Today. my days of preptirzition :ire over . , mv time for studying has run out . , . today I must depart from the familiar halls ol' my beloved Alma Mater. the sheltering .irms of mv second home. As I slowly and thoughtfully iiiartlied down the aisle ol St. Stephen Church, gnrbed in the traditioiml white sap and gown, and carrying a bouquet ot scarlet rose-buds. l recalled mo-at clearly the words of wisdom that mv dear Nlonsignor :ind the good, patient Sisters have often whispered in my ear. I .isked my Divine Savior to bless me and to walk hand-in-hand with me forever down the aisles of uncertainty and the .avenues of hardships that eventually will lend nie to eternity. As I left my place to receive my diploma from IVIonsignor Cverz, I remembered the hours of study and the days of preparation for the time when I should be presented this white passport that would introduce me into my new life of surprises. excitement, and independence. Finally, as I reluctantly retraced my steps down the middle aisle, I thought of everyone who helped me to reach this day . . . my parents whose unseltish denial of pleasures enabled me to tinish my education in a Catholic school . . . and dear Monsignor who was always thinking of ways to make the school more pleasant and modern for me . . , my teachers who sacrificed their personal glory and desires to give me the splendid Cliristmn training that will shield me from worldly indifference Time and tide have not waited for ine . . . so with tears of grati- tude dimming my eyes and a sense of loneliness piercing my heart. I recalled that November day when I was oth- cially ushered into St. Stephens as a full-fledged freshie. Then as a sophomore, my book of memoirs informed me that I was hedecked in a black and gold Top Hat. As I began my third year, I wore an aqua and white Bell-Hop chapeau to distinguish my class as the newly-advanced junior class. Somehow this one day of the year was aiiticipaled and planned for in very much the same way that a small child awaits his birthday in the hope that he will receive a larger piece ot take and an extra dish of ice cream, I can remember, as freshmen. how proud we it-lt when we saw the dreams of sponsoring a successful skating party materialize into a gala affair. Then, as sophomores, we became unusually mission! minded and sped into lirst place in the mission drive with a total of 376 per cent by means ol a show, auctionsy .ind our homemade penny-Hlling concoctions, As juniors, our long awaited real test came. With joyful expectancy we originated and exetuted elaborate plans for our Firs: mixer held on George VVashingronls birthday. VVe even adopted clierryfshaped name cards and red. white and blue hatchets for souvenirs. My days were not all carpeted with roses. however. Many times I was pricked by the thorns ol maybe a low report card, homework blues, or other disappointments, but somehow they all seem so trivial as I look back upon them. Some of the largest thorns seem like little slivers to me now. I hope that all the upfand-coming Steplienites will enioy all the privileges and little joys that meant so much to all of us. lVIay they, too, be as proud of their Alma Nlater as we are, and may their book of memoirs be as hlled with good times as ours are. Many people have wondered what that spark is that makes us Stephenites so eager to reach school in the morning, and so reluctant to leave it at night . . . what'that iipushn is that enables us to do those little things that many people consider wasted moments. That spark that compels me to jump out of my soft, warm bed in the morning is eagerness and curiousity to find out what pleasant surprises await me at school. Perhaps l shall discover an assembly scheduled or a movie charted for the afternoon. That push is simply a genuine love for my Alma Mater and my earnest desire to support it in every way. When the Catholic Uni- verse Bulletin Drive or the Ad and Patron campaign for the class play began, l readily accepted the challenge and used a bit of that push to spur my homeroom into first place. Then too, my classes were so varied that l became interested in them without difhculty. The Sisters had at their fingertips little devices that made classwork and studying so worthwhile for me. What is more valuable to a journalism student than actually to see a Cleveland paper being composed? The sophomore English classes have improved their letter-writing skill by corresponding with German girls who were mastering the fundamentals of English, Geometry students often exhibited their artistic inclinations by draw- ing designs with geometric symbols as their bases. Girls all like fashions and more than that, they like to parade their very own creations. Home Economics has enabled us to do just that. These