1860 saw the first school on St, Regis Falls soli. School was held in the back of a loghouse, the front of which wasoccupied by afamily. Mrs. Amy Saunders Sherfelt taught for $1 a week and board. In 1865, the first school on the Cook Road was built. Mr. M. A. Rowell, father of Percy Rowell, Manager of the Bank, taught school with one assistant from September 1886 to January 1887 in a building on the north end of the school lot. In 1889, 426 students were enrolled in school and it was found necessary to employ an additional teacher. In January, 1891, Regents Examinations were given for the first time. In 1907, Mrs. Mary Pritchard, who is remembered by so many, became the first Commercial teacher. The picture at the right was taken immediately after the fire which destroyed the Weller Building. The buildings in order as shown in the picture are the Methodist Parsonage, the Methodist Church, and the old school building.
