We stop thinking about the good of the family and think too much of ourselves. We build walls around us that shut us in and others out. The 1983 Cascian staff dedicates this book to the FAMILY spirit that makes St. Rita such a good place to work and learn. And we use Robert Frost's poem to re' mind us that those walls we build around us should be torn down. .16 1 at nv., X l Ls..m:J', 'KW ST 'It 1 f f al l af W 'll' lllf ll l vll iw lf i li fl ' '23 bv A ! ll If 5' v I ll 3 xg Something there is that doesn't love a wall .f J' .. Something there is that doesn't love a wall - RIFWA 4 1. 92 3 3 ul found the opportunity of helping people very rewar- ding, and l especially enjoyed working with the studentsg they were very receptive and helpful in making my stay at St. Rita a very enjoyable one, commented Fr. David Brecht, OSA., as he summed up his four year career at St. Rita. St. Rita's religious and lay faculty were also very helpful and l feel that they are some of the finest people l have had the opportunity to work with in my career. Fr. Brecht will be leaving St. Rita HS. to become the Assistant to the Provincial of the midwest province. Fr. Brecht's new duties include overseeing the operations of the Augustinian High Schools of the province and being the Chairman of the Education Commission, Director of Conti- nuing Education for the Augustinians, and the Director of Research and Planning for the province. HFr. Brecht will be greatly missed by the St. Rita Com- munity and we are sorry to see him leave, said Director of Studies, Mr. Joseph Bamberger. This year was probably the best in a long time and we attribute this to the fine ad- ministration and also the cooperation of the students. Over the four years Fr. Brecht was at St. Rita there were many well received changes including new windows for the main building, replacement of the Chapel Building stairway, a new heating system for the Annex Building, and new desks for the school. None of these improvements could have been made if the students did not have the pride in the school that they have, said Fr. Brecht. Their enthusiasm in fund raising was phenomenal as was their interest in growing as Christian men. l know that the students, faculty and religious will con- tinue to perform as well as they have in my stay at St. Rita, and will maintain the pride in St. Rita and the Christian spirit that has brought them so far, concluded Fr. Brecht. Prior ofthe St. Rita Augustinians: Fr. Roland Follmann, O.S.A Board of Administration: Mr, Joseph Bamberger, Fr, David Brecht, O,S.A., and Fr. Roland Follmann, O.S.A. Mr. James Angsten, Fr. Charles Prevender, chair- man of the Theology Department. Our department teachers work very well together and we have a great amount of input at our monthly departmental meetings which helps to establish a strong department. l'Fr. Murphy and I attend the St. Xavier Seminar on Religious Education so we are able to evaluate our department and it appears that we have the best, continued Br. Charles. Because Rita has the best Theology department it has been asked to review religious texts by Mr. Zimmerman. Mr. Zim- merman sends us his books about twice a year for a reviewg we have done this for the past several years and Mr. Zimmerman is grateful for the help we give him, said Br. Charles. 'Excellent teachers, guest speakers, and strong input all contributed to help the department succeed and hopefully things will not change too much next year, said Br. Charles. Br. Chris Howe will be leaving to continue his studies for the priesthood, and Br. Mark Thedens will be joining the Theology Department next year. Next year we are starting a Theology program for the slower freshmen students, said Br. Charles. i'We will also start discussing the possibility of electives in Theology courses and of having sophomores take Theology all year long. We con- tinue to have very high A.P. scores from our senior students, and this year we started to prepare for the ACT exam earlier, said Mr. Misiora. Mr. Dvorak was the main innovator for the earlier preparation of juniors taking the ACT, which helped them become more aware of the test format. Because we have such a strong department St. Rita is able to accomplish more in one year than some other high schools can in ten years, said Mr. Misiora. l am very pleased with the way our teachers work together to help the students get bet- ter scores on the ACT and A.P. exams. There were no major changes. The same programs that worked last year were successful this year. All of the teachers from first year teachers like Mr. Arena to seasoned veterans like Mr. Krystof and Fr. Flach kept the math scholars on their toes, and the department is disappointed to see Mr. Mike Walaczek leave, Mr. Lasky continued. Math scores improved this year because of the work many teachers did after hours. For example, Fr. Flach spent much time after school giving extra help to in- terested students, and Mr. Genge was in charge of the math tutors. 1. Mr. Norbert Lasky teaches geometry and algebra. The career shifts toward more commerce related fields is evident and St. Rita students are taking advantage of the business courses of- fered here. I am very pleased with this, said Mr. Jeffery, because many of our graduates are moving toward careers in the business fields. Accounting classes are at the forefront of increased enrollmentg there were 5 full accounting classes this year along with a very good advanced accounting class, Mr. Jef- fery added, but don't underestimate the other business courses. WEA .aJI.a.a .a.a .a..a.a ...I RETA Gym classes have utilized the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Program to get students in top shape and teach self-discipline to the individual. Classes at St. Rita are geared to keeping the students active and also to building up their strength by Weightlifting, said Department Chairman Mr. James Segredo. We can give the student the exercises, but he has to teach himself to meet his own goals by hard work. Three separate parts make up St. Rita's gym classes: Cal calisthenics and running to shape up students, tbl basketball fundamentals to teach team sports, ici weightlifting to increase body strength. These workouts are really tough, but they get you in shape, said sophomore Mark Arteaga. There were no big changes in 82-83, all we look for is the steady improvement in the classes and in the shape and conditioning of the students, concluded Mr. Segredo. l. Woodshop skills are taught by Mr. James Economakas. Students learn about various carpen- try tools and materials, and acquire experience working with woodworking machinery. The classes teach a valuable trade and also help students to pursue a college education in engineer- ing, Mr. Bamberger concluded. 