Equally true, there's more to a good school than doors and windows, or bricks and cement. lt's the students and faculty that give lile to a school, that give it a good name or a bad one. St. Rita High School is proud ol' her good name and the men she turns Ollt and, as beneath a sturdy body there beats a strong heart, the strong heart within the walls ol' St. Rita is its lac-ulty, priests and laymen. l'The men behind the man make the man, and it is our laculty, in its unselfish devotion to growing Catholic men, wliith schools and trains minds now, builds character lor the luture, and prepares souls lor an eternity. In fact looking back you can,t account for them. So much happened! But graduation is here, and with the happiness it brings there's a tinge of sadness. Faces we saw every day we will probably never seen again, the laughs and jokes in class, boners we pulled, the 'ijugs , and those bang up intra- mural games are all over now, gone but not forgotten. It's strange but true: you can't Wait to graduate, yet you hate to leave in so many ways. St. Rita was good to us, and we trust the school is better for the class of 1957 having been here. The Sophomore age is an awk- ward one, so they say, since you shoot up so fast physically. But you grow up other ways, too. As Sophomores, we have the feel ol' things at St. Rita now, we think, and this year's Sophomore class showed its worth best by the overwhelming support it gave to the Propagation of the Faith drive. YVhat better proof oi' the unseliish spirit that burns in our sophomore sections, a spirit that canlt help but make St. Rita what we all want it to be. Last September St. Rita did her share to satisfy the heavy demand by opening her doors to over 700 new students. The step inside was 21 big one for them - but a happy one! Going from grammar school to high school meant a change of life and ways: new faces in the classroom, being taught by men instead of women, getting used to new rules and surroundings. But in a few weeks the greennessn wore off, and boys began that miracu- lous change of growing upu, becoming young men and no longer children. Yes, high school is a new world, and at St. Rita a man's world! Freshmen here are treated like men, and they like it. Page '70 V25 lflflelfl Section 1-A Row 1-C. XVitek, R. Hanley, R. In the service, in business, ar1d on vacations Americans are rubbing shoulders with people we once only read about. Language is now the biggest barrier to understanding the people ol many countries. This partly explains the heavy emphasis on foreign languages in many schools. St. Rita offers her students Latin. Spanish, and German. To add a flavor to these Courses, the background, cus- toms, dress, and habits of the people speaking the tongue are also studied. Singing a rousing German song, reliving Roman life in the Coliseum, or sitting in on a Spanish fiesta, gives a deeper understanding ol the language An in- sight is gained that dull exercises ol memory can never give. It is in this way that languages really take on life, and the world-vision of students is broad- ened. It is an important step, too, in learning to get along with the people of other lands. Besides the student members of St. Rita, girls of various high schools were accepted in order to make it possible to enrich our programs. Shortly after we sang the opening-Mass of the school year, we presented a program to the Jarents and friends of the members under the title of Gettin to Know You. I S During the Christmas season the Glee Club received a selective invitation from the Com- monwealth Edison Electric Company for a program of Christmas Carols. The program was very well attended and a great success. The parents and friends of the Glee Club were also invited for a special Christmas prof gram in the new annex of St. Rita's High School. VVe were happy to see the great interest for our work on the part of our parents and friends. The Glee Club assisted in the Christmas celebration at the Sunday before Christmas and the Mid-night Mass in the St. Rita's chapel. In the spring at the invitation of the Mothers Club another program was presented at their Past-Presidents Night. Alter joining with the band in the Spring Festival, the season was brought to a close with the singing at the Graduation Mass and Exercises. Several weeks before school began, the Band was 'Kwhooping it up at the Democratic National Convention in the Ampitheatre at the invitation of Governor Chandler of Kentucky. A few more weeks of intensive drill and the season was on for the Show Band - a gay night at Riverview Park's Mardi Gras and then several outstanding shows at the football games - under the superb direction of Bob Black, '40, be- ginning his second decade as Director. The Chicago Cardinals Football Club invited the Band for the Giant's game, and after favorable com- ment from fans and television viewers invited them back again for another show at Comiskey Park for the Steeler's game. The Marching Band was the 'Best band in the land' at the St. Patrickls Parade on State Street - the outstanding