Qouxems wwf .H Father lV1cHale became Prior Provincial in 1950, and cele- brated his 25th year as a priest in 1951. He is an authority on education and administration. The Cascian wishes him many more moments of happiness and success in his admin- istration. K 2 Page 5 lv ihw. i ,, I Z 'rf'- .., ff 1-'A Page 7 Page 8 The class of T924 was small louT greaT. Fr. Doyle was graduaTed wiTh This class, wenT OUT and became a priesT, reTurned To ST. RiTa and is now Prior. IT's nice To have an old grad running The school, and we hope he keeps up The Tine, forward progress he is now making in The im- provemenT each year of The school in general. Fr. Fink came in l935. The school was small, insuH5cienT, and a whiTe elephanT Too. Now iTs among The biggest IT is also now a selT-supporT- ing proposiTion, which is more Than enough To ask of any insTiTuTion of learning. 405 4, -31,7 77 .fdclminififroc ion Like his predecessors, Father Cavanaugh has an education in educational procedures. And to say that he is a keen iudge of character is a laughable understatement. Fr. Coyne is a thorough teacher and an aggres- sive administrator. He has been here long and has served in many different capacities. Fr. Winn is our representative in the world of everyday commercial dealings. He gets things and he gets things done. Page 9 ,Siu Jeni 0lfU'l5Q 0l ff . . . On occasion, the student counsellor takes the role of disciplinarian. Fr. Crawford is well suited. He coaches our boxing teams, and they have won more than a few tourna- ment cups. But he is not an ogre, and he answers questions lust as well and freely as he gives unasked-for-instructions. Fr. Horne teaches business administration. He also means business when he spells Fr. Crawford in the duties of stu- dent counsellor. He's been assistant counsellor in Egan Hall for seven years. Fr. Thomas handles the tasks of co-counsellor in Green Hall in peaceful dignity, despite the often hectic character this position assumes. He is an all-around teacher and so is of double value to St. Rita. Page lO Always willing to be of assistance. That's Fr. Leo Cava- naugh. He was formerly a professor at St. Rita. He alter- nates with Fr. Thomas to keep order in Green Hall, and does a fine job, too. The TaculTy consisTs noT of good Teachers and bad, buf good Teachers and beTTer. They've learned Their subiecTs and They've learned hovv To Teach These subiecTs. The worlds of science, Technology, and academic sTudies are mapped 6LClfLfg... ouT, using The rules of reason and The near-rela- Tive of reason, religion. These three furnishings are enough to create the desired atmosphere. But whatever Catholic atmosphere there is, it is concentrated in the chapel. Here the student receives Communion, hears Mass, confesses his sins and listens to sermons slanted toward his needs. Fr. Gavin and Fr. Foley are this year's chap- lains. Among their various duties is the re- sponsibility ot directing the Sanctuary Society.' Page 19 1 V H B 1, Wk. if fff rf 'Sw fff-M ,M if 4 A Q ky? Basketball, tootball, and boxing were presented to the stu- dents tor their physical advancement. Page l59 NYXQ-.X 74 fm!! fame For The Seniors of T953 This is The lasT look. Such big shots as Tom 'Derby' Borzym and Al fTripod' Tri- pam fix the fights and mop up on the bookies. Clancy and Nicholas are pretty well matched. Clancy has a wicked scalp and his laces are well honed, and Nicholas has permanent scars to prove it. Nick himself has elbows hard as steel, and his thumb is the most educated one in the boxing world. But the fact that they keep alter- nately winning and losing their 1'e- turn matches is grounds for suspi- c-ion. COMMENT: None. There was a lot of Harding's decision to franchise from 88th Place. Jake Schiller writes: The reason Harding gave for his move was that he had found a bigger vacant lot on 88th Place. Thus he shows that he cares not a whit for the club's loyal fans, but worries only about his own financial position. Soft- ball can do without him. It was un- fortunate that once the team had to give him control when they had run out of money to get fresh softballsf' COMMENT: Baseball has become too maudlin an affair if people start to mourn the leaving of a bunch of fellows who know how to wave a stick. Witry's an- nual income for the year was suspi- ciously near the next highest tax bracket. The FBI decided to check up. They could pin nothing on him. That is, until they checked with the newsboy from whom Witry buys his daily paper. The newsboy, who gave his name as Joe Fitzgerald, said that Witry had shortchanged him a month before. I tried to get the nickel off him, but he was too stubborn. I didn't want to lose him as a customer, so I let it go. The nickel was reported on the tax form under incidental expenses. Of cou1'se this constituted fraud and tax evasion, for you see that nickel was all that was needed to put Witry in a higher bracket. In this way he avoided paying about 317,000 in taxes, said Jim Burke, representative of the legal branch of the Bureau of Internal Revenue. Charges will be brought against Witry at the next Federal court ses- sion. HIT AND RUN VICTIM UNIDENTIFIED Late this afternoon an unidentified man was se1'iously injured by a hit and run driver. Identification proved difficult, said Joseph Jadwick, city coroner, because my men were a little bit clumsy in scraping him off the telephone pole. Only object found in the man's pocket was a nickel. ARTIST'S EXHIBITION DRAWS BARBS FROM CRITICS The celebrated surrealist artist, John Francois Nizick, held an exhibit of his works last week in the Art Museum. Critics were puzzled at his paintings. Famous New York critic Richard Niedbalec said succinctly, The guy's a bum. Ray Derbas, noted photographer, said that the pic- tures showed poor composition: f'Take that green glob of stuff in the corner of this one, for instance. It would look better by the left antler of this three-eyed deer. His associate, Peter Stirbis, asked what was the picture supposed to represent, that looked like a burned negative. Nizick gave him an icy stare and answered: A chim- neysweep going home during a black- out. Business Personal: Frank Petran- costa is responsible for his debts only. When it was discovered that the city was flooded with counterfeit five, ten, and twenty and even some fifteen dollar bills, Ray Scoops Murphy was assigned to crack the case. Police chief Joe Sisko confessed that he was baliied by the cunning work of this syndicate. The chief further deduced that he thought that Bud Slippery Sloup and his side kick Bob Cee Cee Vollinger were at the bottom of every thing and that they headed the syndi- cate. Starting on his own Scoops called Northside 7777 and learned from Ed Squealer Drozed that the bills were being printed in an old abandoned house at 711 Ocean Drive. It was then learned that the house was owned by Jim Red Dog Kelly and Dick Monk Brennan. They were in cahoots with the syndicate. Scoops then notified chief Sisko who sent two of his best men Denny HDim- Witt Dine and Larry Toe Scannell to bring them in. When chief Sisko's men closed in the whole syndicate surrendered without a fight. Sloup and Vollinger along with Kelly and Brennan all were sentenced to twenty years in Fr. Crawford's jug class. Scoops Murphy received the reward of 31.75. RELIEF BILL ATTACKED ON SENATE FLOOR A bill proposing relief checks for unemployed jug ex-convicts was voted down because of a rider that set aside a fund for all politicians with the initials: J. D. Senator Jack Dillon, who defended the bill, said, I person- ally know a poor public servant with the initials J. D. who needs and de- serves every cent of that fund. Ray Lech, editor of the capital's largest newspaper, violently opposed the bill, because he thinks that the budget and taxes should be cut. Es- pecially the tax on newsprintf' said Lech. Governor Norbert Kosinski sat in on the session. When asked about the bill, he gave his usual keen summary of the situation No comment.' Attention Juniors: Used chemistry homework at nominal fee.