1. EHFET RETA SILJU ' 5191133 Reorganization of the Guidance Department will take place next year with the institution of a followup system of counsel- ing. The system will allow a counselor to follow a graduating class all throughout the students' high school careers at St. Rita. Another change will be that there will be no overlap between the Guidance Department and the Admissions Office. The concept of the Counselor following up on a class is new at St. Rita, and hopefully it will produce positive results, said Fr. Roland F. Follmann, Chairman of the Guidance Department and Prior of the St, Rita Augustinians. The objective of the depart- ment is to help the student with any problems he might have, and, by starting the follow-through program, we hope to make the counseling more personalized and friendly, continued Fr. Follmann. This past year Mr. Hofer was working in both the Admissions Office and the Guidance Office. Consequently there was an overlap of work between the two officesg Next year, however, he will be a counselor on a more regular basis, continued Fr. Follmann. Some changes that took place this year were the addition of Fr. Ronald Turcich to the guidance office CFL Turcich is also a typing teacherj and the move of Fr. Follmann's office to the main office. Before, most students did not know where my office was, or they never saw it. However, now that my office is in the main of- fice, students know where it is and can easily drop in and see me, said Fr. Follmann. Another change that occurred this past year was the start of a student attrition program designed to help failing students ad' just to high school. This program uses upperclassmen to help the freshmen and sophomores. Started by the Admissions Office, this program will be continued by Mr. Hofer and the Guidance Office. l. Fr. However, without them the school would not function as smoothly as it does. The bookroom, for instance, provides an easy and affordable way for students to buy the text books necessary for their classes, not to mention required reading books for English throughout the year. The cafeteria helps the students maintain a balanced diet at an economical cost. The students would be forced to brown bag it with cold sandwiches every day if the cafeteria didn't existg instead students are able to choose from many warm meals. Ms. Rae Alford, head librarian, helps students collect information for essays students must write, while she provides a quiet atmosphere for study. The library is an important source of information for classes that require indepth study. The team won the Catholic League title icing it by beating St. Laurence and then advanced to the state playoffs finishing among the top 8 teams in the state. Going into the season the team was not ranked in state and was only ranked to finish third in the Catholic League. However, the team sparked by excellend junior starters and outstanding senior leadership, was able to prove the rank- ings wrong and make it to the state playoffs, commented Mr. Segredo. Leading the Mustangs this year were all-area and Catholic League all stars Joe Jenkins, Torn Lynch and Tim Murney. Joining them on the Catholic League All Star team were Brian Coe, Ed Gannon, and Bradley Price. This year's seniors really showed great pride in themselves and the desire to win, said Mr. Segredo. They also helped the juniors become better prepared for their season. As for next year's team the Mustangs should be highly ranked considering the quality of the returning seniors. Also the games against Mr. Carmel and St. Laurence should be indicators as to how well the 1983 team should finish. l, Al Zaleski gets upended in the end zone during the Lane Tech playoff game. 2. PQSUIFS BEST IN HFSTUCRV -I-I-I-r.-J -I -I This year was a standout year for St. Rita Cross Country: the Run- ning Mustangs sent its first individual downstate and had its best IHSA sectional finish. John Herlihy's trip downstate was a big step for the program, said head cross country coach Guy Hofer. He not only advanced downstate but finished well enough to be named all- state. Our 10th place sectional finish, behind Herlihy, Mike Villa, Jeronimo Reyes, Bob Arteaga, Chris Koczwara, Barry Federici and Eric Welch was the best in our school's history. We were only five places away from going downstate as a team. Our success was basically due to three factors: hard work on the part of the whole varsity, belief in the program, and depth, which proved very important after we lost two starters, Terry Childers and Ed Herrerias, by the end of the season, continued Coach Hofer. However, we were hampered by inconsistency because we had no set strategy going into a race. Our runners would race with different strategies throughout the season and had varying results. The sophomore and freshman teams also found success this season. The sophomores placed fourth in the Catholic League with Tom Garvey, Matt Stapleton, Sal Passament, John Barrett, Ed Hurley, Armando Rosas, and Ed Hurley. We were very pleased with our ac- complishments this year and attribute this to having the strongest defense in the state and also strong senior leader- ship, commented Br. Frank. St. Rita was led by seniors Juan Lepe, John McCluskey, Fa- bian Sorrendeguy, ln Sik Yun, Pete Assensi and also junior John Niestrom, who is praised by Br. Frank as showing great fundamental skills and also as a future all state player. Another factor contributing to the success of the soccer team was the help and dedication of Coach Assensi, who is Coach Paduch's right hand man. Our soccer team would not have been as successful without Coach Assensif' stated Br. Frank. Another important feature this year was the start of a freshman team. St. Rita has never had a freshman team before because of lack of interestg however, this year interest was great enough to start a freshman team along with continuing the J.V. team. The frosh team was coached by Mr. Jack Fer- raro and Mr. Emil Radosztusf' Br. Paduch said. Coach Ferraro started from scratch and through dedication and discipline in himself and his players stablized the freshman program. Head Coach Bro. Frank Paduch watches the game intensely. 