Egan Hall, Harris Gym, Green Hall, Circa 1930, foreground football field and we wire! lecacle 1925 was a year of expansion which saw the construction of a new unit in the school plant. The new building, to be known as Egan Hall, was equipped with the most modern class room facilities and laboratories. lt was completed by September of 1926, and it was opened for the school year. lmmediately it relieved the burden from over-crowded Green Hall, where in addition to classrooms were living quarters of the priests and faculty mem- bers. Reverend loseph B. Kepperling was appointed rector to this bigger and better St. Rita H.S. ln March 1929, a plan was conceived to bring together the mothers of the students of St. Rita H.S. Because of its many achievements, and its as- sistance to the administration and faculty, the Mothers Club became one of the more prominent parent school activities. Father Kepperling was a brilliant and progressive administrator. How- ever, after only three years in the rectorship, he died lune 4, 1929, the end of that school year. His immediate successor was the Reverend Iohn I. Harris. lt was during his administration, that two St. Rita publications had their origin in 1930. The high school newspaper the Ritan, was the first of these, the other was the yearbook, the Cascian, a name previously used for an earlier bi-monthly magazine. Ph the period preceeding 1931, St. Rita had become well known for its championship baseball teams. ln 1928, 1929 and 1930, St, Rita won the South Section Championships, and in 1929 and 1930 went on to win the Catholic League Championship. An increase in the number of students in 1930 caused the demand for a larger library. Accordingly it was enlarged six times its original area. A book drive was held in which thousands of books were acquired as dona- tions. Finally, in October of that same year, the library was reopened for use. Because of the success of the Mothers Club, the Fathers Club was organ- ized in 1930, One of its first successful protects was the remodeling of the stadium. A new cement wall surrounding the stadium was built, and new wooden stands were set up. The dedication was held on September 27, 1931. Mayor Cermak presided at the dedication, which was climaxed with a football Qame 15 l we g0lfl,l fA meal Q 1935 to 1945 ln the su::.1iLer of 1935, Reverend Ruellon 13. Fink succeeded Father l-larris. Father Fink has been tire motivating spirit of many noteworthy developments of which the most important achieve- ment was the installation of a technical course in 1936. The opening of the course increased the enrollment by 25 per cent. The goal of the technical school was to capture the title, best equipped technical high school in the city. With the com- pletion of an aero-engine shop, and a large automotive shop in the new Mendel technical build- ing, opened in lune 1938, this goal had almost been reached. ln August 1939, a second great achievement of Father Fink was accomplished. lt was the addition to Egan Hall. ln the new section a cafeteria was added, and the public address system was installed throughout the school plant. Before the school newspaper had reached its 10th anniversary it had won three awards. ln 1937 the Ritan received First Honor in the Catholic School Press Association, and in 1938 it was given the All-Catholic Award, the highest honor attainable in the Association. The Award was bestowed again to the Ritan in 1939 for the second year in succession. Vtfhen St. Rita opened her doors in 1940, there were almost 1200 students enrolled. The en- rollment has gradually increased due to the introduction of the technical course in 1936. The new enrollment surprised even the most optimistic. Father Fink's prediction that there would be 1,000 boys attending St. Rita in 1940, was surpassed by nearly 200 students. This high enrollment made St. Rita the largest boys' Catholic high school in the city. ln lune 1941, there were 205 boys grad- uated from St. Rita, a new school record. Another important event marked the month of lune, 1941. Father Fink was elected provincial of the newly created midwestern province of the Order of St. Augustine. The new province was under the patronage of Cur Lady of Good Counsel and was composed of all the territory west of Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains. The coming of the Second World War gave St. Rita men a chance to show their unmatched spirit. Rita men, alumni and students, went to war. Some were destined never to return. Others would return, crippled, but always courageous and hopeful, a mark of