Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1961 volume:

The basic purpose of St. Stephen’s Episcopal school is to proclaim the good news that Jesus Christ, who was crucified, is risen and that through Him all men may become partakers now of everlasting life. Its pur- pose, therefore, is the same as that of the Church. By placing the chapel on the highest ground overlooking the campus, the school commits itself to the hope that life will radiate from this center. It is with great regret that we see them go, for in the last five years they have penetrated the pericardial membranes of all Spartans. As a teacher of Chemistry and Biology, Mr. Kingsbury is noted for his exacting thoroughness and his candid class discussions. (Our favorite was on the “Mating Habits of the Wolf Spider.”) Mrs. Kings- bury, who’s specialty was Math, has been a won- derful counselor for all girls, especially for those who had “dropped a stitch.” For their interest in and concern for the students and the school, and particularly for their wonderful instruction in class, the 1961 Deacon is dedicated to the Donald Kings- burys ... we consider their leaving a “most un- fortunate occurrence.” 7 Faculty and Administration 8 9 'Would he, would he what?” “Everyone made Hundreds, naturally.” ALLEN W. Lnder the somewhat impressive title of “The-Executive-Committee-of-the-School- Council,” the people pictured above, or most of them, met faithfully on Sunday afternoons to cuss and discuss the problems of the Hill. Between debates on such vital questions as the popularity of Raisin Bran over Cocoa-Krispies, whether or not “Lassie, Come Home” was a suitable movie for SSS intellectuals, and for whom the adopted stray dog should be named, the committee managed to institute the School- keeping Committee, instigate revision of the Headmaster’s Trophy system of com- petition, and rewrite the Student Handbook for 1961-1962. 22 The Discipline Committee at work: While Bunny was at the Breakfast Club, Stuart attended a garden party. Never very earth shaking in our contributions, or as a Junior would put it, “too much earth shaking to be had by us,” we’ve continued to use our “Sophomore Picnic Grounds” with great regularity. In the early part of 1961 we entertained the school at a real beat pad, and in April, the streets of Italy and canals of Venice were the setting for one of the best Spring Formals ever. History of the Class of ’61 Or How the Classiest Class Became The story begins in the year 1956. There was sweet little Mark Fries, Eddie Muse (who didn’t know much about Latin, but who knew what he liked), Mike Kittley, Judy Kellersburger (who thrived on what she liked), Claudia Cunningham, Terry Malick (Who was picked on), Verna Bealle, and Kenny Miller. Terry Malick failed an English theme but made high honors for the year anyway. Mark, the intellectual in ski boots, also made high honors. This was the year of the “terrarium project.” Sweet, little, Mark; cut, little, Terry; and little, little Eddie went to gather ants for the project. Running across the ant bed scooping furiously, Mark stumbled and fell. The aristocratic intellectual became downright vulgar. Later the project was abandoned, as others would be in the future. The next year saw the addition of Johm Ainsworth, Kathy Bluitt, Mike Cooper, Bill Daniel, Sarah Ford, Billy Gammon, Linda Montgomery, Eleanor Pauls, David Roosevelt, and Carol Runion to the class. John Ainsworth, machete in hand, one day took a playful swing at Uncle Lou, also the Reverend Louis J. Levinson. Ains- worth missed by one half an inch. Everyone laughed nervously, thankful that Uncle Lou was a clergyman. Also that year Terry and Ed (who had grown one fourth an inch), had a titanic struggle to determine who sat in the front desk in History, from which the instructor’s notes were most visible. Nobody knows who won, but Eddie “hit the floor” that night, and Terry followed him the next night. The next year, 1958, marked the official entry of the classiest class into high school, and there were many newcomers to revitalize the strain. These were: Tom Baker, John Bentley, Phillip Breland, Frank Buhler, Cheryl Eaton, Dorrit Effinger, Susan Elliott, Suzy Henna, John Jordan, John Long, Teri Lovell, Alice Jurecka, John Mackintosh, George Marsh, Rebecca Marshall, Nicky Morris, David Myrick, Winslow Pratt, John Morrison, David Roosevelt, Winston Smith, Sue Strube, Linda Vaughn, and Johnny Walker. All the boys except John Mackenstein (who refused to buy shoes) played J.V. football with Mr. Johnny Gates Mothershed. Terry again re- ceived high honors and therefore was modulated, while Mark got seconds and John Mackintosh, thirds. John Long gave lemonade to Billy Gammon, another Latin scholar; and John Bentley frequently woke up with a mouthful of shaving cream. There was a pillow fight riot, after which Billy Gammon jumped into a bed full of chair. Always, during the night time uprisings, the pass words of danger were either “fuga bene” or “Mr. Dillon,” but never F. D. which was much too obvious. This was the year that Terry lit Mark’s foot with lighter fluid, and Mark lit Terry’s hair in 94 return. This was the year of the Hand Latin class, Admirable Admiral Allen’s Algebra class, and, not least, the year of ninth grade religion classes. Toilet paper was found under clergy hats; cuckoos came from closets; and work parties were thrown at everyone in general. Susan Elliott learned about the Waterfront. Two ninth grade boys, Fred and Davette, were the first subjects of “wallian” social probation. Paco demonstrated the hook slide in baseball and broke his leg as a result. David Roosevelt and Kee-boo founded the primitive colony of Salem. Nu- merous fast draw contests were held with Wooly, who inevitably got his crackers back. The class motto, “Ad Silvam,” was originated during this formative period; also, Senor Glubule introduced the idea of building the school a golf course, so we actually worked a total of three hours with the idea of creating another Palm Springs in mind. Then we stopped, and have not been idealistic since. Our only project from that time has been the annual luminario installation, which is, in itself, a quite difficult