STEPHEN'S 7 The Spartans have begun to roll, came the cry from the players, the stands, the hills, and the sky as the first half ended with the Spartans leading 7 to 6. Bruce Street, senior halfback, made a seventy-yard touchdown run in the first minutes of the game. The Spartan defense was outstanding. The result of a hard-fought third quarter was no more points for either team and a few harsh words by a few St. Stephen's and Kinkaid players. In the fourth quarter, the Spartans caught a disease that was to plague them for the rest of the season-the common name for that disease is the fourth quarter fold. Kinkaid, amidst the confusion and rapid substitutions, scored three touchdowns thus pushing the Spartans down into the conference cellar. ST JOHN S 70 ST STEPHENS 12 Because the whole school saw this game it was decided that one of our feminine spectators should sum it up Her summary runs I saw Chris Hines Fred Gosling and Kelly Wllkcr running down the ticld This has to be considered the Spartans best fame because of their spirit and de termination throughout most of it In all truthfulness we must say that we cant re member how or when St ohn s scored their touchdowns neither can many others be cause that was of secondary interest alongside the Spartans fighting spirit .nm- ST MARK S 20 ST STEPHEN S 13 In the last few seconds of the game as the pro St Stephen s spectators were breaking out the champagne a St Marks back ran twenty yards for 1 touchdown and ended St Stephen s hopes of winning a well played game The Spartans were supposed to do wery poorly against St Mark s the number two team in the conference but they almost turned in what would hase been the upset of the year ALLEN 20 ST STEPHEN S 6 In the last three games of the season the St Marks Allen and TMI games St Stephen s was winning at the end of the first half but let go of their xictories in the last retaliated in the second with three touchdowns The outstanding fact of this game was the number of Allen and St Stephens players who were hurt Each team lost three players in the course of the game 69 I Y , ' ' .I I ' I , 71 . . XWell here we go again T M I 18 ST STEPHENS 15 The last game of the season was a heart breaker The Spartans outplayed the T M I Panthers throughout the game but lost when T M I completed a last minute touch down pass The Spartans led thirteen to six as the first half ended and they felt sure that uctory was theirs But alas T M I scored twice in the last half Amid the weep ing and wailing and gnashing of teeth the Spartans 1957 1958 football season ended ending we hope the longest losing streak in their history The following is the opinion of one of the football players when asked about the season Well I wont take coxer behind the old saying We didnt haxe a winning year as far as the scores went but we built character because I hanent noticed any great changes in my or any of the other players characters Lets face it We had too many inexperienced players on the team CSeseral of this years lettermen had nexer played football beforej We had trouble getting any amount of teamwork among the players until the last games of the season Sure we were hurt by the flu maybe more than most teams but exerybody had some players sick CThe Spartans had to cancel their first three games because all but three players were sick. Next to our inexperience our biggest handicap was just not enough players. ust about everyone had to play the whole. Most high schools do just about that. CThere were only eighteen players on the team.j And yet in spite of our record I still cant complain about this football season too much because I and all the other players had a lot of fun playing. We played each game like it was the only one we were going to play. The result was that we had a lot of spirit and were hardly ex er down and out like most losing teams are.
