Mark Thedens who is in his first year as moderator for the band. This quality was ultimately a ma- jor factor in the band's emergence as the Chicago City Champion in the Music Bowl this year. This band competi- tion featured a field of thirty-three of the best high school marching bands in the midwest. In addition the Marching Mustangs finished second in their respective category. Throughout the year the band exhibited outstanding halftime shows and was selected to lead several major downtown parades, Br. Mark commented. Br. Mark at- tributes the band's success to the hard work and dedica- tion of the band director Mr. Louis Ricci as well as the rest of the staff. For the first time in Rita history, girls were admitted as members of the band. The girls were very instrumental in the development of a truly balanced band since they strengthened the vital woodwind and French horn sec- tions, said the moderator. Despite the band's many accomplishments and suc- cesses, Br. Mark was disappointed with the periodical lack of enthusiasm and cooperation among band members. His biggest disappointment, however, was his lack of availability for the band and his inability to attend band performances because of continuing health problems at the beginning of the year. Despite these setbacks Br. Mark maintained a bright outlook for next year. l am looking forward to an exceptional year with the addition of talented incoming freshmen and even more girls, Br. Mark concluded. 1. Bob Spontak trumpets for the Rita crowd between halves of a football game 2. Dave Kairis clashes his cymbals to enhance the tone of the band's music 3. Tim Deeter, spiritual moderator of the Knights of Augustine fraternity, The year went very well. Fr. Deeter attributed the success of the K of A to total participation by fraternity members. During the year there was an increase in membership, but many members felt that the largeness took away from the closeness of the fraternity. Thus, some members who seemed to be mere 'hangers on' were asked to leave, Fr. Deeter said. The K of A's annual retreat is always the high point of the year. This year a large group of fraternity members participated in a retreatlvaca- tion to Tennessee and Kentucky. All who went en- joyed the whole experience, he said. This was the biggest fraternity builder. Nothing too disappointing happened during the year except money problems, said Fr. Deeter. lt is sad to see how money can even break up a group like the K of A since so many activities rely on a certain amount of money. Fr. Deeter wishes to express his thanks to the school for all of their support during the year. lt seems each year more of a sense of Augustinian commitment with its members is established, and more knowledge of a spiritual side to the fraternity is attained, he commented. Next year the K of A hopes to be more selective and look for people who are truly interested in the fraternity and its ideas. I hope for a deeper sense of commitment, 100ofo attendance at fraternity functions, and freedom from debt. 1.Several K of A members attend mass before the induction of new members. 2. Skiers Visit Europe This year was the most successful the ski club has ever seen, said Fr. William Neis, moderator of the St. Rita Camp and Ski club. He attributes the club's accomplishments to a good, 80-member participation and a wide variety of trips. The most exciting trip for the Ski Club this year was their trip to Europe during the Christmas holidays. The club traveled throughout Europe, including stops in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Rome where they had an audience with the Pope. During the trip members had many chances to ski some of the most famous slopes in the worldg one of which was the Olympic Slope in Innsbruck, Austria. Another reason for the club's success were the six short weekend trips to the near-by slopes in Alpine Valley, Wisconsin, DeviI's Head, Michigan, Wilmot, Michigan, and slopes near Cadillac, Michigan which made it easier for many more members to travel. Since this year we saw and skied the best and most famous ski slopes in the world, com- mented Fr. Neis, lt's hard to say what is next. Plans for next year are still in preparation but Fr. Neis has promised that the club will still be going strong and traveling on many trips in grder to remain an active and popular group at t. Rita. , y, I 'V M, 1. Five Earn Yellow Belts The club began large and ended small, said Mr. Jack Farraro, moderator of the karate club. l believe the same was true for the club last year. Mr. Farraro was disap- pointed that so many students dropped from the club. He believes the problem is a lack of discipline and time. A person needs discipline to stick with karate. A person must also be willing to give a lot of time to practic- ing. The students that left the club either didn't have the discipline or the time to give. Mr. Farraro gives much of the credit of keeping the club going to Chuck de la Riva, the instructor. He's a very nice man and is willing to spend much time with the students f to teach them the art of self-defense. Five members of the karate club were so dedicated that they earned yellow belts in karate. They are also the five students who joined Chuck's private classes. l'm glad to it see that these boys take it fkaratet so s seriously, said Mr. Farraro. Mr. Farraro stated that the club will con- tinue next year with much the same students and the same instruction. l believe, said Mr. Farraro, that the year will be repeated X unless the students become more dedicated to karate. 1. Chess Captures Catholic Crown Under the leadership of Mr. Norbert Lasky, the Chess Club overcame last year's bitterly disappointing loss of the Catholic League crown and virtually cruised to the Catholic League Champions this year. The Mating Mustangs maintained a 10-0-0 record during the regulation season fgiving them 26 consecutive wins over three yearsl and thus gained the South Section Championship. We were hoping to avenge last year's loss to Fenwick in a confrontation with the Friars, said Mr. Lasky. Fate, however, would not have it. Fenwick was upset by Gordon in the preliminary rounds and Rita was unable to play them. Never- theless, St. Rita captured the Catholic League crown by defeating Gordon by a margin of 4-1. In the State Playoffs the Chess Team managed to emerge twelfth out of 75 in the state. Despite this fine finish, Mr. Lasky pointed out that the Chess Team was not truly prepared for the playoffs since 8-man teams are required in- stead ofthe 5-man team that Rita is used to. 1. Games Expands The Card and Games Club, in its second year of existence, had an initial sign up of about 60 students. However, only about twelve members showed up at the weekly meetings, said Mark Kostro, club president. Even though the turn out was so poor, the club had a successful year, he said. The club meets once a week in the yellow room of Alumni Hall where they had room to spread out. During a typical meeting members played popular board games such as Risk and Scrabble. They also played other games like Dungeons and Dragons, Monsters-Monsters, and Tunnels and Trolls. The club was given S50 by principal Fr. David Brecht to purchase games. They bought games such as Auchterlitz and South Africa. In addition to these names a club member, 'Tom Ryng, developed a couple new games. Because of its popularity, one of these games, Gomadeon, brought club members five days a week to continue a long campaign. The game is going to be continued over the summer. Although this year was a fine year for us, we are looking to improve the club in the years to come, said Ryng. One possible event for the future is a Card and Games Convention sponsored by Rita, he concluded. 1. Enthusiasm Runs High Rita spirit is always good, said Mr. Mike Kisicki, Activities Director and Pep Club moderator. We don't have to work hard to inspire en- thusiasm around here. So in that sense Miss Whooley and I have easy jobs when it comes to moderating the pep club and cheerleaders. l'm always amazed at the number of students who turn out for the pep club, . Miss Susan Whooley, cheerleader moderator, continued. I think the high turnout is a tribute to both the spirit of our students and the hard work Mr. K does in keeping the pep club active all year long. This is not an organization that just turns out for a yearbook picture each year. They are always involved in Rita sports activities, she continued. 