televised parade of the year. The All-Star Band performed indoor shows for a college doubleheader at Chicago Stadium and for the Globetrotters at Rockford. The Spring Festival in May saw the Band in Concert at Maria Auditorium after pre-vue performances at St. Hedwig and Angel Guardian Orphanages. Page 101 me qQifan One of our school's most rewarding and interesting activities is the publication of the school newspaper, the Ritan. The clack of the typewriter, the feverish activ- ity ol the stall, and the thunder of its moderators' voices are familiar sounds in the Ritan Room in Egan Hall as the paper is made ready for the printer. This dead- line strain, however, is forgotten when the finished product is ready for distribution to the student body. The Ritan offers the members of its staFf an opportunity to look into the field of journalism as a possible career in the future. The moderators of the Ritan, Fr. Flynn, O.S.A. and Mr. Jeffrey have tried to extend this opportunity to as many students as possible. The aims of the Ritan have always been to inform and entertain the students, to keep the high ideals of their faith and school before them, and to act as a me- dium of their opinion. Under the editor- ship of Roger Flynn, the Ritan Staff this year has accomplished these aims in eight excellent editions and are certainly worthy of a hearty, YVell done! Top Standing: T. Cousins, F. Fathers Burke and Van Sile took over the modera- tor's responsibilities, while the burdens of the editor fell to Robert Mucha and Ken- neth Scipta. A year book is meant to be a keepsake for a lifetime, not just a day or a year. More hours go into trying to make the Cascian such a keepsake than the casual reader of our yearbook realizes. YVork starts early in September with the scheduling and taking of class and activity pictures. A cover and design that's different and appealing has to be picked, dummy pages arranged and touched off by a catchy caption or write-up, and finally a double and even a triple check is made of all the copy. You pray that not too many names were left out or misspelled, or feelings hurt. Spread over the year, the work adds up to countless hours of sweat and worry. But it's worth- while if the Cascian wins a nod of approval in its attempt to tie together the school year. There is the further hope that it will find a lasting place on your bookshelf at home, and help you in the future to recap- ture some of the memories and joys of the good old days at St. Rita. The Fathers' Club of St. Rita High School has been in existence for 27 years. The club renders valuable service to the school by its contribution of time, effort and money. The members of the club usher at all athletic events and dances, con- tribute trophies to all athletic teams of the school, and willingly assist at nearly every project the school sponsors. The Fathers' Club also sponsors the football Banquet every year, in addition to sponsoring a trip to camp for the football team each August. From the dues of the members a fund has been set up to pay tuition for the sons of members who have died while their boys were still in school. All fathers should belong to the club. Membership entails no obligation to be active, but does lend moral support to the active members. The club meets the sec- ond Friday of every month. Page IUT 04lnmni The St. Rita Alumni Association started the year off with the annual memorial Mass for its deceased members. The Mass was celebrated by Father Thomas McGowan, O.S.A., Alumni Director. Father McLaughlin, O.S.A., the new Rector of St. Rita High School, preached the sermon. After the Mass all alumni present were served breakfast and attended the Homecoming football game. Regular monthly alumni meetings were held on the First Tuesday of each month, September through June. This yearys activities included the Alumni-Varsity basketball game, held just be- fore Thanksgiving, and the third annual Alumiii Ball, held at the Holiday Club on December 28th. The basketball award din- ' ner, sponsored by the Alumni, t took place at the Club Casino on April 4th, An all opponent team picked by the St. Rita basketball team was invited to the banquet, each player receiving a trophy. The Hnal social event was the annual Alumni Banquet, the largest ever held at St. Rita. It was held this year in the Casino Room of the Morrison Hotel on April 24th. Approximately one thousand attended to honor the Silver Jubilee Class of 1932. Much of the credit goes to the mothers of the students because, as the saying goes, Where you find a good son you'll find a good mother! The St. Rita mothers have proven themselves again this year, as the Mothers Club under the guiding hand of Father John Flyn, O.S.A., had a banner year. Nor was there a lack of stirring because several hundred couples were dancing there - in the gym. 