The graduates feel that there is a parallel between the great ex- pansion program at their Alma Mater and the renaissance of their native city. Both have grown spiritually, educationally and cul- turally, civicly, socially, and athletically during their histories. The first products of the new St. Rosalia High School know that they have been taken to the Gateway to the Future by wise ad- ministrators and faithful, energetic, well-trained teachers. And just as Pittsburgh fills its place as the Gateway to the future so too must they live up to all that has prepared them to take their places in this great industrial center. The editors invite you, interested readers, to follow them as they develop their theme in word and picture. .M Ad 1, W' 1 QW ' ' f' wif C ' a. : , d: ,,3' - o o 0 Q ei ' 'lg' Q ,,' Q' ...f , my N. 4. Sister is known as willing to give a hand to anyone in need and her assistance is constantly in demand. Traces of the art work of Sister Laurena and her art students are everywhere to be found in the school. Spiritual guidance, the first step, gave them the realization that only under the direction of Catholic education could they develop their whole personality and become citizens with a goal. Educational and cultural guidance, the second step, unfolded before them the courses for the various careers which they might choose to become citizens with a purpose in life. Civic guidance, the third step, gave them a wealth of informa- tion about their government and its workings so they might become citizens with the traits of leadership. Social guidance, the fourth step, provided the many oppor- tunities for graceful living which will help them to become citizens with poise and aplomb. Athletic guidance, the fifth step, trained them in the principles of healthy living so that they might become citizens with a strong body for healthy minds. Yes, Saint Rosalia's seniors stand well fitted for life and well armed to pass successfully through the Gateway to the Future. , E .IU W y 1 Propagation of the Faith 1, 2, 3, 4 . . . M. McKeown, A. Lesante, G. Britt, E. Palaoro, and C. Sturm came out highest 1n the freshman homeroom. There is competition among the our classes. These girls were given prizes for their work. RELIGIOU LIFE Pittsburgh is not only the '4Gateway to the Future physically and materially but also it is the 'cGateway to the Future spiritually. lts churches prepare the faithful of Pittsburgh and surrounding areas for a future far more important. They prepare the souls for the future gateway which leads to their Creator. Saint Rosalia, too, can be called a spiritual Gateway to the Futuref' Saint Rosalials Re- ligion courses are designed around one central theme: Man was created to give glory to God. These classes show us that our uQuest for Happiness, if it is developed, leads to God. She instructs us so that we can face the future with a knowledge and understanding of our Faith and ideals. This knowledge and under- standing will help us to live so that when it is time for us to go through the gateway into eternal life we will be able to go through it with confidence. The first hand-carved crucifix to be put up in the new school was erected in the senior classroom by Class President L. Bernabo. She asks V. Tanney if it is straight. The other officers, P. Cesky fleftj and M. A. Sagone, look on in reverent awe. Members of the senior class read attentively the news they find in the Pittsburgh Catholic. The girls consider this an im- portant factor of their religious education and also a very helpful aid in strengthening their Catholic faith. Since the essence of a truly Chris- tian life is prayer and union with God, the members of the senior class start the day off as true Christians with their daily prayers. At the beginning of each class they again call upon God to watch them and guide them the whole day through. Looking into the future and visualizing the lovely statue of Our Lady that will some day take its place in the niche is sophomore .l. Conley, who made the first contribution from her inventor's prize money. With her are a few members of the freshman class, who were the first class to reach its quota. They are F. Ontla. D. McDonough, M. Bowler and N. Kleppick. Sophomores R. Cesky, J. Lennox, B. Jenkins, I. Cillo watch D. Beall point out Christ's life cycle from His birth to His death on the cross. V. Pribila looks up the facts in the New Testament to make sure that everything is correct and historical. 37 The Fatima Club has a monthly Stamp Day. Officers B. Mullen, and Sister Mary of the Angels, watch President S. Miller as she puts the address on the first hox to leave St. Rosalia. J. Lawrence is very intent on seeing that no mistake is made. P. Lovas f1.2 is also an Overseer. The stamps are sent to a Trappist Monastery and also to a relative of a Rosalian student. Nervously chattering about their outfits while waiting for their big moment in the Junior- Senior Fatima Club Annual Spring Fashion Show are S. Miller, C. Krolicky, C. Caruso, P. Kaufman and D. Kondash. Proceeds of this show went toward the education of a young man studying for the priesthood. With serious faces that depict interest, soph- omores .l. Opyrachal, J. Hauser, M. Palumhi, and B. Stawicki take advantage of the pam- phlet rack in the vestibule of the church. These pocket-size booklets provide information and interest for those who read them. Many answer the everyday problems that arise in our society. The sophomore members of the Fatima Club, which meets every first Friday during the first period, listen intently as Sister Angela, moderator, explains the club's three main objectives. You can see from the interested looks on the face of each girl that she is willing to abide by these rules. The main purpose of the club is to increase respect for and appreciation of religious vocations. On one of those bright April days junior members of the Fatima Club were anxious to attend the Annual Vocation Holy Hour held at St. Paul's Cathedral. Gloria Espo- sito is providing transportation for her fellow classmates, N. Gruber, E. Leckenby, M. Munda, and L. Kranak. INR' F 011 EDUCATIO AL LIFE As the City of Pittsburgh offers opportunities for a well rounded education so too does St. Rosalia High School. The philosophy of Catholic education permeates all our classes. Not only are we given the basic essentials of a high school education but we are instructed in principles of good conduct. In our science classes We analyze the how and why of Chern- icals and living things. lVIathe1natics stimulates our mental faculties. Languages teach us to appreciate our native tongue and to develop our minds in the customs and cultures of various countries. The specific objective of the commercial department is to acquaint the student with the practical as well as theoretical knowledge in the fields of business. Music and art give the student an intelligent understanding of these cultural subjects and give them an opportunity to develop and express their creative tendencies. IVIELLON INSTITUTE i Checking newspaper articles for accuracy are K. Cain and P. Messman. The girls are intent on checking the information. Rc- ceiving assistance from E. Bala-' wejder is D. Beall who finds it humorous. The stern look on the face of the Associate Editor, S. Kelly, fat the head of desks! impresses all to do the work cor- rectly and well. Preparing headlines for the school paper, the Review, are the sophomores M. Jablonski, J. Tor- nese, I. Petrone and B. Savikas. Writing a headline is not easy as seen by the expression of the face of C. Blicha, fseatedl, hut getting the right word can be fun to M. Schwamberger and R. Reno. Senior J. Hyland, who is circula- tion manager of the newspaper, watches intently as the rest of the girls of the circulation staff paste stickers on the Review, which are to be sent to other schools and dioceses. From left to right the girls are B. Stawicki, M. MacDonald, J. Elash, J. Hy- land, Bernadette Scanlon, and B. Dimperio. Straightening up the journalism room of the .new school are a few of the many busy freshies. Tak- ing time out from her job to read a caption of the new edition of the Review is N. Whalen.
