flfe ■ POPE PIUS XII Bishop of Rome and Vicar of Jesus Christ Successor of St. Peter, Prince of the Apostles Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province Sovereign of Vatican City Now Gloriously Reigning. MOST REVEREND RICHARD OLIVER GEROW, M.A., S.T.D. Bishop of Natchez Dear Brothers: This is just a little note to express to you the high regard in which I hold St. Stanislaus. You have shown throughout the years an ability to develop the fine, manly; Christian qualities of boys and young men. If I were a parent I would consider St. Stanislaus an excellent place for my boy. May God bless you in your good work. Sincerely yours in Christ, CQ. o. MOST REVEREND R. O. GEROW Bishop of Natchez Rev. Father Donnelly, S.J., Presi¬ dent of Loyola University, a princi¬ pal speaker at the banquet. His Excellency and the Fourth De¬ gree Knights of Columbus. Participation in the Dairy Bowl at Perkinston Junior College, Perkinston, Mississippi, climaxed the gridiron season for the St. Stanislaus Rock-A-Chaws. There, hosted as one of the leading teams of the Gulf Coast, the Rocks met and defeated Forrest County Agricultural School, of Brooklyn, Mississippi, 26 to 13. The team is shown proudly displaying the souvenirs of their victory. Maurice Artiques receives the American Legion Award and congratulations from Fr. Cooper, S.J. Dancing to the music of the Jay Zainey Orchestra. The Frey family with the help of Father Cos¬ tello of Waveland enthrones the Sacred Heart in their home. A wonderful manifestation of a deep Catholic devotion. Father Leonard officiates at the enthronement services in the Gottschalk home, Bay St. Louis. Their son, Karl, standing in front of Father, entered the seminary last summer. O ES7 The Sacred Heart reigns as King in the Com- pretta family of Bay St. Louis. Father Robin¬ son solemnly enthrones Him in a simple but beautiful ceremony. Nineteen hundred and fifty-six . . . this was the year we graduated. As you can see from the pictures, it was a year filled with numerous activities, both spiritual and material. But look closer! With the eye of your imagination take a glimpse beyond the mere visible, into the hearts, the joys, the anxieties of each one of us. Intermingled with the nervous energy of youth were joys and sorrows, laugh¬ ter and tears, successes and failures. Looking back, the sorrows, tears and failures appear as laughable incidents, even as successes, because of the happy memories of friends long known and deeply loved. Within these pages are reminders of the good old days filled with ex¬ periences, perhaps at times bitter-sweet, but dear to all of us because, although many, we were struggling for a common goal, a desired end. Through it all we were aided, encouraged and, yes, even moderated, by men devoted to our advancement intellectually and physically but above all spiritually. This advancement, although hardly noticeable, was achieved. But only at great cost. The hard work was anticipated with sad hearts; tears were shed over the many failures. It is because of these tears, these failures, that we look back upon the year with laughter in our eyes, with joy in our hearts, for they were not the catastrophes we then imagined them. These have become in reality the good old days for we have emerged victorious among our many defeats. We have been fast approaching manhood. Our present prayer is that in future years we may again look back and say that we have added to the foundation a structure of which we may be truly proud. PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Dear Friends, What a flood of thoughts rush in upon us as the school year draws to a close! Some are happy thoughts, some bring a twinge of sorrow. Most, however, are thoughts of joy and gratitude. Our reflections turn first to our students . . . our boys,” especially to our seniors. St. Stanislaus was founded to inculcate into American youth the ideals and aspirations of Christian living. Are not, then, our pupils the embodiment of our ideals, the culmination of our hopes ? We pray that it may be so. We share the happiness of the seniors as their graduation nears, but their departure will be accompanied by sad farewells. To the parents of our students, we are deeply grateful for their confidence in intrusting their sons to our care. We appreciate this compliment and assure them that we dedicate our lives for their care. Into their homes, into business, into all their living, our alumni have brought the high ideals with which they were imbued at St. Stanislaus. They are leaders in a world where leadership is so direly needed. We are proud of them. How express our gratitude to the faculty—the Brothers, lay teachers, our doctor, our nurse, who have given themselves without counting the cost! May God abundantly reward them! To the priests of Our Lady of the Gulf parish, to the Fathers of