1 i Varsity Front Row, L to R: Fabian Sarrondeguy, Jeff Ciadonski, Mike Jones, Juan Lepe, John Niestrom, Mike Haas, Juan Roman, Mike Howe, Alex Majica, Arcadius Kacz- wara. The success of the K of A was attributed to the total participation of members and the selectivity of the fraternity. t'During the year our membership stayed the same because we were very selective when choos- ing new members, we looked for quality and not quan- tity, said Fr. The large darkroom that we were supposed to get this year never happened, said Photo Club moderator Ms. Denise Keller. Without a larger darkroom there's no way a person can teach darkroom skills, one of the main ideas behind making good photos. The club, dropped from nine members in l982 to five members this year. One of the main reasons for this decline is the fact that the school newspaper, the Ritan, and the yearbook absorb most of the members to shoot photos, keeping them busy with that work. l think the Photo Club should do all it can to revive itself because it provides a place for novice photographers to better their skills, said yearbook moderator Mr. Mike Riley, We can then benefit from having many trained student photographers at Rita. l. This year the book was hard to complete because l had only one meeting with Miss Zepeda before starting to put it together. So, we were unable to beat the deadline and publish it before the Seniors left, said new moderator, Miss Linda Marach. This was a fine book, however. We had record reviews -- a new feature - and the poems were outstanding, especially those by junior Tom Ryng. Next year we hope for faculty participation to in- crease overall school involvement in the book and to get more drawings and short stories. Special credit for this years book goes to editor Don Smith who was able to complete the book on such short notice. 'fztm i T 1 'I M T f , ii, . ' it , 'I l. Ted Matula finishes layout on a story. ALL AMERIGJLN V CW' H' -NTU IU FIFFEITU -NN The Ritan, St. Rita's All American newspaper, has been rated as one of the top 100 newspaper in the country for the past 5 years. We have been All American for 5 straight years with a 4 star rating. Hopefully someday we will get a 5 star rating and be namedl a Pacesetter, which is the elite of high school newspapers, commented moderator Mr. Donald Racky. l was very pleased and, satisfied with this year's editors and staff, they were hard workers, aggressive, and very involved with their work. Next year the Ritan will be looking for a good number of dedicated editors to keep up the quality that has made the Ritan a topl high school newspaper. We are losing some very fine editors to graduation, but we hope that they can be replaced by very competent people to help con- tinue the success that the Ritan has gained over the past years, concluded Mr. Racky. Ml was very busy this year with a full-time Loyola schedule and all of my editors were brand new - most of them had no yearbook experience. Now that the book is finally ready to go to press, I am relieved that the year is over and delighted by how the hard work of the rookie editors has produced a very solid piece of work, Mr. Riley continued. For the second year in a row the yearbook continued to have 100 pages of color - more color than any other high school year- book in the Midwest. We are hoping to eventually produce an all-color book, said photo editor Len Edling, Hbut the expense might stop us. l am looking forward to the 1984 Cascian because l think it might be the best we've ever produced since the editors have talent and now they have experience, Mr. Riley concluded. l. Pride in Rita also stems from the always active Parent Organizations: The Mothers and Father's Clubs, Hockey and Band Boosters, and the Alumni. According to Alumni Director Mr, James Segredo, 'They are a significant source of pride and support to Rita, they couldn't be replaced. Not many people realize that these clubs play a big part in our schoolg St. Rita would not be the same without them, he continued. Whether it is the lVlother's Club and the Father's Club in an obstacle course race, the Alumni reunions, the smoker, or any other of the many activities that these clubs hold throughout the year, they really show their pride and will always be a big part of the St. Rita community. l. But about halfway through the year they jelled as a council and by the end of the year accomplished more than any other student council in Rita history. sum' marized Mr. Kisicki. the Student Council moderator. The three accomplishments Mr. Kisicki is most proud of are the student recruitment program. the student attrition program. and the successful proposal tor a student representative on the Board of Administration. The student recruitment program involved over 65 Rita upperclassmen who served as student reps to parishes all through Chicago. Mr. Riley. Dean of Ad- missions, feels that this committee was Uthe single most important factor in our recruitment success 4500 new studentsi this year. The attrition program involves 50 specially selected upperclassmen who serve as advisors and guidance sources for freshmen who are in danger of flunking out or being expelled from Rita. The student rep on the Board of Administration will allow the student body a direct vote in all decisions that affect the school except teacher tenure and stu- dent expulsion.
