«11 Dedication Fifteen years ago a dream became reality when St. Stephen’s Episcopal School began its first academic year. That year there were 54 students and 7 faculty members. In the years since that time the student body has grown to 206 and the faculty has increased to 25 members. It is, then, not to an individual but to St. Stephen’s that we dedicate this, the 1966 Deacon. LEFT: Manager Stroud Kelly. The 1965 Spartan football team posted a 5-2-1 record that bettered all previous season marks set at SSS in the past eight years. During the year the Big Red continued to depend on its traditional ground game offense within a flip-flop wing formation and upon a stunting and adjusting defense. The Spartans were never shut out and they never gave up. Spirit and effort reached a high in the Troup game which was perhaps the best played one of the season. It was indeed disheartening when St. Stephen's dropped those two mid-year encounters to Kinkaid and St. Mark’s. But, as Mr. Riggs, who directed the total Spartan attack for the first time, had put it; the test of a good team was not that it could win, but that it could come back after defeat and win again. The last three games, and in particular the T.M.I. game, demonstrated that St. Stephen’s had such a team. Standouts on the offensive line this year were Kerry Crouch, Bill Newman, Louis Buck and Bobby Tamminga. Mike Bell and Jimmy Musselman were the workhorses of the Spartan backfield. Exceptional defensive plays were most often turned in by Larry Weeks and Billy Phillips at tackle, Robert Sumners and Charlie Campbell in the defensive secondary, and Andy Wright and Jimmy Musselman, the conference’s best linebackers. The pride of this year’s team, however, extended beyond the individual performances to the efforts and cooperation of the entire squad and to the spirit of the student body, which backed this team in its drive and desire to win. The Season In his first year as head basketball coach of the SSS varsity Hap Spuhler worked out one of the most rigorous schedules that a Spartan squad has ever faced. Besides the tra- ditional games with St. Edward’s, San Marcos, T.S.D., and Allen additional ones were planned with other local teams, including Hutto and Del Valle who achieved ex- cellent season records. St. Stephen’s entered two intra-area tournaments at Roundrock and Bastrop and finished second in the consolation tournaments both times. Spartan guard Mike Bell made the Roundrock All-Tournament team while high scoring Charlie Campbell was placed on the Bastrop A” team. One of the last Spartan encounters was with 4-A powerhouse Austin High. As was expected the Maroons made it a rather one-sided affair, but Coach Spuhler was pleased with the overall effort against the far taller Austin team. The conference, as in the recent past, was almost entirely dominated by St. Mark’s this year. With two 6’6” starters and an average team height near 6’2” St. Mark’s gradually pulled away from the small but nonetheless inspired St. Stephen’s team who put on a valiant first quarter stand. The Spartans’ only conference win was against Casady, but they did manage to place two starters on the Second Team All-Conference. They were fittingly enough Mike Bell and Charlie Campbell, the season's leading scorers. E OUKD LEFT: Coach Spuhler and Steve Olsen look on during the St. Mark's game near the season’s end. When interscholastic competition began last year, it was looked upon by many as providing a recreational transition between football and baseball for non-basketball players. Though it still serves this purpose, soccer at St. Stephens is becoming more and more a sport in its own right. The game is growing both in participation and enthusiasm. This year the soccer team played a demanding nine game schedule against some of the better central Texas teams and ended up with a 3-3-3 season record. The year’s highlight came when the team defeated its two arch-rivals, St. Edward’s and Allen Academy, to capture the St. Stephen’s Invitational Soccer Tournament Championship. This year’s eleven man team was renowned for its aggressive rough attack and its hard-nosed defense. Standouts on the forward line were Buck, Pendergrass, Tamminga, and Hodgson. The defensive halfbacks Moran, Lockhart, and Gierspeck and the fullbacks O’Quinn and Newman turned in many fine plays. .However, David Barnett, the goalie, deserves special attention for his consistently outstanding performances in a difficult-to- master position. Already soccer fans are looking forward to next year and the entrance of St. Stephen's into the Southwest Preparatory Conference. 107 Louis Buck, the Spartan right wing, intimidates Allen’s goalie. Rex Leddy heads one back to Bob Haslanger as John McGinnis puts some- thing on the goalkeeper. 109 Baseball 1966 Coming into the full zone tournament this year's Spartan baseball team had a modest record close to .500. They had had a rather unspectacular season, and the team could have been described as only mediocre as far as talent was concerned. But when the SSS team took the home field on May 13th, they were determined to defeat not just Fort Worth but all opposition to the tournament championship. As they left the diamond the following day, they knew they had succeeded. They had beaten Fort Worth Country Day School on a no-hitter by Charlie Campbell. They edged St. Mark's (5-4) in a closely fought struggle that was marked by three fabulous defensive plays on the part of Robert Sumners and John Craig. Finally, they took Casady 7-4 on the timely hitting of Musselman, Buck, and Craig. No small amount of praise could be spent on these boys, their coaches, or their outstanding play during the Tournament. But, then again, when you're champions, you don’t really need praise; the memories are sufficient. Wild Man Tamminga looks for his pitch.
