Recovering a Red fumble on the opening kickoff, the Lions quickly scored. Fighting back, the Spartans scored on a Vaughn Special which totaled over fifty-five yards. The Lions led the whole way, however, and came out on top, 28-6. 5.5.5. 13 KINKAID 22 In their third conference game, the Spartans lost a hard-fought battle to the Falcons of Kinkaid, 22-13. The game was scoreless until the last minutes of the second quarter when the Falcons took the lead, 6-0. In the second half, the Spartans scored twice. Kinkaid scored again bringing the count to 14-13, in favor of the Falcons. The Reds then recovered their own on-sides kick, but the referee said it was touched before it had gone ten yards. Because of this, the Falcons took over and ended the Spartan hopes by scoring again. The final gun sounded with Kinkaid ahead 22-13. A Tense moment 5.5.5. 30 LUTHERAN 12 The Spartans finally pulled through and raunched the Lutheran Pioneers 30-12 in front of a delighted Parents-Day crowd. The Red Team cut loose and Mo Hines threw a 35 yard pass to Steve Vaughn who ran the final 15 yards to paydirt. The Pioneers came back and scored on a three-yard dive. The Spartans scored three more times and led 27-6 at the half. In the second half, Thomas Sumners kicked the first successful Spartan field goal in history. The Pioneers returned a S.S.S. punt fifty-five yards, but the game ended with a happy Spartan team in the lead 30-12. 5.5.5. 0 St. JOHNS 13 The Spartans lost a close one to the St. John's Rebels 13-0 in Houston. The two teams fought hard but the Rebels squeezed a T.D. in at the end of the second quarter and led at the half 6-0. The third quarter was scoreless, but the Rebels, led by the rushing .of Dan Van Winkle, scored again in the fourth. The Spar- tans began a drive with Mo Hines hitting almost everything he threw, but time ran out on the fired-up Spartan team, and the game ended with the Red team on the bottom. 5.5.5. 26 ALLEN 12 The Spartans whipped the Allen Ramblers in their final game of the season to wind up with a 3-4-1 re- cord for the season. The Ramblers were the first to score, and it looked as if we might lose again for a few minutes. Then Mo opened up and completed a 40 yard pass to Steve Vaughn tying the score. John Porter recovered Thomas Sumners’ on-sides kick and on the next play Thomas went 40 yards to score. Steve scored again and caught a pass from Mo for a two-point conversion. The score at the half was 20-7. In the third quarter, Vaughn raced 60 yards for another Red score. The Spartan defense relaxed for a while and the Ramblers scored again, but the Spartans finished their season with a win and came out on top 26-12. 125 BACK ROW: Chris Hines, assistant coach, the Rev. Trailing by nine at the end of the first quarter and by four at the end of the half, the Spartans took the lead at the third quarter, 38-37. As the last seconds of the game ticked away, the Spartans were behind by one point, 49-48. When the final buzzer sounded, John Porter was fouled. His free shot tied the score up, causing the game to go into overtime. The Spartans then burst into the lead and scored eight points to the Lions’ one, and the game finally ended with a SSS victory. The next day the Red team defeated the Casady Cyclones, 49-47. The Spartans stayed in the lead until the last quarter when they went behind by one point. Mo Hines sank a free shot to tie it up, and Steve Vaughn's field goal in the last five seconds gave the Spartans a first place in the Northern Tournament. SPC Full Tournament Two weeks later in the SPC Full Tournament on the St. Stephen's campus, the Redmen downed the Lutheran Pioneers, 54-44, to stretch their con- ference win record to three games. The lead was in the hands of the Pioneers at the end of the first half, but the Spartans outscored the Pioneers by thirteen points in the third quarter and led 42-31 going into the final quarter. The next day the Spartans suffered their only conference defeat when they lost to the Falcons of Kinkaid, 51-46. The Falcons led throughout the game and the final burst of effort in the last quarter was not enough to put the Red team ahead. The same evening, the Spar- tans beat the St. John's Rebels, who led until the half, 46-43. In Red games, Steve Vaughn was almost consistently high point man, with Mo Hines a close second. The SPC Full Tournament ended with the Spartans sharing of the cham- pionship with the Falcons of Kinkaid. Thomas Newman, coach, Tommy Goodson. Robert Phipps, Mr. Thomas Newman. The Athletic Council is a new idea at St. Stephen's this year. It is composed of five members of the faculty, each one representing a different part of the school. Mr. Paul G. Bode, co-chairman with Mr. Robert F. Foster, represents the Administration; Mr. Thomas Newman represents Varsity Athletics; Mrs. Robert Foster, Girls’ Physical Ed- ucation; and the Rev. Robert Phipps, Intramural Athletics and Boys’ Physical Education. All five members of the group coach one or more groups in the Physical Education program. The Council, with many various duties to perform during the school year, was set up mainly to create a P.E. program which would be suitable for the school and still not interfere with the academic portion of school life. The Council is proving to be a valuable addition to the school and will very likely continue throughout coming years. 135 Burkett winds up for a curve. As far as Conference play went, the Spartans had a perfect record. Their first win was a forfeit by Kinkaid of Houston. Their second conference win came when they defeated the St. Marks Lions of Dallas 7 to 1. The red team started off slowly and allowed St. Marks to score their only run in the first inning by committing two errors. Joe Burkett pitched a fine game, allowing only two hits; the rest of the Spartan team took over from there. In the third inning, Mo Hines singled and Steve Vaughn got on base by a Lion error, and then Joe Burkett bunted them in on a double squeeze. In the fourth inning, Hines, Clebsch, who was running for Burkett, Musselman, Considine, and Wallace all scored to end the scoring for both sides. The game ended with the Spartans totaling 7 runs on 9 hits and 2 errors, and the Lions with 1 run on 2 hits and 2 errors. The next day the Spartans de- feated the Casady Cyclones 6 to 0. George Paxton pitched a 1-hit shut-out and earned a place on the All-Conference team. In the third inning, Hines, Burkett and Clebsch, who ran for Paxton scored. Thomas Sumners and Mo Hines scored in the fourth and Burkett scored in the fifth. St. Stephens ended with 6 runs on 4 hits and 2 errors while Casady had 0 runs on 1 hit and 4 errors. The Spartan team won the Conference Championship by defeating all their op- ponents and placed six people on the All-Conference team. R. £ Sumners guards his base.