1.Bottom Row: Tracy Rampage, Laura Wadas, Maureen Archer, Sue Elias. SBS to Grow lt was a year of planning because of lack of equipment, commented Mr. Jim Misiora, moderator of the Student Broadcasting System. Since our equipment was stolen and we had to wait a long time for insurance money, nothing much was done in the SBS this year, stated Mr. Misiora. With the purchase of better, new equipment, Mr. Misiora hopes to have the SBS as active as it has ever been. Next year will be a year with profes- sionalism, declared Mr. Misiora. To accomplish his goal, Mr. Misiora hopes to have a program director who will establish a pro- gram log and have all of the members learn tech- niques regarding radio braodcasting. We want to establish news programs for the students during their lunch periods, and alternate the broadcasting format from a top 40 to a total album format, he said. The club must learn new techniques by listening to other professional sta- tions, he concluded. 1. Speech!Drama Provides Actors Miss Sally Jo Zepeda referred to the year as a bare one for the Speech and Drama club she supervises, but most would be impressed by the club's several accomplishments. The club, now in its second year at St. Rita, performed a skit for the annual bingo party, produced seven actors for the annual Maria High School play, and supplied clowns that entertained the retarded children in the Marquette Park special kids program. They did a beautiful job, said Activities Director Mr. Mike Kisicki, and Miss Zepeda is being too modest about the club's per- formances this year. Remember that the club is still a very new one and the plans that we have for next year should really help the club become a major part of the St. Rita activities program, he continued. 1. He also took flying lessons under Fr. Tyma's direction. I try to fly as much as I can, but l'm kind of limited by money. It costs 830.00 to rent a plane for an hour. Eventually, Kurt intends to become a flight instructor himself. The reason I tackled this whole project was because I feel everyone is trap- ped in a two dimensional world, he explained. A plane gives you a whole new dimension - it increases your world by 330A,. Mark Thedens, Chorus moderator. They cooperated magnificently throughout the year and displayed a great will- ingess to work. This devotion led to one of Br. Mark's easiest years of directing since he assumed the role of chorus director. They performed extraordinarily well at the Alumni Mass in October, he said. Their best performance, however, was at the Spring Festival, which included the chorus for the first time. ln spite of the chorus' achievements, Br. Mark still would like to have done more for the club. Health problems, however, prevented this. Unfortunately, the prospects for next year seem bleak. We will be losing 12 talented seniors which is about one-third of the chorus, explained Br. Mark. ln order for the club to be successful next year, we have to do a lot of recruiting, he concluded. 1. I think everyone wants to play guitar until they see how much work it takes to get good at it. The club gets together for practice sessions and some members perform with Miss Junkroski at several of the school's religious functions. I am not necessarily looking for students who are experienced musi- clans, Miss Junkroski continued. I am willing to work with novice guitar players and teach them to play suc- cessfully. The journal was completed entirely by the students and the moderator this year. They not only selected the material, they typed it, ran it off on the main office machines, collated and stapled it. At first I was ap- prehensive about doing all the publishing work ourselves, Miss Zepeda continued. ln the past we have had it printed by a professional printer and you can be a little more confident in the quality of the job when a pro does the work. However, thanks to a lot of hard and careful work by the students, we published a journal that was very well received. Miss Zepeda received very good feedback on the cover of this year's edition which was done by Dan Larking she also noted the important contribution of Don Smith who has convinced me to make several changes and all those changes have really been good for the book. 1. Donald Harkabus left St. Rita to take up new duties at Lewis University. Although the club did its best to be active several problems plagued its year. First, the space available to the club for a photography dark room is too small for group instruction, and, although Miss Keller has dark room knowledge, she could not teach her club members because of this problem. A second problem for the club is that many of the schooI's best photographers are absorbed by Ritan and Cascian work, but Cascian moderator Mr. Mike Riley believes that a photo club is an important addition to the activities program. I would like to see the club become a training ground for young Rita photographers and I hope that despite the problems the club has encountered, Miss Keller will continue to work with her organization, he said. 1. Interest High in New Club This year saw the beginning of a new activity at St. Rita - the autofmechanics club. Due to the efforts of Mr. Mike Kisicki, Activities Director, and Mr. Hank Heim, moderator of the new club, the mere idea of an autofmechanics club at St. Rita became a fact. Three car motors were donated to the school for use by the club, and a section of T-12 was set aside for a class for the club. The school financed the purchasing of tools with which to work on cars and the materials needed to build the classroom. I was very pleased with the club, said Mr. Heim. However, the students themselves became quite disap- pointed. We had a very late start tNovember or Decemberl which limited us to working inside on the car motors as op- posed to experimenting with whole cars. According to Mr. Heim the club had to start from scratch. We did not even have a room to work in. We had to spend about two months building our room and selecting the needed tools. Many of the members were discouraged by this delay and left the club. Even with the late start, though, the club members did get to do much work on the car motors and even did some work on Mr. Heim's car. Next year promises to be a good one for the autolmechanics club in the eyes of Mr. Heim. We will not have all the preliminary work that we had this year. The students will be able to start right in working on cars. Mr. Heim hopes to bring allihe students up to the same level and to actually work on some of the students' cars. 1. There was always something to do, com- mented Chris Moxley, a member and vice- president of the club. According to Chris the club directed a majority of its efforts towards the rebuilding of a helicopter. We spent a great deal of time cleaning and aligning the parts before actually beginning to rebuild it. After the rebuilding was complete, we installed a radio control unit. ln order to learn it, you must do it, said Chris Moxley, and that is exactly how Fr. Casimir Pazera, moderator of the electronics club, runs the club. Said Chris, lt is a free opportunity to learn. No one forces us to do anything. Moxley believes the club has helped him and the other members very much. Chris Moxley believes the club was more active and larger than in past years. Moxley concluded by saying that he is very glad to have been in the electronics club and that the club has been a great source of experience and knowledge. 