I APPRECIATION AND RECOGNITION It is with great pride that we give RECOGNI- TION to Mrs. Beulah Durr and Mrs. Pearl Nelson who have given over 35 years of their lives to teaching. It is with great pride that we give them APPRECIATION for their great educational work and loving devotion to the many students who were influenced by their advice and understanding. It is with regret that We hear of their leaving and hope that both have a long and happy retirement. MRS. PEARL NELSON MRS. BEULAH DURR Everyone who has lived in Santa Clara thinks of the school and Mrs. Nelson simultaneously, for the school has been the hub of activity for the past twenty years that Mrs. Nelson has served. Previous to this, Mrs Nelson taught in the St. Regis Falls Central School. Mrs. Nelson as teacher and Prin- cipal awakened her students to the many joys de- rived from education. She will be keenly missed by students and parents. Mrs. Durr has lived and taught most of her life in St. Regis Falls. Of the 35 years she taught, 14 years were spent in schools in Utica and Long Is- land, 21 of thesehave been in the fourth grade of this school where she has been a constant inspira- tion to her students. She will be missed by the faculty and the entire student body who have held her in greatest affection and greatest esteem.

JOHN F. BYRNES Superintendent of Schools Due to his foresight the Co-opera- tive Board, one of the first in the state, was organized. HARRY W. WAGAR Principal Was instrumental in enlarging our school by annexing three rural schools. Beginning in 1855, two Hammond brothers made extensive purchases of timberlands in the vicinity, and in 1860, had a mill in operation and activity really began. Until this time, two or three hunters and trappers were the only inhabitants. The present town was shut in for miles on every side by forests and the only roads were trails. Other mills and factories, such as the mica plant, leather mill, and chair factory followed the Hammonds' lumber mill. Pictured at the left is one of these old mills, the chair factory.
