SAINT ROSE ACADEMY Vincennes, Indiana this album of memories to our ever faithful chaplains, the Very Reverend Monsignor Paul A. Deery and the Reverend Henry J. Doll. May it be our tribute to their tireless efforts and con- stant vigilance in our spiritual and material ad- vancement. The nobleness of their lives and the soundness of their teaching has led us ever closer to Mary, the Rosa Mystica. In gratitude we pray that our lives and deeds may reflect the virtues of the love of God, the loyalty to country, and the service to neighbor which have characterized their priestly lives. 2 % SISTER CLOTILDE History, Civics, Business Arithmetic Principal SISTER MARY PROVIDENTIA Librarian SISTER MAURELIA Piano, Voice, Glee Club, Choir SISTER MARY ELVIRE Religion, English, Commerce Senior Class Sponsor SISTER ANN CAMILLUS Religion, Geometry, Algebra, Bookkeeping Junior Class Sponsor SISTER DOLOROSA Religion, Latin Sophomore Class Sponsor SISTER ANN MONICA Religion, English, Speech, Biology Freshman Class Sponsor 4 MRS. SPEECH nationai HONOR SOCIETY, The St. Rose Chapter of the National Honor Society was established this year in our school. This society has for its purpose the promotion of high ideals and standards of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The ceremony of induction, which took place on Febraury 6 at a school assembly, was conducted by the Washington Central Catholic Chapter under the chairmanship of Miss Shirley Risch, assisted by Miss Carol Reinsel and Miss Charlotte Weldridge. Mem- bership cards and pins were presented by Sister Clotilde to the following girls who had been selected on the basis of their high school record, and by election of the faculty and stu- dents: SENIORS: Marianne Bouvy, Catherine Gallagher, Miriam Lenzini, Dorothy Ueding JUNIORS: Patricia Murphy, Deborah O ’Connor Congratulations to these charter members of the St. Rose Chapter! Foundation Day, a tradition in all schools conducted by the Sisters of Providence, was celebrated with the presentation by the Seniors of a short play entitled A Modern Anne Therese. Given in honor of our Sisters at St. Rose, the play recalled the courageous work of the Founding Sisters, who were fearlessly led by Mother Theodore through the unknown perils of the wilder- ness. Because of the dauntless forti- tude of these early missionaries, it is possible for the Catholic youth of today to learn to know, love, and serve God so that some day they may be happy with Him in Heaven. The spiritual and material activities at St. Rose provide an outlet for con- stant individual apostolic work and some participation in group activities. On December 6 the new Sodalists made profession of special devotion to the Mother of God and were dedicated to her by a complete consecration. Participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and reception of Holy Communion were the initial acts of the Seniors in their celebration of St. Catherine’s Day, During the day, groups of happy Seniors could be seen enjoying their day of freedom from school activities. Trips to Washington and other neighboring towns had been planned well in advance. In the evening, the Seniors were the guests of the Juniors at a delicious and carefully arranged banquet at the American Legion Hall. Following the banquet, a program was presented consisting of a one-act play, “Gray Bread,” a specially arranged tribute to St. Catherine by a group of voice students, and a greeting chorus by the Junior Class. 32 v STANDING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Jane Frey, Mary Ann Kemp, Phyllis Larson, Camilla Lewis, Carolyn Leech, Theresa Primus, Gwendolyn McGaughey, Barbara Houghton, Mary Helen Zeigler, Margaret Wathen. CLASS HISTORY In September, 1948, the class of 1952 met on the steps of old St. Rose to begin its climb to Graduation Summit. Itwas then that we met the friends whom we would grow to love during the coming four years. At this early stage in our student life, we were constantly terrorized by the thought that the Seniors were planning a Welcome Party for us. When the party was over, we all agreed that we had a barrel of fun and our dignity had not been too seriously damaged. Under the direction of Sister Thomas Aquinas, we appeared on the stage for the firsttime at the November mission meet- ing. Very soon our talent was requested a second time. Itwas our privilege to present a Christmas play for the student body. Time sped on. The end of the first semester brought our first high school retreat. Father Raymond and his practical advice will always be remembered. In February, we and the Sophomores portrayed famous characters in the Book Week program. In May we closed the cover of our memory book and began to look forward to the day when we would return as Sophomores. As Sophomores we accepted the responsibilities of real students with Sister Annunciata as our advisor. Our Literary Circle contributed thirty-one books to the library. During Book Week we made huge drawings and portrayed the characters which they represented. Maytime came and we entertained the Seniors at the Senophs Party. Again a happy year at S.R.A. had come to a close. At last we were upper classmen. With Sister Ann Camillus as our advisor, we planned our first big activity--the Sport Dance. Gibault Gym was filled with Indians and brightly colored leaves with “Indian Summer” as the theme. St. Catherine’s Day was commemorated with all traditional reverence and beauty. After the new year began we undertook a magazine drive. The profits were bountiful enough to pro- duce “Blossom Time,” our Prom. Rows and rows of multicolored blossoms formed the false ceiling at the Fortnightly Club. Our Lady stood in a huge rose blossom as Patroness of our dance. In cherished memories we hold the orchestra and orchids, the smiles and the sighs, and all the memories of that night of nights. The dignified Senior s came to school and found no desks in the Senior homeroom. After we had made use of odds and ends for the first three weeks, our beautiful new desks arrived. Under the direction of Sister Mary Elvire, we began our Senior ac- tivities. Itwas our privilege to introduce the Freshmen to high school life with a Wel- come Party. OnFoundation Daywe entertained the Sisters with a three-act play and a verse speaking version of “The Prayer to Divine Providence.” Tiny log cabins with miniature Sisters decorated the Sisters ’ dinner table. St. Catherine's Day came and we knelt before the altar of God to pray that we might follow the example of this glorious saint. During our three-day retreat, Father McCarten quietly but emphatically directed our steps toward our eternal commencement. On February 22 the American Legion Hall was the scene of our Sport Dance. This was the first of a series of activities which emphasized the approaching end of our high school days. The Sophomores en- tertained us at the traditional Senior-Sophomore Party. We were made members of the Alumnae and enjoyed its dinner dance. And then, who’ll ever forgetProm night? On that last day of school we hung our class picture in the hall where we took our places among the hundreds who have left St. Rose after four happy years. In the aft- ernoon of May 25 we assembled for the last time and the thirty-three of us marched down the aisle of the Old Cathedral. Graduation Summithad been reached. Therewere tears in our eyes as we recalled the work, the fun, the sadness and delights of happy times and wonderful teachers and schoolmates at dear old St. Rose. 38 I) lilt PATRONS Mr. and Mrs. Benham Anderson R.