1. Spanish N.H.S. Joins Honor Clubs Several high ranking seniors brought honor to themselves and to the school through their participation in two national high school societies - the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society - and through their per- formance on A.C.T. examinations which granted them the distinction of Illinois State Scholars. The newcomer at St. Rita was the Spanish N.H.S. with moderator Miss Susan Junkroski. The student organization is related to the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, an organization that the language teachers belonged to for several years. Each year the AATSP would send us a letter about the Spanish National Honor Society, and we finally decided that we had enough students to form a local branch of the society, Miss Junkroski explained. Fifty students joined the St. Rita SNHS chapter and officers were elected and an induction ceremony was being planned when the illness of Miss Junkroski brought the activity to a screeching halt. I'm a little disappointed that we couIdn't have accomplished more this year, but you can't control your health, she explained. The purpose of the organization is to give the students a deeper familiarity with the Spanish culture, and the St. Rita branch may eventually function as a service organization as well. We may do some work with the Spanish community of the south side, the moderator explained. Right now I'm pleased with the enthusiasm and willing to let the organization take any shape the students want it to. The National Honor Society which has long been established at St. Rita underwent a change in moderator this year as Mr. Donald Racky passed the leadership on to Mr. Joseph Bamberger. This year, as in the past, the members helped with eighth grade registration night, parent-teachers night, and the entrance examination. ln September the school will spon- sor a banquet for students who are being inducted into the St. Rita chapter of the NHS, Mr. Bamberger explained. We will also be honoring the top academic leaders of the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes on this day. I hope that this new, fresh start at the beginning of the school year will be an indication of a very active year for the NHS, he continued. The schooI's amount of Illinois State Scholars remained very consistent with previous graduating classes although the amount of college scholarships awarded to graduates increased considerably. I am pleased with this senior class, Mr. Bamberger said. They have done an outstanding job in their scholarship and their leadership for the school. nh-f K K National Honor Society: Cleft to rightl Bottom Row: Rich Young, Tony Krokos, Henry Frankiewicz, Mark Kostro, Tim Gerich, Jose Vela, Juan Mora. Tutors Merge This year's math club had to adjust to a new organization since Mr. John Bulanda, the previous moderator, left after last year. The math tutors were joined with the science tutors to form one club. The math and science tutors are now co-moderated by Ms. Susan Whooley, chemistry teacher, and Mr. Larry Genge, math teacher. Ms. Whooley believes that the club is an asset to the school. The tutors are ready and willing to assist students with problems in math or science, she said. The only problem is that the students don't take advantage of this aid. According to Ms. Whooley the students come for help mainly before the end of the quarter with the hope of being able to raise their grades. Ms. Whooley plans to better organize the club next year. We will assign students to particular tutors. lt's still up to the students, though, to come to us for help. Mr. Genge believes that the tutors are a good bunch of kids who sacrifice to be at school a little earlier every day, l thought they did a very good job and was very disappointed not to be able to take them out for pizza because of the lack of funds. I've tried other sports, like jogging, for example, but I have a tendency to give up after I start to lose interest. You buy equipment for each new sport, find someone else who's as interested as you, and at first you're real en- thusiastic, he continued. But it doesn't take long before the initial enthusiasm wears off and you realize getting in shape is hard work, he said. Membership in the weightlifting club was small this year but moderator Mr. Jim Angsten is making plans for in- creasing the size of the club and the size of the members in 1982-83. 1. Not many people realize how active the clubs are, Mr. Brodnicki continued. Because many of the clubs' ac- tivities are held after the regular school hours they are not as obvious as the things that happen in the classrooms from eight to three. A list of some of the activities that the organizations sponsored this year will prove Mr. Brodnicki's point: -Sunday Bingos every Sunday of the year -The St. Rita Smoker -Parents Weekend -The Football Banquet -The Hockey Banquet -The Turkey Raffle -Three Ad Books -Ushering at dances and sports events -The Fashion Show -The Faculty Christmas Party -The Installation Dinner -The Past Presidents Party -The Square Dance -The Spring Festival -The Christmas Dinner -The Homecoming Half Time Show -The Homecoming Hospitality Room -The Alumni Golf Outing -The Memorial Mass -The Alumni Reunion -The Alumni Newsletter Without their efforts and constant support, said Prin- cipal Fr. During the year the council brought alot of big-name entertainment such as Off Broadway for post Walkathon festivities and Steve Dahl and Gary Meier for Homecom- ing. They also brought about fundraisers to lower stu- dent prom bids like a Battle of the Bands competition and a Boxing night. The student council is a good ex- ample of the spirit of St. Rita, Mr. Kisicki said. They were able to initiate more pep rallies and were even able to think of a way to get players in contact with every stu- dent ofthe school in a new type of pep ralIy. The student council was also able to give Rita the lowest prom bid ever in St. Rita. The prom had a larger attendance than any on record. The student council was very active in the ad- ministrative field in that they frequently gave their opi- nions on many proposals given by the administration. We tried to get involved in the decision making pro- cesses of the school, said student council secretary Mike Lannan. There's no other way for the students to get their opinions voiced. They made proposals con- cerning the dress code, dismissal times, late detentions and many others. The council this year was very individualistic, com- mented Mr. Kisicki. State Congress Honors Ritan V The Ritan, St. Rita's All American newspaper, an honor that places the monthly in the top 100 newspapers in the country, I has received this award for the past seven consecutive semesters. Mr. Donald Racky, moderator of the Ritan, was pleased with this year's editors and staff. Mr. Racky felt that the members are more involved, more aggressive, and more compe- tent than those in past years. I He also felt that the Ritan members have been better organized under its Chief Editors. With their leadership, Mr. Rackyi hopes to improve the quantity and quality of the paper for the 1982-83 school year. I The Ritan was also honored by the Illinois State Congress for their superior journalistic accomplishments. I was really excited, said editor Tom O'Dowd, when the Ritan received the award. When Father Brecht received notification of the Congress's action he immediately informed Mr. Ftacky and told him that he wanted to make the presentation over the P.A. system after 1st period announcements. Both Fr. Brecht and Mr. Ftacky agreed that the editors of the paper should be present for the announcement, but they decided they would not tell them why they were being called tothe activities office. I thought at first that we must have done something wrong, claimed editor Dave Sakalys. lt was a perfect surprise. None of us had any idea what was about to happen. Later in the year the editors and Mr. Racky were honored at the pep rally during pride week. This has been a very good year for the newspaper, said Activities Director Mr. Mike Kisicki. lt's pretty unusual to see a newspaper receive the honor and notoriety that the Ritan gets. In most high schools nobody even knows who the newspaper editors are. Our paper really is exceptional and that's a great tribute to Mr. Flacky and his editors, Mr. Kisicki continued. Although two of the four chief editors will be lost to graduation at the end of 81-82, Mr. Racky and his staff are confident of continuing the All American streak. The system we have developed over the years ensures a pretty high level of con- sistency, Mr. Racky commented. I expect to have another good year with the new editors and new staff members because they will get a lot of help