ysafri PRESENTING THE 1963 REGENT St. Regis Falls Central School ■ FOREWORD ADVERTISEMENTS His life was gentle, and the elements So mixed in him, that Nature might stand up, And say to all the world, 'This was a man!’ SHAKESPEARE The 1963 edition of the Regent is the Senior Gift to the school. It is a record of our satisfactions, contributions, sorrows, and challenges. Our theme, Clouds, appropriately describes our entrance into our Senior Year. It was an ethereal attitude. There was something celes- tial about being a Senior. But as we matured and faced the demands that this year offered, we came to a more concrete and realistic atti- tude. ADMINISTRATION B The quality of mercy is not strained; It droppeth, as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath; it is twice bless'd — It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes. SHAKESPEARE i MR. CHARLES LaBOUNTY President MR. JAMES DONOVAN BOARD OF EDUCATION MR. ALBERT FARMER Vice-President MR. VENZO LANGDON MR. JOHN SHARPSTENE Vice-Principal MR. MAURICE FINNEGAN Superintendent Members of the Board of Education, Representing all areas of the school district, establish policy for our school, reflected in the system- atic efficient operation of an institution of learning. It is a difficult and essential phase of school life. Long hours, which often go unno- ticed, but for which we are deeply grateful, are spent in determining this policy. The Board of Education makes the most efficient use of the tax dollar in providing the instruments of education. This year under the leadership of our new superintendent, Mr. Maurice Finnegan, new services and equipment have been provided. Through the continuing ef- forts of these citizens who give unself- ishly of their time and effort, we look forward to even greater goals in educa- tion. MR. FLOYD ROCKHILL Clerk MR. PERCIVAL ROWELL MR. ELMER WAGNER MR. KENNETH S. JOHNSON MR. HARRY WAGAR FROM OUR PRINCIPAL It seems fitting that the Class of 1963 has looked upward and chosen out of the heavens its theme for its yearbook this year - CLOUDS. Thru the ages, men with the rare gift of imagery have contemplated the ever- changing formation and dissolution of clouds, and their colors and shapes have suggested to them thoughts which they have invested with great beauty. Longfellow saw The hooded clouds, like friars, ” Shakespeare once wrote, A cloud that's dragonish; a vapour sometimes like a bear or lion. Our earliest knowledge of man shows his interest in the heavens. Over 4, 000 years ago, when the Chal- daeans divided the stars into constellations, he began his attempts to unravel the mysteries they presented. A method of trigonometrical parallax was used to measure the distance of star-clouds before man had left the earth. Only 350 years ago men were burned at the stake for trying to advance the theory that the earth went around the sun. The years before the war were described by Sir Winston Churchill in his book, The Gathering Storm. It can be said many of you were born in stormy weather and you are to be graduated as we enter an age of direct exploration of space when men like Major Gagarin, Commander Shepard and others were to break thru the clouds and see that which was never before visible to man. Your future promises to be lived, in exciting times. My wishes for you at this time can be found in the popular song: May you find a silver lining back of every cloud you see” especially in the title of the song, May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You.” THE Mrs. Kerry, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Fisk Mrs. Hastings, Mrs. Benham, Mr. Sharpstene Assist in decorating Mrs. Besaw, Miss Lemieux, Mrs. Bailey Mrs. Harblin, Mrs. Coleman, Mrs Tavernier Assist Honor Society Aid in Talent Show Mr. Tessier, Miss Richards, Mr. Hennessy Miss Sullivan, Mrs. Hanley, Miss Russell Mrs. Lemieux, Dr. Benardot, Miss Smith Mrs. Spencer, Mr. Murphy, Mrs. Giffin Mr. Chiappinelli, Mrs. Slocum, Faculty at Luncheon Mrs. Johnson Mrs. Smith, Mr. Friedman, Mrs. Luhr Mrs. Bartlett, Mr. Lynch, Mrs. Viewer Mrs. Mendelsohn, Mr. Martin, Mrs. Boyea We listen to lecture Mrs smith At rehearsal We read THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT It has been the hope that each year in the REGENT, one department of the school could be featured. In 1959, the Health Department was given, prominence, in 1960, the. Home Economics Department, and now in 1963, the Eng- lish Department headed by Nelda Young Smith. Courses in English are an essential part of the curriculum of high school students. Use of language, correct speech, and writing are so basic and necessary to life that the stu- dent must pursue the study of English during every year in school. The various phases of English are indicated in the pictures. We read, write, listen to lectures and records, view film strips and movies, and dramatize. All of this is designed to improve our language skills, make us better listeners and thinkers, and prepare us for life outside of school. DEDICATION MR. EUGENE DANFORTH At Home For over a dozen years Mr. Eugene Danforth, fa- miliarly known as Coach tohis innumerable friends, has directed us in Physical Education classes, trained our teams and spent countless hours in service to our school. Outstanding in his nature are evenness of temper, a sincere interest in youth, and devotion to the de- velopment of character in those who come under his influence. For these unique qualities, we dedicate the 1963 edition of the Regent to Coach Danforth. Ready for class At basketball practice NON-TEACHING PERSONNEL High School people coming into the lunchroom and cafeteria helpers Bus Drivers Janitors The Cooks and their Helpers Let's get organized! What’s going on here? SENIOR PLAYS Two one-act plays, Take a Letter” and Forever Judy were presented by the Senior Class this year. The former presented an office scene in which an employer interviewed prospective secretaries. The later dealt with a typical teen-age girl and the problems she faced. The plays gave us an opportunity to demonstrate our dramatic ability. We did all of the things which play production necessitates, from building scenery to writing original parts. A profit of $70 added to our class funds and it proved to be a worthwhile experience. V Come out and be seen. Watch that sneeze! Is there sand in your eyes? You're not at all polite. Listen to me! Electing just a King and Queen had been the privilege of the student body until the Senior Class, in 1959, decided to establish a Senior Court from which the King, Queen, Prince and Princess would be chosen. At each prom since 1959, the court has been selected by the students. They chose six girls and six boys. The court forms an Honor Guard for the Queen, King, Prince and Princess in a very colorful ceremony. In 1961 and 1963, the court pictures were taken at the Crossroads in Moira. The next page includes pictures of the crowning of the Royalty since the court was instituted in 1959.