'Twas a beautiful sight though - the annual Christmas Ball. The gym was set up in cabaret style with tables along the sides of the gym and Waiters serving from the Coke Bar. In the center of the gym was the gaily decorated tree and streams of evergreen branches with lights and icicles produced the effect of a ceiling. Johnny Allen's popular orchestra set a fitting tempo for this - the first couples dance sponsored by the Band, which the Oflicers of '57 under the presi- dency of Larry Puchalski instituted as a new tradition. It is hoped that the Christmas dance will become not only the most popular dance but also the loveliest affair of the school year. They were led by a new skipper, Chuck Rheinschmidt, who was the line coach under Ed Cody, and moved up to the head position when Mr. Cody resigned to accept a college coaching job. The Mustangs dropped two pre-season warmups to Gordon Tech. and St. George, but shifted into high gear when the regular season got underway. They rolled over their first three opponents - St. Mel, Mendel, and St. Elizabeth - and were the sole possessors of first place. However, the Red and Blue lost a heartbreaker to Mt. Carmel and were defeated by Leo's fiery Lions as Lady Luck turned her back to the Rita eleven on two successive Sundays. They got back on the victory trail in the last league game by tumbling De La Salle, to post an impres- sive f -2 mark for their efforts in the league campaign. Rita then moved into the playoffs but were eliminated in the quarterfinals by highly-rated St. George. X'Ve bid farewell to all the seniors of the 1956 St. Rita grid squad: -Iohn Herman, Jerry Doyle, Ray Schaak, Lou Antonacci, Ron Marolda, Pete Caruso, -lack O'Rourke, Don Pikulski, Tom Tierney, and Ray Tuminello. RITA 19 - GORDON 25 The 1956 St. Rita grid season got off on the wrong foot with the Mustangs falling before a highly improved Gordon Tech eleven in an exhibition game. The Red and Blue drew first blood on a Marolda-to-Herman TD aerial and Jerry Doyle's plunge for the extra point. The northsiders bounced back with two scores in the lirst half and another in the third period to take a 19-6 edge. The Mustangs then came back with two TD's to knot the score at 19 apiece, but then Gordon tallied on a 65-yard run to take the decision. ST. RITA 14- - ST. GEORGE 27 The Mustangs met St. George's Dragons in their second exhibition game, and dropped a heart-breaker. The two teams squared oii at Lane Tech Stadium and battled to a 7-7 deadlock at half-time With Jerry Doyle blasting 2 yards for the TD and tackle Ray Schaak toeing the PAT. St. George whipped across two quick scores in the third period to gain the lead that they never relinquished. Marolda rifled an aerial to Herman for the other Mustang tally, and Schaak converted again, but it wasn't enough to overtake St. George. ST. RITA 32 - ST. MEL 20 With the experience gained from the exhibition games, our league schedule got off on the right foot. St. Mel felt the kick. Doyle and Herman provided the Red and Blue scoring punch, tallying two times apiece as Rita toppled Mel in the first league game. Krupski also tallied on a 5-yard dash, Schaak added two extra points. The Mustangs were on the short end of a 20-14 score at the end of three periods, but burst forth with an 18-point spurt in the fourth and iinal quarter to annex the victory. Doyle and Herman collaborated to treat the crowd to a thrilling pass play in which Doyle started to run wide and then lofted a 60-yard aerial to Herman who carried the piskin into the Mel endzone. goofdall -lerry Doyle races around end for short gain against Mendel. ST. RITA 19 - MENDEL 12 The Mustangs made it two in a row with a 19-12 Conquest over their arch-rivels, Mendel's Monarchs, leaving St. Rita in a deadlock for the South Section lead. It wasn't until the last play of the first half that the Ritans broke the scoring ice with the Marolda-to-Herman combo team- ing up for the TD. Schaak's PAT attempt was low, and Rita was on the long end of a 6-0 score at halftime. Four plays after the third quarter got underway, the Mus- tangs crossed Mendel's goal for the second time, with Jerry Doyle racing around end for 8 yards and the tally. Rita scored once more, this time it was a 66-yd. jaunt by Dovleg O'Rourke rammed over for the extra point. Although the Monarchs crossed the Red and Blue goal- line twice, Rita held its lead. ST. BETA 32 - ST. ELIZABETH 0 The Mustangs notched their third consecutive victory against no league losses, thus entitling them to the undisputed possession of first place in the South Section. Doyle and O'Rourke, flashy Rita backs, led the 32-0 drubbing by dealing all the fatal blows in five touchdowns. jerry Doyle accounted for three and Jack O'Rourke tallied twice. Yocko Herman split the goal-posts with a pair of extra points to complete the route. ST. RITA 6 - MOUNT CARMEL 13 Rita suffered their first league setback at the hands of Mt. Carmel's Caravan, 13-6, in a spine-tingling encounter at Soldier Field. The Mustangs fought Carmel to a scoreless draw at the half, but fell behind 7-0 in the third period. They came back on a Marolda-to-Antonacci pass that covered 33 yards and netted the Ritans a touchdown. Herman's try for the PAT was blocked and the Mustangs were still one point shy of Carmel. The Caravan scored