are just a few good reasons why l love school and why l miss it after graduation. Do you understand a little more clearly why we Stephenites have that certain light spring in our step and that happy twinkle in our eyes? Beside laying the cornerstone of their business education, jun- iors were busy with many other subjects. For example, if you had been in the library during one of their lunch periods you would more than likely have seen at least one junior solemnly stand- ing in a corner orating, with one eye on the clock, preparatory to that all-important speech class. They continued on their Quest For Happiness studying the Holy Ghost and the Church under the direction of Father Karper. Spun in ills gaifg You are what you read -a forceful statement but every word rings true. Each bit of literature that you read becomes a part of you, uncon- sciously, perhaps. but unfailingly. Because we realize what this means, we have a Catholic Litera- ture Group, whose purpose it is to review books, and to bring before the student body only the best reading material. Another up and coming organi- zation is our C.S.C.-Christophers Serving Christ. Although in opera- tion only a short time, they have over half the student body enlisted among their ranks. Their members receive Holy Communion at least twice weekly and pray forthe Hsupression of Communism and the spread of Catholicism. if Therese Ann Gallallher. President of C.S.C. Carol Vcrheiliyz, D. Sweeney 4 N . W U ,fn 5lffy ociczf Uafefzcfafz QAQSQQZZ2., All work and no play makes lack a dull boy . , . all work and no play makes Sue a wallflowerf' This familiar proverb modified to fit us Stephenites has-had a par- ticular place in my book of memories. Not because it has dehned my social life, but because it holds in itself the watchword by which we lived as students of St. Stephen. When it was time for us to study we put our minds and souls into it , . . when it came time to have fun and broaden our social life by perhaps sponsoring a dance, or attending a football game, or enjoying ourselves at a class play, we put our hearts into it. As l paged through that section of my scrapbook dedicated to our dances and other activities, l lingered over the pictures and souvenirs of my last prom --- my senior prom. A blue and gold program recalled the carefully selected tunes that were included in Vince Pattis selec- tions. Memories of Father Karpers inspiring dedication concluded by the vibrant strains of Mother Beloved will forever be our loving tribute to Mary, the Mother of Grace. The pressed remains of a once dewy-fragrant corsage brought back the light-hearted manner and thoughtiulness of my escort, a Knight for an evening dressed in his shining tux, The wonderful breakfast that we attended after the last joyous notes of Good Night, Ladies had quietly slipped into the folds of the magic spell which enveloped that special night of nights -- my senior prom, will be remembered as a perfect closing of a perfect night blessed by Our Lady's patronage. Reflections of cherry-shaped name cards, huge lace valentines and rustic fences reminded me of the Cathedral Latin and Benedictine mixers that we Stephenites sponsored in our auditorium. l recalled the thrill l experienced as I walked into the hall which l helped transform into a fairy-tale ballroom and greeted the friendly 'iprince Charmingsf' Because of the understanding and helpfulness of the Sisters, our true friends and advisors, we Stephenites shall never want for friends nor be at a loss with people, We shall never be that Sue who is all work and no play. We have learned when to work and when to play. Footballs and fall leaves, hearts and lace bring back memories of our Latin Mixers. For the past few years now we have been helping the missions by hav- ing a swell time at our Cherry Hops and Fall Frolics with Cathedral Latin. We attribute the success of these dances to the fine spirit of cooperation that exists between the Latin fellows and the Stephen girls, and to the assis- tance we receive from our faculty ad- visers. For weeks preceding the memorable opening night, a careful ob- server would notice strange doings after classes. Are these really our girlsgrunning around dressed as men? Wheres their hair? What are they doing? These are some of the queries you might have heard as play practice got under way. Almost Eighteen is the hil- arious story of an average home with a not-too-average son, who managed to produce a few slightly messed situa- tions. Eddie, our almost eighteen trouble-maker, was as lovable as he was marked for tragedy, and the play brought tears, smiles, and hearty laughs to those who attended its performance. 5 'N x ,.,x, I 1, r 3 iff' V 5 , fl 8.8 -13 Y r 4' ,ls i 5' SLQL PE Q tsp M' l iz K!-9' - lm 'ii fs.
