IUNGLE SCENE ISTORY and lrterature have often told tales of the undaunted courage ot unsung heroes There are many of them They never know they have per formed deeds of srgnrfrcance they only do what they believe to be therr duty To this roll of honor may l add the name of Dennrs O Malley9 He was one of those completely passrve rndrvrduals who never drd any thrng notorrously bad nor an ,Ithrng worthy of merrt or drstrnctron He had rn hrm a sense of relrgron a love of home and more than average ardor for flag and country To these last two was added the word General and behrnd that Word lay all the loyalty patrrotrsm and devotron Dennrs O Malley could render to any one berng or obrect He was one of those rndrvrduals who knew the bitterness suffering and glory of Bataan ln hrrn lay the burn rng desrre to do something to rustrfy hrs being there and to wrn not fame but a word of commendatron from the General Dennrs wasnt made of the stuff heroes were made of He wasnt all bravery courage and youthful zeal He had fears and vrces that overruled hrm but there came a time when he proved hrs Worth Day broke peacefully on a rurrgle forest scene of calmness where the only drsturbrng noises were the Jungle vorces of the animal rnhabrtants lf Dennrs and hrs companion had not been so rntent on scoutrng they doubtless would have enroyed the beauty of the place As rt was all was lost on them Sud denly the two stopped listened and hid themselves as best they could rn the bushes one on one srde the other opposrte Sounds of gutteral Orrental vorces could be heard All was silent save for these noises and the occa sional scream of some tropical brrd Through the trees came the enemy volversl They didnt believe that enemy scouts would dare come so close to their lines The lapanese were almost on them There was nothrng to do but to frght as well as possible The swrft report of Dennrs revolver broke the semi srlence and without even a cry of pain the frrst of the l1ne fell to the ground Instantly the men were on the alert bayonets drawn guns ready Another shot from Dennrs companron on the other srde and another lap fell lt was lucky they made therr shots good The two Americans as yet had not been seen by therr opponents so the lapanese were unable to ascertarn the number of men Their bewrlderment grew when Dennrs and hrs friend fired such a volley of shots that rt could be taken for the bullets of ten guns rather than two Belrevrng the r selves to be outnumbered and already some of therr comrades havrng been krllea two lapanese fled terror stricken rnto the Jungle while one of the Americans mode a harlstorm as he rarned hrs bullets on the retreating frgures In the meantrme Dennrs had hrs hands full taking care of a man who wrth a fanatical zeal had remained behrnd rn the hopes of dyrrrg a glorrous death for the Lmperor Hrs hopes were short lived for Den nts proved that an Amerrcan right to the Jaw was superior and more effec trve than the lapanese Jrurrtsu The man lost conscrousness and the two not only had defeated therr enemy but had captured a prrsoner of war Den ms experienced the exultatron of triumph when hrs General notrced smiled and although he sard lrttle Dennrs knew hrs ervrce was apprecrated With thrs thought together wrth the happrness of helprng hrs country Dennrs was rewarded The reward was more than ample Ioan lohnson 43 PAGE THIRTY rr n . 1 I A - I t , 1 . , I t k W' I , I . , I Five!