from our veterans staff members. K v I ! For the first time that we know of a high school is using over 100 pages of color in a yearbook. We have asked the publisher and he claims that he has never seen this done before anywhere in the country, he continued. For several years the Cascian has printed an opening sec- tion and its senior section in color. The regular budget of the book provides for the high cost of opening color, but in order for the seniors to have their pictures in color in the book they pay an additional five dollars for their yearbook. This year the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes were polled for their opinion on paying five dollars for their pictures being in color. The results were pretty surprising, Mr. Riley explained. The students seemed to be very, very supportive of the idea. And we have had no trouble in col- lecting the five dollar fee. The end result of the color experiment will be a 32 page opening section of color and all class sections will be in col- or, Mr. Riley continued. I think the best way to look at this year's book is as an experiment. We have tried several new things that we are feeling a little shakey about, but I think overall the quality of the book will be pretty high. 1. Mr. Misiora attributes the great success of the 1982 Illinois State Champion Hockey Team AAA Class to a team who knew what their roles were and accepted them - a team which never gave up. Out of the 19 members on the varsity team, only one player didn't compete before high school. The team was experienced in organized play, and the team's suc- cess proved it, added Mr. Misiora. The five senior players provided great leadership for the team. Another great plus for the hockey team was the excellent spirit and pride that the whole St. Rita community showed dur- ing the season. This year was the first year I have seen so much student support since the Kennedy Cup in 1974-75, declared coach Jim Misiora. The fans made all the games more enjoyable by 'firing up' the team and coaches. Mustangs Take 2nd in League lt was a disappointing year for the teamg our expec- tations, however great they might have been, were not met, commented Head Coach Pat Cronin. We are not sure what the reason was for our season's faults - maybe the injuries to our key players or our tough schedule. It was just one of those years. The Running Mustangs ended the season as runner- up in the Catholic League Playoffs, a 6-5 record overall, and second place in the League's South Section. We did have some fine performances this year, Coach Cronin commented. Ron Weissenhofer was named to the All-State and All-Catholic Teams, and Bill Mulchrone was named All-Catholic, aIso. Even though Coach Cronin heads into his 25th year of coaching, his philosophy on winning remains the same from year to year. No club can win consistently without senior experience. Next year's team will only have three returning starters from this year's team. We will be inexperienced at the start of the season, but by the time we reach the season's end and our toughest games of next year iagainst De LaSalle and St. Laurencel, the team will be ready to take on any opponent. Next year's schedule is in our favor because we play the easier teams in the beginning of the year and the harder teams either at the end of the year or in St. Rita Stadium. Coach Cronin said. With the help of the assistant coaches, senior leadership, and 'Lady Luck', the team will bring home a Championship Trophy. 2 3 1. Winning the State Regional for the first time in the school's basketball history was a very nice end to the year. Overall, the year was successful for the Mustangs who posted a 15-11 record. We started out slow in the open- ing games, losing by close margins, coach Walaszek said. Since Bob Bischoff was hurt, we started four juniors. As the juniors gained experience, the team got better. Our program for the next couple of years should be strong. Coaches Mike Kaczmarz, Jack Janeczko, Jim Prunty and Mike Moyzis did an excellent job at teaching the younger kids the basics, said Coach Walaszek. Second place in the Catholic League and a 33-9 overall record is still a fine season though. I am already looking forward to next year. Next year's varsity will only have two starters from this year returning, but Coach Moyzis is not worried. We will have two frosh-soph teams with a combined record from the past two years of 56-3 coming up to varsity level, explained Coach Moyzis. Tennis Improves The tennis team continued to improve upon its record of years past. They finished the Catholic league season with a respectable record of 5-5, the first time they have not had a losing record. Overall the tennis team registered an 8-5 record. Our main goal was to improve on last year's performance, commented Coach Norb Lasky. Although we did accomplish this task, declared Coach Lasky, we could have fared much better. Mr. Lasky was referring to the close games which they could have won if the entire team had played well. The Swinging Mustangs even had the opportunity to defeat tennis powerhouse St. Ignatius but due to in- consistent play ended by losing 3-2. In spite of their record, the tennis team did quite well since they had such little time to prepare for the season. According to Coach Lasky tennis teams are not allowed to practice before March 1 and matches begin at the end of March. Other schools work around this rule by including intramural tennis in their curriculum or by playing with indoor clubs. Despite these problems Coach Lasky stated, I anticipate an improvement over this year's record with con- sistent play from our two returning juniors. 2. Golf Needs Experience We started the season off on the 'right foot' by defeating St. Ignatius in our opening match, commented golfer Dave Cronin, and ended up improving from last year's record of O-8. The Swinging Mustangs finished their season at 2-4. ln its third year of competition, the golf team is coached by Mr. Gene Sweeney. lt was Coach Sweeney's first year, so both players and coach learned throughout the season, responded Cronin. According to Athletic Director Jim Segredo, The team needs ex- perience. Next year's team will be a young one that needs more playing time. New Coach Seeks a Unified Team The St. Rita Running Mustangs were disappointed with the year's outcome and yet very surprised. This was the first time in four years that the St. Rita Running Mustangs haven't won in the District's race. John Herlihy qualified as an individual, but the team finished fifth in a race where only the top four teams advance. However, the team had a much better record than expected. With the small turnout of runners, change of coaches and loss of talented run- ners, the runners were expecting a very poor season. To their surprise, though, they won many races that were predicted losses. Mr. Hofer, the new head cross-country coach, was disappointed at the disorganization of the team. lt was my first year as head coach and I wasn't sure how to organize things, commented coach Hofer. Mr. Hofer was pleased with the teaam's performance and singled out John Herlihy as an excellent runner. John showed that he had worked hard over the summer and during the season. I believe that John was the only runner actually able to handle the pressure. In the same way, coach Hofer hopes the other team members will learn how to accept and deal with the pressure. Mr. Hofer was also disappointed with the attitude of many sophomore runners. We lack a large number of sophomores this year, said Mr. Hofer, and that shouldn't have happened. Mr. Hofer did praise Mr. Genge, though, on bringing the sophomores a long way. Larry Genge continues to be a wonderful sophomore coach, said Mr. Hofer. A new addition to the coaching staff this year was Mr. Tim Scanlon. Mr. Hofer believes that Mr. Scanlon is a very positive addition to the team. He has great spirit and is dedicated to the athletes, said coach Hofer. Coach Hofer mentioned Joe Madden as a fine leader and Mike Villa as a positive surprise. Mr. Hofer said that Kris Koczwara had lots of guts, and that Eric Welch had learned a lesson about working too hard, especially during the summer. Mr. Hofer was pleased with freshman runners. Tom