And is is an essential B, for the Ritan prides itself in being as necessary to the ordinary Rita man as do the big city's important dailies. A position on the Bitan staff has often and by many been regarded as a thankless and dubious honor. Assignments are legion, work- ing hours often long, and details minute. Yet, no one who has ever entered the portals of St. Bita can recall anything but smiles on the faces of staff members on that happy day once a month when the completed projecteetheir pride and joy' -returns from the printer and is distributed by them through the classrooms. An Under New Management sign might well have been hung outside the Bitan Boom during the past year, as Fr. W. F. Labadie and Fr. l. Gavin succeeded Fr. Iohn Gaffney as moderators of the school paper. lnexperience characterized the first two or three issues, with the moderators themselves learniing many a lesson in editorial work from the staff members. Heading the list of editors was Ray Norton, take over man, who was always ready for an assignment and who represented the Hitan most often at the various conferences and meetings, social and educational, about Chi' cagoland. The assistant editors were seniors Dave Katnm, lim Dreyer and Bay Murphy. Dave cofninuolly supplied band information and was the dependable type who made the moderators worries fewer. lim, the dapper man about town, in several capacities, from photographer to authoring the notorious l-Tlotsam and letsamf' and brought a ready smile each afternoon after class into the Bitan Boom. Bay, handicapped by his editorship of the Cascian, served as Sports Editor, supplying sports information con- cerning St. Rita for the newspapers. No paper is complete without cartoons. The Bitan staff was convinced it had the best, with lohn Smatlak shifting this year to the religious cartoons and Vince Castellanet, the man with all the ideas and the ability to put them into effect, Newcomers Clem Warzecha and Roger Flyn ncame into their own toward the end of the year and have three years ahead of them. Tony l.oGeose wiled away his time before class one day by drawing on the blackboard. One of the moderators spotted his drawing and before long his cartoons were gracing the sports columns. The burden of supply the photographs for publication fell heavily upon the shoulders of Al Tripamer, who came through like a veteran. Freshman lim Strumil and Bill Blair tried their hand at sport photography, but the Bitan has to acknowledge Ed Cheles, class of '51 who gave generously of his time and donated the many wonderful basketball shots which ap- peared during the winter. The news staff of the paper had both ability and willingness. Senior Bill Lynch begged for assignments handled them well, and even janitored the Ritan room of clippings and debris. Walt Bruen, a Iohnny come lately, had the ability of an editor. lohn Bachochin, a soph, has the energy and willingness to run the paper some day. Big Iohn lclusar supplied much of the sport information and piloted the Flotsam through several issues. Matt Michaelson one day was sent upstairs to be iugged by a priest he didn't know. He accidentally went to the Bitan room, mistaking Fr. Labadie for the other priest, and before he left the room had been signed up. This Senior Silhouettes column is enjoyed by all. Fred Piechonka is the number one ad-getter and bill collector, while Greg Barrett and loe Kizior are in charge of distribution. Marty Walsh hardly missed a football or basketball game all year getting information for the sport page. Iim Brady capably filled Marty Knippen's shoes in the popular Out of Bounds column. Photography-wise the Bitan outdid itself this year, having more pictures in the first four issues than in the whole previous year. Another aim was to give the paper more to the boys themselves, with both pictures and articles dedicated to the students' fboth by them and about them. The Kand Once again, we are happy to report a season that was tops for the St. Bita Band . . . lt all started in the early part of August when the new, inexperienced, and eager freshmen were banded together to learn the ropes of the most active organization in the school. Two weeks later the upper classmen joined in and together they prepared for the Mardi Gras carnival at Biverview Park . . . Then came the long and eventful football season. ln victory or defeat the band stood out head over heels above the rest and left the crowds wide eyed and cheering . . . A return trip to Quincy College in Qctober left memories with all. The people once again opened their doors and made us feel at home . . . Columbus Day the Seniors beat the Iuniors 38-U in their annual gridiron tussel and the next month after Mass and Communion on Thanksgiving morning the Brasses delt the Beeds a l3-U licking in the Turkey Bowl . . . November 27-28 marked the first time in recent years that any of the band members earned positions in the All-State Band. This year four of our standouts, Dave Kamm, Vtfarren English, Gene Scaramella, and Bill Brewer, entered into the select circle of the top musicians of the state . . . Our dance band, the Swingsters, attained new heights and was in demand all year. They also supplied the music for the basketball games and socials: In the latter part of February they staged the first annual Swing Beviewu which gave the jazz lovers a real treat . . . K X Saturday night, December 19th, our gym was tarisfarmed into an ultra- modern ballroom when the Eighth Annual Band Ball toolc place. This affair has become the greatest social event on the St. Rita agenda. Putting the finishing touches to the gaily decorated gym was an enormous Christmas tree adorned with lights and tinsel. Above this was a huge revolving snow ball reflecting the gaity of the evening. lolly Old St. Nick was on his throne near the tree where he greeted all. Highlighting the evening was the choosing cf Miss Merry Christmas, a girl selected from those in attendance. She was then crowned with a beautiful floral crown and reigned over the proceedings. The Collegians' provided the music for this the best Band Ball yet. 107 'Yu :zinc :J Din in I , f A + s s -- f 5 ' in -me-F. Rather than have her sons avenge themselves on his murder, God took them by death at her request. She entered the Augustinian Convent at Cascia, where she remained until her death. She was canonized in 1900. St. Rita is our Patroness, and on her feast, May 22nd, we have special devotion to her and are showered with rainbows of roses from her throne in our chapel shrine. Since she is St. Rita ot Cascia, your Cascian strongly urges your lifelong dedication to her intercession. St. Rita is the Saint of the lmpossiblen and The Saint of Last Resort. 119 Ka 6641 bance Tire annual Pre Lenten Baseball Dance was lield in our gym, Saturday evening, February 29th. lalinny Lewis and Eiis erenestra were an hand to supply dance music for this gala affair.
