In Memoriam - Edward William Duff More than any other student to ever walk the halls of St. Rita, Ed Duffy was the spirit and the example of everything our high school stands for - ln Memoriam by Mr. Mike Kisicki, 1980 Graduation. Ed Duffy came to St. Rita High School in September 1976 and he left us all too soon. The heavily-recruited football star from St. Rita grammar school brought his magic and his laughter, his athletic talent and his strong leadership to St. Rita High school in a way that will never be forgotten. He was the Tom Sawyer and the Paul Bunyan of St. Rita. He was the mayor of 63rd Street, with a touch of Falstaff, Robin Hood, Mayor Daley and Babe Ruth - Ray Sons, Chicago Sun-Times, May 20. 1980. Ed played football on a Rita freshman team that went 2-6 in 1976 and on a sopho- more team that went 0-5 in 1977. Ed became captain of a team that won the Illinois State Championship and was 13-0 in 1978, and who were South Section Champions and 8-2-0 in 1979. This is a terrible blow. Ed was a super kid f Head Football Coach Pat Cronin. Ed was the President of the Junior Class in 1978-79. He sold 1100 tickets for an 800-seat gym to raise funds for thejunior prom. He ran for President of the Student Council in 1979. He won hands down. He was the best man. I'm glad he won. He was the best student leader this school ever had - Defeated candidate and fellow senior A1 Romero. As Council President he reorganized the Council, revived the Student Senate, he sponsored Homecoming, nine dances, the largest senior prom in a decade, a student newsletter. He presented over 25 proposals to the Administration. personally, on behalf of the Senate and the students. He raised S1300 for paralyzed graduate Johnny Dal Camo. He was Mister Mustang. And then, in a tragic seaside accident in Florida, he was gone forever. We don't write the mles. I don't know why he was killed f Mrs. Thomas Byrne. He is now with the Great Coach, undoubtedly because Heaven needed a captain, and no one was in the same league as Duf .. . - Fr, Richard McGrath, Funeral Mass. May 21, 1980.