task. Then came the tenth grade year, which was actually the first Senior year for the classiest class. Who can deny that, even at that time, we were the largest and nosiest class, as well as the best represented on the varsity athletic fields, not to mention our winning the Headmaster’s trophy from the approving 12th grade. Again it may be possible to trace the impetus to an influx of fresh young bloods: Stuart Byles, Mars Bowman, Mary Brewer, Alice Crawford, Jack Curlee, Jim Dear, Nancy Dulaney, Vicki George, John Gerhart, Mary Hardwicke, Mary Henderson, Mike Hershey, Susie House, Jim Howse, Jim Hudson, Larry Jolly, Joey Judge, Garret Kratzig, Ray Lynch, Philip Milbourne, Terry Moor, Sandy Noble, Florence Owens, John Porter, Jim Romberg, June Bug Turner, Roberta Wierman, Lou Wilson, and Philip Winsborough joined the corps. The proficiency of the class was reflected by John Jordan and Terry Malick’s broom-handling and other sabotage tactics (just ask Melvin) or in Joey’s bed-warming (and burning) ability with a hairdryer; or in June Bug’s method of spreading out the Vienna sausage supply “to make them last” by exploding the can. Susie House’s marathon began. Wooly failed to foil a dorm switch. Mr. Hand began to light his cigarettes, throw them away, and then smoke the matches. He finally solved the problem; he started smoking chalk, and writing on the board with the cigarette. And there were the organized book steals, intended to arouse Mr. Melcher. (You cheated, you lied, . . .) Also, Screamin’ Laurie learned that rain was really Beech Nut and that her age (3) minus two cause great merri- ment when illustrated manually. We stole Ive’s shoes and the twelfth graders showed us how not to steal the bell. We really had to gain experience about all phases of school life, for we were destined to be Seniors again the next year. In our capital senior class of 1960 were some new go-getters. These were: Louis Allen, Ellen Boddy, Mac Bums, Pattie Donaldson, John Dulles, Bill Freeborne, Pete Generelly, Pat McLean, Diane Maxson, Mary Jean Pillatt, George Seaman, Walter Weathers, Louise Seelinger, Paul Swentzel and Bay (Marlboro) Turnbull. We started off with a great big growl and a five-three football season. Then we at- tained a fifteen-seven basketball record. This, with our baseball record, was to be the best combined record in the history of the school. Again the teams were almost entirely composed of Seniors (’61-ers). And we (yawn) again won the Headmaster’s trophy without enough competition to make it interesting. The boys for the first time became aware and apprehensive of the cave-women Amazons. The vamps were descending like fall-out. Susie House’s marathon ended at Thanksgiving. We remembered our lessons and stole the bell correctly. Then it was stolen from us. Then a canoe was taken from the Bohn property. We think the girls in East Gillette did it. This was the year of sign transplanting. STOP signs were located in very interesting places in the dorms. GREEN STAMPS was added to a JESUS SAVES sign in Houston (Pershingville). One day someone discovered a La Grange city limits sign in Ives, accompanied by a Convent Parking Only sign; no one knows how it got there. This was also the year of Mr. Melcher’s spankie-handie urging of our class to bigger and better things. We were most grateful, as we were this year when Dobbie reminded us and later when Doe Bob reminded us, but we still wish their classes could be as unsuccessful as ours has been. We had Fairy rings in English class, but the boys didn’t seem to mind. Ellen (“She never does anything but just lounge around”—Millie) left for midterm a day early at 4:00 a.m. by catching a passing safari and a cab. And it was Boddy or Nobody for Cheerleader. Other occurrences could be mentioned, but they would only be eclipsed by what happened in 1961. The only newcomers our age in 1961 were Bobby and “Kid,” but they dipped under the faculty curtain soon afterwards. So this was our third Senior year. Naturally we were rather bored with all our honors of the preceding year, and the ones which would obviously come, so we tried to act nonchalant (yawn). Never the less the honors came more profusely than ever. We monopolized the Cunningham Award for the second straight year, the Headmaster’s trophy for the third, and ended up with eight all-conference athletes. Several scholarships were also received. The most amazing thing that happened this year was that Georgie came to gradu- ation. The underground six painted bells, moved cars, and sprayed Wooly with water from the Freeman hose. The phylum Amazonia multiplied rapidly, as did the subphylum Smackawalla. We took free weekends. Boy, did we take Free week- ends! The dorms were riotous, too. Louis Legree had a platonic relationship with Hopalong Hardwicke. In the same mood, Alice found out that a hand in the hand is worth three in the bushes. Also, Walker and Tosh had a pair of snow shoes that were in constant use. And there was a riot. Ah, yes, there was a riot, the best ever if there are superlative riots. And the lights went out in the dorm one night. Phillip may be quiet, but he’s laughing now. Several awards were unanimously given. 96 Suzy Henna and Mark got the Brown Memorial Awards for History and French, while Mary Jean became Miss Superior Dairies of 1961. And John Jordan won the Best Exterminator Award. And there were the Senior girls’ booth, Huddy’s hit at the Round-Up Party, Johnny Walker’s liberty bell, Wick and Bunny’s boos, the scarf boudoir, the Amazon Patio with its “tableau of irresponsible gaiety,” the CCC, Aggie Day, Avalanche, chapel chair removals, Lenda Lease, the breakfast clubs (smile, Bunny), the number one’s chipmunks, ET CETERA. There’s one thing our classy class hasn’t done—build a Palm Springs. When another class does that, then we’ll admit inferiority, but as for now, we’ll take our cake and munch on it for a long, long time. The Senior class of 1961 would like to graciously thank the school for the aware- ness of Christianity with which it has presented us. We are obliged for the out- standing education we have been able to receive and give our thanks to all the persevering Faculty who made it possible.