Garvey, Matt Stapleton, John Barrett, Ed Hurley and Don Tuell did a great job, especially after they lost two very good runners - Jesse Hernandez and Joe Bury, Mr. Hofer said. The freshmen need more of a base and more general development. Mr. Hofer looks forward to next year. He believes that the team has a strong foundation and that the key to suc- cess will be unification. Track Coach Terms Runners as Dedicated The varsity track team had a good season as it finished in fourth place in Catholic League competition. It was the team's best finish in the past few years, but the season's highlight was the capturing of the Catholic League championship by the frosh-soph team. Coach Jack Ferraro commented, Next year's varsity team will have great depth and experience because only a few of the seniors will be leaving the team. Head coach and Athletic Director Jim Segredo is looking forward to a championship season next year. We know that the team is strong enough to compete with the track powerhouses. We participated on a state-ranked level when the team was invited to race in the Oak Park Relays, the most prestigious and difficult meet in illinois. Coach Ferraro believes that the team's success rests on the dedication of the runners. These kids are terrific runners. Even with the changing of coaches over the past few years, these kids hve managed to continue do- ing a great job. Coach Ferraro stated that normally his lack of experience as a track coach would have hindered the team, but these runners already knew what they were doing, largely due to their past experience. Coach Ferraro concluded, With the returning varsity and the champion frosh-soph team that we have, a coach has to be optimistic about next season's performance. 1. The soccer team finished this season with a record of sixteen wins and five losses. The highlight of the season was the victory over St. lg- natius. lgnatius had an excellent team, and our team simply out-played them, said Br. Frank. Later in the season, however, the Mustangs met De la Salle and suf- fered defeat. Because of that loss, the soccer team missed being Catholic League champions by one game. The Kick- ing Mustangs then advanced several games into the state play-offs before losing to Quigley South. Br. Frank praised Bob McCluskey as the best player on the field. Bob did a great job on and off the field and he received the Most Valuable Player award at the banquet, said Br. Frank. The frosh-soph team finished their season very well also. The frosh-soph team, however, is not aimed so much for winning as it is for preparing the young athletes for the var- sity team. The frosh-soph team is a fundamentals-only set-up in which the players become acquainted with the technical aspects of soccer, said Br. Frank. Br. Frank has planned a tougher schedule for next year, but only because the team will be more competitive. The year will begin with some pre-season games against some tough state-ranked teams, said Br. Frank. I hope the ex- perience will help the team in the Catholic League season. The state play-offs will then be like the pre-season all over again, but this time the team will have the knowledge and experience needed to be a tough competitor for the state title. 1. There are several things that still need work and many of these things came up at our end of the year ad- ministration meetings. I think we finished the year with strong directions about what to do to make St. Rita even stronger in the future. Among the new programs this year was a parent night in which the parents followed a mini-schedule of their sons' school day. Parents traveled through all of the school's six class periods, meeting each one of their sons' teachers. The teachers explained what material was covered in their classes, and many discussed their grading procedures. We have been trying consistently now for the past couple of years to include the parents more in their sons' education, said Admissions Director Mr. Michael Riley. We think by including the parents and making them a part of the whole process we will have a much better chance of helping their sons become better students. Other involvement for parents included a mandatory meeting of the parents of freshmen who had multiple failures in the first quarter, a meeting with a discipline office representative and the parents of students who were put on disciplinary probation, as well as the standard parent-teacher nights. Every year we get closer to our goal of making all of our students successful, said Mr. Bamberger. Next year we are beginning a new program for teacher enrichment. Many of them will be visiting each other, trying to share ideas about teaching techniques and ap- proaches that we hope will make our students better learners. At the end of next year we will review that pro- gram to measure its success, he continued. Overall, l think our administrators work very well together, Father David Brecht, Principal, commented. We had a very successful year and we have to keep our small problems in perspective. You can't lose sight of the many good things while working on the things that need improvement. 1. Fr. Theology Dept. an Example for Dthers SL Rita has the best theology department of any other high school in the city of Chicago, says Mr. Zimmerman, the author of several texts concerning theology. Mr. Zimmerman often sends his texts to St. Rita to have them reviewed by the Theology Department, said Br. Charles Prevender, chairman of the Theology Depart- ment. We at St. Rita read Mr. Zimmerman's books and criticize the book as we see fit. Mr. Zimmerman receives the criticism gratefully. Br. Charles agreed that the Theology Department at St. Rita is very well coordinated. There were no major changes since last year except for the addition of Fr. Van Overbeek and Br. Chis Howe. Thus, Br. Charles doesn't feel that he can take full credit for the great organization. At our department meetings, commented Br. Charles, I don't make any major decisions. We vote on everything together. Br. Charles feels that the Theology Department meshes well with the Christian Formation Department. Fr. Murphy and Br. Charles, being very good friends, are able to talk things over and make the two departments work well together. New Teachers Make Job Easy for Chairman This has been a very good year for the department and myself as well, stated English Department Chair- man Dr. Donald Racky. lt was a much better year than last because the new teachers that were hired for 1981-82 school year have been much stronger and more competent than those in years past. Many people doing little things have helped Dr. Racky have a smooth year and lessen the burden of being department chairman. He also says that the at- mosphere ofthe student body has made teaching a little easier. Mainly, the one thing that made this a good year for Dr. Racky was the involvement and commitment of the teachers and the students. The teachers have become more involved in helping the students perform better and the students have gotten serious about their work and their attitude toward school, Dr. Racky added. Next year, the department will become more stable since no new teachers will need to be hired. This will lessen Dr. Racky's burden even more since he will not have to explain the demands of the department and try to break in new teachers. 1. English Department Chairman Dr. Donald Racky is in his twenty- third year at St. Rita and teaches the Honors English I, ill, and IV classes. 2. He attributed his opinion to the fact that new teachers Mr. Jack Ferraro and Mr. Woody Ur- chak have blended very well into the depart- ment. Mr. Misiora pointed out that the more ex- perienced teachers in the department have maintained the high standards established over the years. The revived Psychology Class taught by Fr. William Neis was another plus for the department. Mr. Misiora is also very impressed with the continued success of the Advanced Placement Program. Last spring, twenty-six seniors in the program earned college credit on the high school level as a result of taking the A.P. test. These scores represent the top ten percent of all the schools in the country. What St. Flita does in one year, other schools might ac- complish in ten, Mr. Misiora added. Next year Mr. Misiora hopes that the gains made by the department will continue. He was very pleased that the state purchased the sophomore history books for the first time and hopes this support will continue to be offered in the future. I am confident that the new elec- tives being planned for next year will be just as beneficial to the students as those offered in the past have been, he concluded. 