SSS - 84 TMI........................61 SSS — 55 Canyon.....................76 Mr. Wilson, Mr. Tipton, Mr. Tucker watch action CONFERENCE GAMES SSS — 52 Kinkaid........................43 SSS — 60 St. John's.....................66 SSS — 75 Lutheran.......................81 SSS — 44 Casady.........................62 SSS — 53 St. Mark's.....................90 SSS — 55 Greenhill......................39 SSS - 44 Holland Hall...................37 Bill Phillips jumps center for SSS BILL PHILLIPS - senior Center third letter JOHN CRAIG — senior Guard third letter All Conf. Whereas the St. Stephen's invitational tournament was the high point of the 1966 year, it was only the beginning for the 1967 team. Following a perfect 2-0 sweep of the invitational tournament, the SPAR- TANS went to conference tournaments in Houston and Oklahoma City. The SPARTANS faced the best teams in the area, winning 2, and losing several others by close margins. Standouts in the conference games were Jon Pender- grass, voted to the All Conference first team, and Jack O Quin, Ken Barnett, Steve Townsend, and Richard Burns, who received honorable mention recognition. Returning to St. Stephen s the SPARTANS faced the St. Edward s team on KHFI-TV, in the first live televised soc- cer game in the Southwest. The SPARTANS played fine soccer, and forced the game into a penalty kick duel which the SPARTANS won when the SPARTAN goalie, Steve Townsend, allowed only two of the five kicks to enter the goal, and Jon Pendergrass sank three straight. The SPARTAN team this year was distinguished by their dedication to the demands of the sport, and they have begun to show the beginnings of a real championship team. 134 THE COACHES: Bob Phipps, L. The SPARTANS often played with seven under- classmen on the field. Although the SPARTANS at times played fine baseball, poor fielding and inconsistent pitching plagued the team throughout the season. The season's highlight was certainly the conference win over Kinkaid on April 21 st. Three weeks later, the SPAR- TANS travelled to Dallas for the SPC finals, and lost three close games after taking early leads. With a certain amount of luck, the SPARTANS could have come close to repeating their SPC conference win. The Big Red did, however, place two players on the all conference first team: John Craig at Utility, and Jon Pendergrass in the outfield. With 10 out of 14 lettermen returning, the SPARTANS can look forward to an excellent season next year. 138 ALL CONFERENCE First Team outfielder First Team utility infielder JON PENDERGRASS SEASON RECORD JOHN CRAIG sss - 3 Johnson City 11 SSS - 12 TMI . . . 6 sss - 1 St. Mary's 9 SSS - 0 Austin “B . . 10 sss - 0 Johnson City 9 SSS - 0 Camp Gary . . . 6 sss - 10 Marble Falls 1 SSS - 3 Dripping Springs . . . 5 sss - 1 Marble Falls 9 sss - 0 Canyon 9 CONFERENCE GAMES sss - 6 Camp Gary 7 sss - 3 St. Ed's 6 SSS - 5 Kinkaid . . . 1 sss - 1 St. Mary's 4 SSS - 6 Casady . . . 9 sss - 10 Kinkaid 1 SSS - 6 Holland Hall . . . 7 sss - 4 Camp Gary 9 SSS - 2 St. Mark's . . . 6 Clarke Heidrick, Brocky Brown, and John Barkley watch action from SPARTAN dugout Head Coach Robert Foster gives advice to Seelinger during home game 140 John Craig pitches to Kinkoid hotter Coach Foster points toward home as Pendergrass rounds third Greg Whitaker watches as John Craig connects with the bases loaded against Kinkaid 141 The SPARTAN dugout, John Craig, and Jon Pendergrass watch Terry Seelinger bat against Kinkaid 142 Clarke Heidrick prepares for peg to second base B” TW WAS FINE SEASON Front row Charlie Cobb, David Sumners, Ted Wright, Jim Moers, Jfrn Crosby, Philip Orr; back row Bill Kuhns, Dorr Lew- right, David Loiseaux, Stephen Hearn, Randy Navarre, Jimmy Tucker, coach Spuhler ’JVY’ SWOU GOO POTENTIAL 143 Front row John Gasche, Philip Orr, Jimmy Borglum, Chris Edmonds, Rocky Reagan; middle row Jimmy Tucker, Bob Butler, Jeff Glanz, Robert McGinnis; back row Bill Lewis, Jay Phillips, Jim Butler, Abner Burnett 1966-1967 CHEERLEADERS 1967 GIRL’S VOLLEYBALL Firs! row Jane Dryden, Jessica Buhler, Mary Bachman, Tori Shattuck; middle row Mrs. Tipton, loci Orgain, Gigi Johnson, Marcia White, Sarah Johnson, Miss Carver; hack row Sally MacConnell, Mary Pincoffs, Ann Johnson, Lucy Weeks THE SEASON The first year of girl's volleyball at SSS must be regarded as a building one. After weeks of practice sessions, stressing teamwork and findamentals, the girls played a full line-up of games in the early Spring with such teams as Round Rock, Del Valle, and Dripping Springs. Although the A and B teams com- bined won only one game, Coaches Miss Carver and Mrs. Tipton said that valuable experience was gained which would help the team in the coming years. 145 1966 GIRL’S HELD NOCXBY Standing (coach) Miss Carver, Margaret Shepperd, Luci Orgain, Lyn Hammon, Bambi Buhler, Su Haisten, Cathy Crittenden, Molly Magee, Dodo Garcia, (coach) Mrs. Tipton; bottom row Ellen Payne, Jan Considine, Susan Flato, Sara Clark, Ann O’Brien, Sara Legett, Marcia White, Mary Napier, Norie Clarke, Katy Neale, Pru Pitkin, Mike Childers, Jessica Buhler, Daryl House THE SEASON Varsity sports for girls, new this year at St. Stephen's, began with field hockey in the fall. After many practice sessions under the direction of Miss Carver and Mrs. Tipton, the SPARTANS hosted St. Mary's Hall of San Antonio and Hockaday of Dallas. The girls won both of these encounters, and built up confidence for the S.P.C. tourney at Hockaday. After losing their first game to tournament champion Casady, St. Stephen's defeated Holland Hall of Tulsa and Ft. Worth Country Day School to finish first in the consola- tion division. With Spring practice sessions the girls have begun preparing for next Fall and another fine year. 146 ORIS IMN OONS ATION TOURNEY IN DALLAS Dr. Becker chats with team members at Dallas tourney Action at mid-field in Casady game Jan Considine takes shot at St. Mary's Hall goal Su Haisten, Jan Considine, and Sara Legett converge on ball in St. Mary's Hall game y,S Casady game action: Dodo Garcia and Luci Orgain defend SPAR- TAN goal 1967 £PARW TENMfS BOY'S TEAM Standing coach L.