the Rita man. ln 1942 more than 200 Ritans were serving their country. The war never hampered operations at St. Rita. By 1943 there were more than 1,000 Ritans serving their country in every branch of the armed forces, and during 1944 the number of Rita men in the service steadily increased. At least seven members of the faculty left St. Rita to serve their country, tighting shoulder to shoulder with former pupils. They too brought honor to St. Rita. The first Cgscian since 1942 was presented to the student tidy, Things were getting back to normal after the wat. A new football stadium was built, making our facilities for football among the best in the city. The Mustang football team took to the field that year with but one thought iii mind, 1: great season, They achieved their goal. The Mustangs became South Section Champions with seven vit,-fories, no losses and no ties, a fine way to dedicate our new stadium, Boxing was revived, and under the .guidxnce of Frither Crawford our boxers scored wins in six out of eight meetsg 1947 was indeed a good year for our boxers. By the time classes began for the year 1948 over 1500 students were enrolled at St. Rita. A driver training on se wzs now instituted at our school, a step to instilling good driving habits in our students. The groundwork for the Monastery began early in 1948, and was completed in 1949. There had long been tr need for new housing facilities for the Faculty. As enrollment in the school increased, there also had been an increase in the faculty. The priests were now living in very cramped quarters. With the completion of the mon- tistery, there was ,rgain sufficient housing for the faculty. Now the Augustinians have one of the finest monasteries in the midwest. The year 1952 brought many things to St. Rita. The most important was a City Championship in Basketball. This feat will always be remembered by Rita students as ranking with the most important historical markers in the schools history. The feats of last seasons victories were still fresh in the minds cf students. The 1953 squad had a very suc- cessful season. St. Bit-r still had another championship to gain. This time it was the Varsity baseball team. For the set-ond time it took the Chicago Amateur Baseball League Championship. Tho 1954 lvlust-ina luaslcethall terms provcd outstanding. The Senior and lunior teams both took South Set'- tion honors. The heavics were defeated in the playoffs, but the Juniors went .111 the way to take the Catholic League Championship. ln the schools physical plant, many improvements are underway or are being contemplated. These should improve our work, a little at least. This is the fiftieth year cf St. Rita s existence. She has come a long way. She can be proud of her accomp- lishments. She can raise herself to new heights. The way is clear. Her alumni stand out in all the professions. in the arts and sciences in business and civic enterprise, in politics and government. In Chicago, throughout the middle west, throughout the nation and throughout the world itself, Bitans stand to move forward as their school has rnovfid lrzrwtird :luring these past fifty years. lndeed this is the golden anniversary of St. Rita High School. gnu? 51.3174 5 518074 f mug 1.llf Opposite Page 5 4 The lztest building on the Campus-the Mone ,rstery -- completed in 1948. 1.Rl7 5 es' 'fn' 5 I Y ., .i 1 fe -'f 55.3774 SXKRH4 .1 is 'F v , fa ' 'Q , t n A E' ' fl 5 2 kg I . x 51 ST' 'UN mr, The two top pictures: excavation well under- way and the structure over half completed. The ideals ot education change according to the demands ot the times . . . St. Rita began as an Academic High School. ln the course ot the years new departments have been added to its curriculum chietly in the spheres ot Tecn- nology and Business. But, fundamental to the St. Rita ideal is the principle ot tashioning the Christian Gentleman. This, tor the past halt-century, and tor possible centuries to come, has been and will be the reason tor St, Rita. The Chapel is the center ot School lite. lt stands as a symbol ot devotion to the ideal ot forming the Christian Gentleman, and as recognition ot the tact that the one permanent ele- ment in all education is the formation ot the students character according to the principles ot Christ. Once again it is our pleasure to report a season that was tops for the St. Rita Band . . . lt all started way back last lune when the new, inexperienced, and somewhat eager freshmen were rounded up to learn the tricks of the trade. They worked throughout the summer and then were ioined in mid- August