1. Science to Flow Better Next Year The better structuring of the science cur- riculum is the major change coming in the next school year. We want a better flow of courses from year to year, said Mr. Robert Gasiecki who has been the Science Department Chair- man since 1980. The better structuring of the curriculum will enable students to have their science requirements filled earlier and thus open up more room for electives in senior year. With the science requirements out of the way earlier on, students can take more electives that will help them in college instead of losing that opportunity by taking a science course that could have been taken care of sophomore or junior year, Mr. Gasiecki added. Another reason for the change is to eliminate the digres- sion of courses. In the past it was possible for a student who took Biology or Chemistry to take Modern Physical Science which is a much easier course as compared to the other two. The new structure would make the student pro- gress to a more challenging course instead of a less challenging one. Mr. Gasiecki is confident that such a plan will succeed because of the experience of the teachers in the department. The experience of our department is just about unmatched at St. Rita. Teachers like Mr. Phil lgoe and Mr. John Hartl each have at least fourteen years of teaching at St. Rita and the only new teacher, Mr. Don Krystof, has spent seven years teaching at l.l.T., Mr. Gasiecki added, as a result, we have had no major problems and a very smooth year. Next year will also see the return of the Ad- vanced Placement Chemistry II course. The course is offered to juniors and seniors and is alternated every year. Mr. Gasiecki hopes that the success achieved since A.P. Science pro- gram started will continue on into the future. With the overall improvements in the school in- cluding the purchasing of new equipment for the science department, the future success of the St. Rita Science Department is certainly assured. 1. Mr. Robert Gasiecki is the Chairman of the Science Department and has been at St. Rita for eleven years. He holds a B.A. from Western illinois and teaches Biology. 2. In his second year at St. Rita, Mr. Martin Quinn is teaching Biology and Earth Science. Mr. Donald Krystof is a newcomer to St. Rita and holds a M.S. from the University of Illinois and also teaches in the math department. Mr. Philip lgoe came to St. Rita in 1964 and holds a B.S. from Western Michigan. Mr. John Hartl, now in his fifteenth year, teaches Physical Science and is one of the Athletic Trainers at St. Rita. ln her seventh year at St. Rita, Miss Susan Whooley teaches Chemistry land ll and Physics and holds a B.S. from U. of I. - Chicago Circle. Extra Help Aids Students The rapport between student and teacher is a continuing reason for our success in this department, stated Mr. Norb Lasky, Chair- man of the Math Department. The dedica- tion of the teachers as shown in their efforts to aid all students having difficulties sets this department apart from all the others, Mr. Lasky added. Mr. Lasky attributes the success of student-teacher relations to the work of teachers Mr. Don Krystof and Mr. Mike Walezek in their first year at St. Rita and to the extra help given to students by Fr. LaVern Flach and Mr. Lawrence Genge. Fr. Flach and Mr. Genge offered their help before and after school and this help was very beneficial to the students who took ad- vantage ofthe offer, Mr. Lasky said. Presently, the possibility of an integrated math program is being considered. This pro- gram would encompass the elements of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus at four different levels and would be the first department to integrate its courses if the program goes into effect at St. Rita. ln addition, Mr. Lasky is trying to impose a three year or even a four year math program. The ever increasing demand for more years of math by colleges and universities along with substantial increases in the numbers of incoming freshmen with low mathematical ability makes a program like this ideal, Mr. Lasky concluded. 1. Mr. Norb Lasky is the Math Department Chairman and has been at St. Rita for nineteen years. He is moderator of the Chess Club and Head Coach of the Tennis team. 2. Mr. Mike Walezek is in his first year at St. Rita and teaches Algebra and Geometry. Communication in the Class Is the Key The Foreign Language Department intends to place an emphasis on communication in the classroom during the 1982-83 school year, says department chairman Mr. Gregory Pawlowski. The future success of the French Ill and IV classes will depend on communication and I feel the actual speaking of the language in the classroom will be a great benefit to the student in the end, he added. Part of this communication emphasis will also mean an increase in the use of the Language Lab. A new series of French tapes has been ordered for use next year to complement the new text books. The new French tapes will add to the already ex- cellent stock of Spanish tapes now in use. The Spanish Ill and IV classes will be shared by Br. Mark Thedenso and Ms. Sue Junkrowski next year. Mr. Pawlowski feels that Br. Mark's many years of experience and Ms. Junkrowski's classes for native speakers of the Spanish language will combine to form the most capable Advanced Spanish program at St. Rita in years. Stability is a key in this department, Mr. Pawlowski added. Every teacher in this depart- ment has at least two years of experience or more and is teaching in areas of preference and com- petenceg they not only like what they are teaching, but they want to be there. For example, Mr. Mike Cronin is the moderator of the Freshman Class and teaches only Freshman Spanish, Mr. Pawlowski stated. The department is also aiming for St. Rita students to get involved in the National French and Spanish Contests. Mr. Pawlowski feels that the increase in communication of the language in the classroom will be the key element for achieving recognition in these national contests. 1. Mr. Gregory Pawlowski, in his sixteenth year at St. Rita, is the Chairman of the Foreign Language Department and teaches French I and ll. 2. Br. The course offered col- lege credit for high school work without taking a special test, as in the Advanced Placement courses offered in other departments at St. Rita. The students who took the course earned their credit at the end of the year automatically, said Mr. Joseph Bamberger, Dean of Studies. There was a full class and every student earned some credit for his work, however the course will not return next year because of low student interest on the course surveys. Next year will mark the return of Br. Joseph Fisher to teach the Art class. I am glad to see Br. Joe come back to St. Rita because his presence is a real plus for this department and St. Rita as a whole, concluded Mr. Bamberger. ff-'TM tus' 1. M-N'-'st f '4' 9 Keller a Plus for Data I was concerned about the future of the Data classes when Br. Joseph Fisher was transferred last year but we have found a very capable replacement in Ms. Denise KeIler, stated Dean of Studies Mr. Joseph Bamberger. Because of her work, interest in the Data classes has in- creased. For the first time in the history of the school, an aptitude test was given to find the most capable students from the many that expressed interest in the surveys for next year. Ms. Keller also got some of her students to enter the Computer Science Fair at Loyola University. I found the experience very rewarding, said Tom Cabanski, who was one of St. Rita's entrants. I am considering a career in the computer field and the fair gave me an overall view of the computer world at large. With the expanding use of the computer, I think St. Rita provides a good start for anyone interested in the field. '1-tw' 1. Fr. Business Grows Mr. August Jeffery, Business Department Chairman, has witnessed the doubling of student interest in business-related courses this year. Accounting I and ll, Business Law!Economics, Money Management, and Typing all showed substantial increases of class sizes. As the emphasis for careers shifts toward more commerce-related fields, St. Rita students are taking advantage of the business courses offered here. I am very pleased with this, said Mr. Jeffery, because a lot of our graduates are heading for careers in the com- merce fields. Accounting classes are at the forefront of increased enrollment, there will be five full Accounting classes next year along with a very promising Advanced Ac- counting class outlook, Mr. Jeffery added, but don't underestimate the other business courses though, St. Rita graduates have received many business scholar- ships from many reputable colleges and universities that weren't just for Accounting. St. Rita has one of the most complete and thorough Business departments for a high school in the country and will better serve the increased need for people in the commerce field in the future. 