My dear Graduates, As the time fast approaches when you are to leave Saint Stanislaus for the last time as students, thoughts fill my mind as to what I should say to you! Should I extend to you my congratulations on your completion of your high school educa¬ tion—for many of you the last of your formal education, or should I express my anxieties to you at the beginning of your life as young men starting your careers, necessarily as leaders—as men of Catholic Action? Truly I must say both! You are to be complimented on having successfully completed your secondary education. For many it has been a struggle—others, the results came from easier ef¬ forts. In all cases, you have earned the laurels of success—truly you deserve the plaudits of praise showered on you at graduation. But mingled with my compliments are my anxieties as you face the future. Will you model your lives on the principles inculcated in you by your teachers, and be men of character of whom your parents, your teachers and your friends can be proud, or will you be but names in the unknown past to the succeeding classes at Saint Stanislaus ? It rests with you. Yet, together with my anxieties is a great confidence in you, gathered from the fine example, you as a class, have given during your stay at Saint Stanislaus. You have exhibited superb leadership and an intense spirit of cooperation. Continue these traits throughout your lives and all my anxieties will be groundless. Now what last parting words can I say to you? None better do I know than to tell you to intensify your devotion to the Sacred Heart and to His Blessed Mother. Remember His promises to those who have a deep devotion to Him, particularly His promise to be their secure refuge in life and at the moment of death. Keep yourself close to the Sacred Heart and know that He will ever be close to you. May the dear Lord bless you and keep you. Cordially yours, in the Sacred Heart,
