This year we have endeavored to weave the ideas contained in it through the pages of the yearbook. We hope that it will become even bet- ter known through this medium and serve as a guiding light to the students who are graduating. IOX AITX AND SPIRIT 'I IIROUC H HONOR Our fmlc. Of Honor . For St. Rita high school can point to the Rev. Ruelleu P. Fink, prior of the Augustinians here, and former rector of St. Rita, as its real tradition. For Father Fink is the man who has made St. Rita High School what it is today. To him, whose untiring work in the efforts to make St. Rita High School known, respected and recognized as a major educational institution, this book is respectfully dedicated. Father Fink is a man who believes in getting things done - and he found out long ago the easiest way to get them done is to do it yourself. lt was through his constant work, efforts, and toils that St. Rita was built into the largest boys' Catholic high school in the Midwest. He was also the leader in the establishment of a second Augustinian high school in Chicagos south side. Mendel Catholic High School. At present Father Fink is spearheading a successful drive to raise funds to build an Augustinian seminary in Chicago. Approaching this project with the enthusiasm of a bongo drummer in Calypso rhythm, his driving efforts and determi- nation are making the realization of the seminary a certainty. To the man who has dedicated his life to boys - and to St. Rita boys in particular - we say Thanks and Gratitude! 3 XJ Xl 6 S, P, in MJ k X i . 3 ,HA .A ,,. ! 5 -ft Q f - W ff' . This is the main purpose guiding the Religion Depart- ment. Courses are arranged throughout the four year program so as to teach those ideas which are necessary not only for the present moment, but also for the whole life of each Rita man. The fundamental truths of our religion are Well taught and the application of these truths to the problems facing each one are pointed out. Vocational guidance and counselling comes under the direction of this depart- ment in a special manner. The Chaplains and the other teachers in this department endeavor to assist each boy in understand- ing his particular problems and needs. Page 12 RELIGIII Y EP BT IE Fr. Sidney Horne, 0.S.A. In the Language Department we find two groups - the English Department and the Foreign Language Department. These two work together to assist all the students in arriving at the desired end - the ability to express ideas clearly and correctly. The program of the English Department is so arranged that the students are taught the rules of grammar and their applications both in the written word and the spoken word. Literature is taught to develop an appreciation for finer forms of expression. Latin, Spanish, and German are the other languages on our program. One or more of these are offered to each student to meet his needs and requirements. An opportunity is thus afforded to each to learn whichever language he feels is most advantageous for him. With this as its guiding principle our history department presents to its stu- dents a look at the world from the beginning of man down to the present time. Civics and United States History show the development of our country and the complexities of our government on both the local and the na- tional scale. A better understanding of these ideas makes them more ready and capable of handling their responsibilities when they have to take over the reins of government. A look into world history and the other branches gives a better understanding of the problems facing them. Page 20 Ill 'TUIIY DEP RT Fr. john lfitzGcrz1ld, O.S.A. Mr. Bernard Brown Fr. It in- cludes both the physical sciences and mathe- matics. Four year courses in each are offered to the students who have the ability and the desire to learn all they can in this field. Gen- eral Science, Biology, Physics and Chemistry lead the student to explore and learn more about the world in which he lives. In the field of Mathematics the student is exposed to the mystery of that term x in his early days and when that obstacle is sur- mounted he goes on to find out what the Greeks did in the field of Geometry. Ad- vanced Algebra, Trig and Solid Geometry are also available for the more industrious. Page 24 -2 ' X if v 1. Here the students have explained the ideas in the helds of book- keeping, shorthand, typing, business law and economics. Ample opportunities are given them to put these ideas into practice each day in and out of the classroom. The training they re- ceive is meant to lit them to step into posi- tions in the world of business when they graduate or to go on to college and prepare for business administration. This review of the various activities and happenings of the year is a full time job for an able and competent staff. Time and effort are given unsellishly in the hope that this will be an accurate and inter- esting record to be browsed over in the years to come. Ken Scipta had the task of editing the book, assisted by a competent group of sen- iors and juniors. Of course no assignment would be complete without some faculty direction. This was given by Fr. Edmund Burke, O.S.A. and Mr. Ed Kc-llow. Opportunities are offered them to serve Mass in the Monas- tery each clay and they have proven faithful in all their assignments. One of the major objectives of this activity is to teach the students a greater appreciation of the Mass and to create in them a clesire to have a more intimate understanding of its meaning, Page 110 Fill! A word of advice to the rest of the student body - before starting any arguments first inquire whether your opponent is a member of the Forum. These boys, under the able guidance of Mr. Arthur Sifferle, have learned well the principles governing debates. Regular sessions are held in which they have opportunities to put these principles into action. As they develop proficiency in this field they make trips to other schools where they test their skills in debates on various topics. The Forum this year has enjoyed a very successful season and the members are to be congratulated on their accomplishments.