1. Mr. August Jeffery is the Chairman ofthe Business Department and holds an M.I.S.R. from Loyola. 2. Mr. Richard Grill has been at St. Rita since 1968. Marine Test Strong tor RE. For the second year in a row the gym classes utilized the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Program to get St. Rita students in top shape. I can't believe how tough that work out is, said sophomore Bill Langlois. But I know that I will be in good shape at the end of the course. I have no choice. Gym classes at St. Rita are divided into thee parts: tal calisthenics and running to get students in shape, fbt basketball fundamentals to teach team sports, and ici weightlifting to increase body strength. Our classes this year were hampered by Coach Cronin's illness and absence, said department chairman Mr. James Segredo. Mr. Angsten was forced to double his load in order to cover the classes. Average gym classes have now been organized by class so that freshmen are not mixed with sophomores or juniors, but an average gym class size still hovers near 80. Each year we try to improve the gym classes, Mr. Segredo continued. We have no specific plans for a big shake up in 82-83. Just look for a steady im- provement inthe quality of the classes. 1. Mr. Jim Angsten is now in his fourth year at St. Rita and received his M.Ed. from the University of Illinois. 2. Counselors Aid Admissions For the past three years, the Guidance Department of St. Rita has been expanding its number of personnel and increasing its connection to the attrition work done in the Admissions Office. According to Guidance Department Chairman and Prior of the St. Rita Augus- tinians, Fr. Roland Follmann, a major improvement in the quality of the department is attributable to Mr. James Elijah. Jim has really taken over the work done with the freshmen and sophomores, Fr. Follmann commented. I find that this year I am much more relaxed about the work with the younger students because I trust Jim and have complete confidence in the professionalism of his work. The guidance office has increased its connection to the admissions office primarily because the work of the two offices often overlap. Mr. Guy Hofer, a guidance counselor and Assistant Admissions Director, com- mented, Both offices deal with students who are hav- ing difficulty with grades, teachers, peers, home life. You name it and we try to deal with it if it has an effect on the student's performance. 1. Fr. Roland Follman is the Director of the Guidance Department. Services Key to Growth Frequently the people that provide student ser- vices are overlooked or taken for granted because they do their work quietly and behind the scenes of the school's classrooms. However, their role in the school is essential to the smooth operation of the high school. The bookroom, for example, is extremely busy at the start of each school year when all the students are purchasing their books for the first time, but it remains busy throughout the year as it provides students with class supplies and the biweekly novels for English classes. The audio-visual department run by Mr. John Stobba was very busy during the 1981-82 school year because of the demands placed on it by teachers who wished to use the school's new audio-visual equipment. Video taping is very popular and many of the teachers and club moderators want to take advantage of this relatively new source of entertainment and infor- mation, Mr. Stobba commented. The library, under the direction of Miss Rae Alford, is also an important source of information for classes that demand students learn topics in more detail and depth than is provided in a text book. Many sophomore students, for example, use the library to research the topic given to them by Theology teacher Br. Charles Prevender. The cafeteria has remained the same for many years because the only way to improve service is to expand the facilities, according to Mustang Spa manager, Mrs. Dorothy Paulson. lf we had the room to fit the equipment, l would have a large pizza oven with at least three cooking tiers, and a deep frier, and a lot of other equipment that would make our work easier. But expansion is impossible so we do the best to please the students in the space that's available, she said. One loss to the school's service personnel is Mrs. Gertrude Marczewski who will retire after 18 years of service at the end of the 1981-82 school year. Mrs. Marczewski has seen both her sons and her grandsons attend St. Rita and will be very dif- ficult to replace, Mrs. Paulson commented. 1. Mr. John Stobba has been at St. Rita for twenty-five years and runs the A-V Department. 2. Fr. Tyma Loss I-lurts St. Rita As Business Manager of St. Rita, Fr. John Tyma has been extremely busy throughout Fr. David Brecht's reign as principal since Father has continually sought to improve the school's 75 year old physical plant. Father Tyma has been invaluable to me, Fr. Brecht commented. And each year I have worked with him I have come to appreciate more and more his service to the school and monastery. One indication of Father's contribution is that when he leaves St. Rita at the end of the 1981-82 school year he will be replaced by two men - one who will be in charge of the school and another in charge of the monastery. Father's new assignment will involve his talent as a pilot since he will be servicing an area in Alaska which is reachable only by plane. khg::,,-. y . 1. Fr. Development Big Part ot Rita's Success When you talk about St. Rita fund raising, said Development Director Mr. Thomas Brodnicki, you have to talk about the tremendous job our students do. Because of them our school's budget is in good shape and we can even make major improvements to our physical plant. This year student fund raising pro- duced a 300,000 dollar gross with most of these dollars resulting from the most successful calendar drive in the school's history. The average per stu- dent on the drive was 816 calendars, or a gross of 240,000 dollars. We had hoped that each student would produce a minimum of 120 dollars because we had budgeted for that amount. Naturally we have many projects that we want to see become a reality, and because of our students' support we have already accomplished things we had only dreamed about in the past, Mr. Brodnicki continued. Funds from the successful 1981-82 drives will go primarily to the new front stairwell for the Chapel Building, although some additional funds will be channeled to pin ball machines and other improvements for the Duffy Stu- dent Center. Fr. Martin Sobiesk will be giving up his post as Associate Principal of Development and Alumni Director at the conclusion of the 1981-82 school year to take up new responsibilities at St. Rita parish. Father will be replaced by Mr. Brod- nicki who hopes to increase alumni par- ticipation and generate new alumni in- terest and financial support. The past principal of St. Rita Grammar School, Fr. Ronald Turcich, will become the Alumni Chaplain. I hope to run a large number of small events for the Alumni this year, Mr. Brodnicki said. l think we can generate a lot of interest by run- ning reunions of guys who belonged to the same sport or organization. At the end of the 1981-82 school year, the Development Office was busy with a feasibility study conducted by the consulting firm Sumner G. Rahr. The results of the study will give St. Rita solid information about the direction the school should take in fund raising and capital improvements for the next several years. 