again, and although the Red and Blue fought valiantly and desperately, they could not erase the Carmel advantage. Besides having to endure their first league defeat, the Rita eleven was severely hurt as jerry Doyle received a concussion in the course of the action. ST. RITA 7 - ST. LEO 33 The Mustangs, in a first-place South Section showdown at Shewbridge Field with the Lions of Leo, fought hard and gamely against the mighty Lions. Their spirit was outstanding, as was the spirit of the student body throughout the year. The only drawback was that the Ritans were playing With- out the services of their star back Jerry Doyle who was injured in the previous game. The Red and Blue took the opening kick-off all the way into the Leo end-zone, with Jack O'R0urke going the last 4 yards and also charging over for the extra point. The Lions then took over with their hard-charging team and scored five touchdowns and three PAT. The loss set the Mustangs back into a third place tie with Mendel. Page 123 oo fha!! ST. RITA 20 - DE LA SALLE 18 St. Rita closed out the regular season and qualified for the Catholic League playoffs by beating De La Salle's Meteors 20-18. Jerry Doyle, returning to the line-up for the first time since suffering his head injury in the Carmel game, sparked the Mus- tangs to the victory with repeated bone-crushing drives. The Ritans drew first blood when Herb McGuire, the Mus- tang field general, lofted an aerial to Yocko Herman who leg- ged it into the end-zone. ST. RITA 0 - ST. GEORGE 28 . .. Playoff Game St, Rita's Mustangs fell before the mighty St. George Dragons, 28-0, in the quarterfinals of the Catholic League Playoffs. The one-sided score was deceiving for the Ritans played a fine game and were strong in defeat. The Red and Blue re- peatedly threatened to score and even had one touchdown called back because of a penalty. res man oofgall The freshmen football team was small in size this year, and outweighed by almost every team it faced. But the players learned with the bumps of each game, and re- fused to give up. Their grit payed off as they finally tasted victory in the last two games. The schedule was made up of games with Mendel, Loyola, De Paul, Gage Park, and Mt. Carmel. There's more to football than throwing a pass and carrying the ball, and its as freshmen that our future varsity men learn the ropesw. They pick up the ABCs of blocking and tackling, and gain game experience, all so necessary before moving up to the varsity in the years ahead. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Row 1: D. Kopez, T. Rogovich, YV. The sport's growing popularity in Chicago and over T-V is reflected among St. Rita students, with about 300 taking the alleys each week at Gage Park Recreation. So many were eager to bowl this year that Father Senke, O.S.A., had leagues bowling on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a travelling league on weekends. Even two priest teams bowled this season, sparking the interest and competition. A picked team had a few matches with other high schools, our bowlers more than holding their own. The Ritans gave a good account of themselves in the final half, but the Ironmen got hot in the third period and pulled away, although Rita outpointed them in the final quarter. joe Scanlon chalked up 26 markers in the losing cause. 4-th League Game ST. RITA 61 - MT. CARMEL 64 The Red and Blue lost a tough one to Mt. Carmel in an over- time contest. The defeat was doubly hard to digest since, at one point in the second quarter, the Mustangs enjoyed a 16-point cushion, 33-17. How- ever, Mt. Carmel came back strong in the second half and in the final seconds tied the score at 61 up, sending the game into overtime. The Cara- van dropped in a basket and a free throw while holding the Ritans score- less, to dominate the overtime. 5th League Came ST. RITA 60 - ST. RITA 34 - DE LA SALLE 53 The Ritans again were subdued, this time by the De La Salle Meteors. The Mustangs employed both a press and a stall to try and upset the highly touted De La Salle quintet, but found themselves on the short end of a 10-2, lst quarter score. The Ritans bounced back in the second period and were only down 5 points at halftime, but it was to no avail. 7th League Came ST. RITA 55 -- ST. Using substi- tutes freely in the second half, St. Rita coasted to victory. 9th League Came ST. Scanlon with 19, Praupolenis with 17, and Valaitis with 15 tallies paced the Ritan onslaught. 11th League Game ST. RITA 62 -- LEO 69 The Mustangs dropped a tough 69-62 decision to Leo, after yielding their halftime advantage. The Red and Blue cagers fought a valiant battle all the way, never letting Leo get too far ahead, but they couldn't muster the power to over- come the Lions. Scanlon and Valaitis with 19 and 15 markers, respectively, took the scoring laurels. 12th League Game ST. RITA 43 - DE LA SALLE 48 The Mustangs closed the conference season on a sad note, dropping a narrow 48-43 tussle to De La Salle. However, the Mustangs came within reaching distance of derailing the sectional leaders, De La Salle.