the Society of the Divine Word, we are indebted for innumerable favors and courtesies. For our many benefactors, who share in our work and our prayers, we daily pray that God may bless them. Sincerely yours in the Sacred Heart, BROTHER ROLAND, S.C. Ph. QUIGLEY, M.D. School Physician My dear Graduates, As the time fast approaches when you are to leave Saint Stanislaus for the last time as students, thoughts fill my mind as to what I should say to you! Should I extend to you my congratulations on your completion of your high school educa¬ tion—for many of you the last of your formal education, or should I express my anxieties to you at the beginning of your life as young men starting your careers, necessarily as leaders—as men of Catholic Action? Truly I must say both! You are to be complimented on having successfully completed your secondary education. For many it has been a struggle—others, the results came from easier ef¬ forts. In all cases, you have earned the laurels of success—truly you deserve the plaudits of praise showered on you at graduation. But mingled with my compliments are my anxieties as you face the future. Will you model your lives on the principles inculcated in you by your teachers, and be men of character of whom your parents, your teachers and your friends can be proud, or will you be but names in the unknown past to the succeeding classes at Saint Stanislaus ? It rests with you. Yet, together with my anxieties is a great confidence in you, gathered from the fine example, you as a class, have given during your stay at Saint Stanislaus. You have exhibited superb leadership and an intense spirit of cooperation. Continue these traits throughout your lives and all my anxieties will be groundless. Now what last parting words can I say to you? None better do I know than to tell you to intensify your devotion to the Sacred Heart and to His Blessed Mother. Remember His promises to those who have a deep devotion to Him, particularly His promise to be their secure refuge in life and at the moment of death. Keep yourself close to the Sacred Heart and know that He will ever be close to you. May the dear Lord bless you and keep you. It is a public act of reparation. The family is encouraged and urged to LIVE THE ENTHRONEMENT. They do this by reciting daily in family, if possible, the short prayer on the last page of the cere¬ monial booklet, by assisting at Holy Mass and receiving Holy Communion, in reparation to the Sacred Heart, on the First Friday of each month, and by frequenting the sacraments as often as possible. In other words, it means the living and practicing of one’s religion as a family group. Father Ervin Bauer, S.V.D. officiates at the Enthronement ceremony in the home of .Mrs. Anaise Deignan, the school’s resident nurse. Father Francis Larkin, SS. Rev. Msgr. Michael J. McCarthy, the Knights of Co¬ lumbus and the Altar Boys stand at attention as the Blessed Sacrament comes into view for the commencement of the annual Corpus Christi procession. The Knights of Columbus form a guard of honor as they escort the Blessed Sacrament, in solemn procession, through the streets of the city. The student body comes into view as the proces¬ sion makes its way to¬ wards the outdoor altar erected on the grounds of the St. Stanislaus Day School. The Stanislaus Band and the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary from St. Joseph’s Academy present a beautiful example of Catholic vouth in action. The ceremonies come to a close as Father Robinson raises the Blessed Sacrament in benediction. The Stanislaus students walk to the cemetery in procession to participate in these All Souls Day services. Preceding the ceremony, the Brothers and students recite the rosary for the repose of the souls of the dearly departed. Msgr. McCarthy, assisted by James Grace blesses the individual graves. Father Leonard, aided by Brother Hubert, S.C., concludes the blessings. The ceremonial for the blessing of the new cemetery com¬ mences as Rt. Rev. Msgr. Michael J. McCarthy, assisted by Father John Leonard (left) and Father John Robinson (right) intones the opening prayer. After vesting, Father Maurice Meyers, S.J., celebrant of the Mass in the Byzantine Rite, goes to the side altar and pre¬ pares the bread and wine that are later to be carried to the main altar in solemn pro¬ cession. Escorted by four assistants. Father Meyers carries the pre¬ pared bread and chalice in a Solemn procession called the Great Entrance” from the side altar to the main altar. Standing before the altar, the celebrant sings the day’s Tro- par a and Kontakia (similar to our Gradual chants). A characteristic ritual of the Eastern Rite is evidenced as Father Meyers incenses the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the Oriental church¬ es, this is on a great picture- screen that separates the sanc¬ tuary from