1. Fr. Edward Steven Griffin Fr. Edward S. Griffin O.S.A. Born October 24, 1907 Professed September 10, 1982 Ordained June 10, 1940 Died January 2, 1982 We have come together this January morning to offer up the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for Edward Steven Griffin. Ed- die, as we called him, at the age of 27 wrote to the Augusti- nian Order requesting acceptance as a postulate. The letter of recommendation from his parish pastor was a magnificent endorsement. The priest said, This young man comes from one of the best families in my parish. Everything that I know about him is in his favor. I am delighted that he is joining your Order. After receiving dispensation to shorten the time between his professions, Fr. Griffin was sent to St. Rita Parish. He taught 8th grade at St. Ftita's and took tremendous interest in the children. He was the one who organized the basketball teams, some of whose members went on to greater things. Those who remember him during those years speak well of him. He was always a gentle priest, a kind priest, a gracious priest, a compassionate priest. Now he is gone. What is there for us to do? Pray for him. The souls of the just are in the hands of God. They are at peace. It is as Shakespeare once said, Every man is going to die once. We owe God a death. ftaken from the Homily Given for Fr. Edward Griffin's Funeral by Fr. Francis Fentonl In Memoriam - His Eminence John Cardinal Cody Archbishop of Chicago Born December 24, 1907 Ordained a Priest December 8, 1931 Archbishop of Chicago June 16, 1965 Died April 25, 1982 With the death and burial of Cardinal Cody, the Church of Chicago closes the eleventh chapter of her history since she was raised from mission to diocesan status. His Eminence was Chicago's fourth cardinal, sixth archbishop, and eleventh bishop. The Cardinal brought administrative and financial skills to his work in Chicago. These were valuable in fund raising and in maintaining support for inner city schools and parishes through subsidies from the archdiocese and the efforts of adoptive parishes in other areas. Among the Cardinal's many accomplishments is his im- provement of the quality of education in the schools and in the seminaries. His attention to the ministerial concerns is evident in the archdiocesan permanent deacon program and the fact that Chicago has the largest permanent deacon pro- gram inthe country. Tributes and expressions of sympathy from the Holy Father and other civic dignitaries have acknowledged the Cardinal's spiritual leadership. May he rest in peace. ' fm. Q i. xr in-'zfgq W QAM , N Rita Cutstancling in All Aspects St. Rita is a school that has pride as its middle name. This school not only has a great academic and athletic program but a sense of pride in Rita that always comes first. A person can be the smartest stu- dent in the country or the fastest runner in the world, but if he does not have pride in his school, he is not a true member of that school. The students and faculty know whether or not a person has pride in his school. A person cannot fake pride. The academic program at St. Rita has been rated as one of the top one-hundred programs in the coun- try for the past few years. St. Rita is one of the most organized and well-run schools than any of the other Catholic schools in the city. The athletic program is also a great tradition at St. Rita. Our teams have done very well as a whole and individually. Last year the varsity baseball team was co-champions of the Catholic League. The sophomore team had a wonderful season and fin- ished first. Football, the most popular sport at St. Rita, took the state championship in 1978. This year they had a good season and finished second in the League. St. Rita basketball, a very well-coached team, advanced to the quarter finals in 1982. The hockey team had its best season ever. They ended the Catholic season in third place and won the state championship for the first time in Rita history. The track team had a good indoor season and a promis- ing outdoor one. In the activities department, St. Rita has more clubs and extracurricular activities than any other high school in the state. St. Rita's own Student Coun- cil is working hard to show that pride in Rita will con- tinue for a long time into the future. The Council gives its best in particular activities, surprise events and Pride Week. This year St. Rita Pride Week has twenty-six events making it the biggest and best ever in Rita history. These facts should prove that St. Rita has the best and the most pride than any other Catholic or public school. - Denny Fritch 1. Wayne Wawrzyniak Brian Whalen Timothy Yanahan Manuel Zuniga P Rita s Pride Shows Through Pride in Rita is something special to every St. Rita student. The students take great pride in what they do, whether in academics, after-school organiza- tions, or athletics. This past year I have noticed a great uplift in pride at St. Rita High School. The sports teams have been led to many victories by the support of the fans. Even at an away game in a northwest suburb, the Rita fans outnumbered the home crowd. The students, particularly the juniors and seniors, were great ex- amples of pride in Rita. Twice this year we had pep rallies in which the juniors and seniors were given the option whether to attend or not. The upper classmen could have gone home, however, a large number stayed, cheered the team, and psyched them up for the game. The biggest example of Rita pride, in which I took part, was this year's Pride Week. This year Pride Week was organized in such a way that it had the most events in Pride Week history. The planning and organization enabled a ma- jority of the students to participate. Pride in St. Rita this year was probably the highest it has been in the last couple of years. l think it will continue through the years to come. - Mike Madden 1. The hard work has paid offg it has given me a great sense of accomplishment. I helped to arrange two concerts, The Kind and MSR Rush, and helped organize a student boxing night. Both events helped to lower the price of the Junior prom bid. During Pride Week I helped arrange many events for the student body. These events helped the students to express their pride in St. Rita. Along with the above activities, the other class of- ficers and myself assisted in staging some of the most successful pep rallies in Rita history. We also assisted the seniors with their events and fun- draisers. The cooperation has made this year a great one for St. Rita activities and for myself. - Joe Madden Junior Class Officers: lleft to rightj Brian Coe, Bob Haugh, Pat Gorman, Mr. Ron Nowak lModeratorl, Joe Madden. sf. .5 FE? 5 X : , ii 4 4 4 t 455122 A xr ,:1,.w , , . 1, QM ,, Q Q 2,6 .L 'R 1. vs. we K 5' 3 bw f f Q Q W ' ' w 5 X V4 . Through the leadership of senior members and Council president, Dave Monday, the Senate achieved many ac- complishments. The Senate gained the respect of both Fr. Brecht and the Board of Administra- tion. Fr. Brecht did not hesitate to consult the students' representative body for suggestions to solve several problems about the school. The Student Council sponsored another successful Pride Week, many participated, had fun and felt proud to go to St. Rita. The Student Council also offered several successful proposals to the Board of Administration. These proposals were directed toward the benefit of the students. The 1982 Student Council worked hard for the school, it followed the great pride and traditions of past councils. The Council will continue to be a success because of the great people who at- tend Saint Rita and make it the school that it is: THE BEST! - Mike Lannan Senior Class Officers: fleft to rightj Mr. Mike Kisicki tModeratorl, Don Mitchell, Mike Lannan, Ron Risden, Jim Gorman.