by the upper classmen who prepared together for the first event of the year e- the Mardi Gras Carnival at Riverview . . . Then came the long and eventful football season. ln both victory or defeat the band stood out head over heels above the rest, leaving the crowds wide-eyed and cheering. Those who viewed especially the Fenwick show, which was this year's Homecoming Game, were well satis- fied knowing that this show as were all the others was performed with the precision and tact which only the St. Rita Band has. The annual Columbus Day Gridiron tussle saw the Seniors tripping the luniors l4-7 and the Turkey Bowl laurels were taken by the reeds 13-6 . . . Gene Scararnella, trumpeter and Andy Borowiak, alto-saxophonist, were the representatives at the All-State Band this year at Charn- pagne on February 4-5. The Swing Revue, February l3, left the audience wide-mouthed with praise . . . This year the band added some- thing new in the form of a boosters' association composed of band par- ents and friends who desired to help in the upkeep of the band. Also added was a color guard detail which added to the band appear- ance. After nine months of activity by the different bands the Concert Band clirnaxed the year at the An' nual Spring Festival . . . Behind the crowded schedule just outlined in brief is a well knit organization that really does and dies for the Alma Mater , . . lt starts at the top with iet-propelled director, Robert A. Black and Father Henry McArdle, band moderator. Also assisting them was loseph R. Eraci, lr., Louis Ricci, Gino Pacetti, and loseph Kasperski. Offi- cers Keith Thedens, Gene Scaramel- la, Skip Waldron, Andy Borowiak and Larry Puchalski along with their assistants Paul Iurik, Willy Schmidt, Tony Nowak, Bob Grelak, and Ed L-R Piicetti, Ricci, Eraci, Fr. Bob Dougherty's beautiful 77 yd, run through the Leo team, the rain, and the mud was the game's lone touchdown. Kev O'Neill's conversion was successful. The second half was played under a continual downpour and saw no scor- ing. Twice the Mustangs fumbled within Leos five yard line and both times Leo recovered. But the Rita line always held and gave the Mustangs a well deserved victory and a clean shower! RITA ' LOYOLA Fourth League Game Mustangs-19 Ramblers-14 Determination and a second half rally gave the Mustangs a well-earned victory over Loyola's inspired Ramblers at the Ramblers lake side Stad- ium. Spoo to Bierkley pass and finally a l yd. plunge by Bob Spoo to score. As the P.A.T. attempt went wide, the Mus- tang's rooters seemingly lost hope. Heading this list of teams was the Varsity, which consisted ot luniors and Seniors. Since there is no Catholic Baseball League the Varsity played games on a home and away basis with other Catholic Schools and Public League Schools. Fr. Hayes was the coach who handled the Varsity nine. An America Legion team was formed by Fr. O'Malley. This team consisted of the luniors who were on the Varsity. The American Legion team won the second round ot play and the players received trophies for their efforts. The Liberty League team also coached by capable Fr. O'Malley, was victorious in the McKinley Park League. They won the Park Championship with a l4-2 record. The Midget team participated in the Byrne Field League where they amassed a total of 13 wins as compared to 3 losses, which was good enough tor second place. r N Cztching-Kcvaleski Batting - fvlarik :nd C itching: - Kcvclesici , ,S le ,ik Slczski r 1 x ii Y ., Jy......,. f T7 ik... aff.: ,Ng JJK4 I f This w-4.5 N -f-.J .J 5 9 fi fi wmv, W -1-Q., Q t I Sig 411-k,F1. l.I,OM11llf1y . .....'s .,, , 6 , f 6 Ulf! The sessions lasted 25 weeks with 30 bowlers in the Senior Division and 48 in the Iunior Division. The teams that led in the Senior Division were the Dirty Duces and the Hot Shots, and in the Iunior Circuit, the leading teams were the King Pins, Lazy Four and the Lucky Spares, all fighting for first place. The Rev. Father Senke O.S.A. was again the moderator and the primary reason for a very success- ful year of bowling. For the first time under his moderatorship, officers were elected. They are as follows: R. WOZNIAK, President: R. PICKUL, Vice President: S. DUDAS, Secretary. Some of the outstanding Keglers during the season were BOB VIDRA, AL GORKA and STEVE DUDAS members of the Senior League. Leaders of the lunior League were R. PICKUL, R. WOZNIAK and RON SIWEK. 133 !kALkADcAlLkJsDJJ!XJJLkAlLk!JLbQ LK!-ILKJJLKA LXARAIXAKALQALKAKAILAIXALKAKAKA DJJLKJ-l LXUJ LkUJlX..-4JlfL.llM!JLUJkALQlJlL.4llL4lLVA DLA-!lL.!4NALL!J ,,LkAlL..fUl2fS... ..