the body of the church. Holding the veiled chalice and paten L before him, the celebrant solemnly ex- horts the faithful to be mindful of the Sacred Mysteries unfolding before them. Observing the Byzantine ritual, the communicant receives Holy Communion standing with his arms folded on his breast. He receives Our Lord under both species. IRcte t As the celebrant chants the Credo he holds an elaborately decorated cloth, which resembles our chalice veil, over the bread and wine that have been brought to the altar of sacrifice. All Oriental rites make extensive use of incense. The most Blessed Sacrament is incensed in adoration; the altar and icons are incensed in veneration; the priests, ministers and people are in¬ censed as a sanctification. The services continue with the celebrant chanting the sacred prayers in the ver¬ nacular. Holding the paten and chalice in his hands, the priest raises them from the altar towards heaven and sings the famous warning to the communi¬ cants: Holy things for the holy!” As the Sacred Rites come to a close the people are blessed. An elaborate formula of dismissal is then sung, and, the Mass is over. As the celebrant prepares to distribute the Sacred Species, he turns to the peo¬ ple with the chalice, and holding it before him, sings the dramatic words: With the fear of God and with faith, come ye nigh! Band Director One hundred years of music is the proud boast of this department at St. Stanislaus. Since the foundation of the school, music has played an important part in the curriculum. From Beethoven to Sousa, from the lilting swing of the strings to the brassy blast of trumpets, the band continued to progress in one hundred years of music learning and appreciation. It was in 1918 that the first brass band was organized at St. Stanislaus. Since this was the first attempt at such an organization, the band was rather small, number¬ ing only twenty-eight members. While the new band was in its infancy, the string orchestra was enjoying the popularity of full maturity. Brother Oliver, since retired from the field of music, was responsible for one of the finest string orchestras of the day. The year 1932 saw Brother Romuald organize the concert and marching bands. This was an entirely new development, and as such had to withstand the usual opposition of the new and untried. After many wearying months, the band gave its first concert in May 1933. These youngsters played masterfully, for they had due inspiration. The Band Mothers’ Club had just purchased new uniforms for them. Making its initial appearance in 1937 at the Mississippi High School State Band Contest held in Jackson, the band won first-place honors in concert and marching. This accomplishment set the pace for all the bands which have followed. From then until the very present, no band has enjoyed more success in these annual con¬ tests than has St. Stanislaus. Collective and individual success is attested by the fact that the band has amassed a total of sixteen plaques for first-place ratings and hun¬ dreds of medals by individual members. The band library has approximately seven hundred selections of various types. Each selection is catalogued by the triple card filing system. The cost of this music amounts to approximately one thousand two hundred dollars. Supplementing the band, the St. Stanislaus Music Department maintains a dance orchestra which is regarded as the finest high school orchestra on the coast. The Rocksters” have numerous engagements during the scholastic year. Many of the grad¬ uates have immediately joined with professional musicians and are playing with the better orchestras in the South. The distinguished superior has vis¬ ited some of the Brothers’ schools in the South before, but only brief¬ ly. This time he will visit every house and stay some time in each. “I am happy to visit here at Stanislaus, the oldest boarding school operated by the Brothers in America,” said the Reverend Bro¬ ther. “I noticed particularly the fine spirit of union and cooperation between the students and their pre¬ fects, teachers and coaches.” The superior also expressed the Byzantine Rite Mass Celebrated Here At 6:30 This Morning This morning at 6:30 A.M. the students and faculty of St. Stanis¬ laus were offered a rare privilege when the Rev. Maurice F. Meyers, S. J. celebrated Mass in the Byzantine Rite in the school chapel. Since the vestments which the priest wore and the way in which he performed the sacrifice of the Mass were quite different from the Roman Rite, booklets containing the English translation of the Mass liturgy were provided for those who attended. The Mass in this rite is ' always sung, though at some times more solemnly than others. It is not r£ad as in the Roman Rite. The Byzantine vestments were characteristic of the dress associat¬ ed with the Near East cultures of the Old World.
