As 100 years have passed since St. Regis Falls was established, this 1957 Regent will celebrate the town's Centennial. We hope in a small way that this annual will be a permanent record of the history of St. Regis Falls. We have assembled together pictures and stories of familiar places in St. Regis Falls during the past 100 years. It is the sincere hope of the staff that this an- nual may bring you joy on some reminiscent night in the future. We thank all the faculty, students, and friends who helped to make this book possible. We owe special thanks to Mr. Penslien for his untiring help with the photography, and to the people who furnished us with pictures and information of the history of St. Regis Falls. We hope you will enjoy leafing through this 1957 Regent which we humbly present to you. I APPRECIATION AND RECOGNITION It is with great pride that we give RECOGNI- TION to Mrs. Beulah Durr and Mrs. Pearl Nelson who have given over 35 years of their lives to teaching. It is with great pride that we give them APPRECIATION for their great educational work and loving devotion to the many students who were influenced by their advice and understanding. It is with regret that We hear of their leaving and hope that both have a long and happy retirement. MRS. PEARL NELSON MRS. BEULAH DURR Everyone who has lived in Santa Clara thinks of the school and Mrs. Nelson simultaneously, for the school has been the hub of activity for the past twenty years that Mrs. Nelson has served. Previous to this, Mrs Nelson taught in the St. Regis Falls Central School. Mrs. Nelson as teacher and Prin- cipal awakened her students to the many joys de- rived from education. She will be keenly missed by students and parents. Mrs. Durr has lived and taught most of her life in St. Regis Falls. Of the 35 years she taught, 14 years were spent in schools in Utica and Long Is- land, 21 of thesehave been in the fourth grade of this school where she has been a constant inspira- tion to her students. She will be missed by the faculty and the entire student body who have held her in greatest affection and greatest esteem. CO-OPERATIVE BOARD JOHN F. BYRNES Superintendent of Schools Due to his foresight the Co-opera- tive Board, one of the first in the state, was organized. HARRY W. WAGAR Principal Was instrumental in enlarging our school by annexing three rural schools. Beginning in 1855, two Hammond brothers made extensive purchases of timberlands in the vicinity, and in 1860, had a mill in operation and activity really began. Until this time, two or three hunters and trappers were the only inhabitants. The present town was shut in for miles on every side by forests and the only roads were trails. Other mills and factories, such as the mica plant, leather mill, and chair factory followed the Hammonds' lumber mill. Pictured at the left is one of these old mills, the chair factory. The mill, whose output was 600 chairs a day, was destroyed by fire in 1909. Mr. J. Sharpstene Mr. H. Hollister, President Mr. V. Langdon, Vice President Mr. P. L. Rowell Mr. C. Bishop Mr. J. Donovan Mr. A. Farmer Mr F. C. Rockhill, Clerk Mr. G. M. DeLaire, Absent High in the mountains, yet in a valley so small, Lies St. Regis Falls, so loved by us all. Fresh air and sunshine surround our small town. We go skiing and skating the winters round. Our summers, so pleasing, to the beach we go, Or folks with fish poles up the river row. In our school, clubs and churches, pride we possess. In our hearts, our home town surpasses the rest. Memories of St. Regis Falls' hillsides, townspeople, and school will always remain dear to our hearts, no matter how far we may travel on life's journey. We will forget nothing. The town where we worked and played, suffered and rejoiced, will always be a part of us. TO OUR TOWN AND THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN IT, WE DEDICATE THIS 1957 REGENT. DEDIC i. k' Ms randpa Lemieux at 93 Cath Holiness Worship ATION «3 The village was incorporated on May 28, 1887. Mr. H. E. O’Neil was the first supervisor of the town and later became State Senator. The town officials also included a Town Clerk, Tax Collector, Commissioner of Highways, Assessor, Overseer of the Poor, Justice of the Peace, Con- stables, Sealer of Weights and Measures, and Excise Com- missioner. Town Meetings were well attended in the early days of the town and many heated arguments ensued. Dinners were held for voters who came from long distances. Bob Maroney has been the only Democrat elected to the office of Super- visor. A town jail was located on River Street. We hope to preserve in the pictures below a cross-sec- tion of the activities of our town. I m o olic M. School was held in the back of a loghouse, the front of which wasoccupied by afamily. Mrs. Amy Saunders Sherfelt taught for $1 a week and board. In 1865, the first school on the Cook Road was built. Mr. M. A. Rowell, father of Percy Rowell, Manager of the Bank, taught school with one assistant from September 1886 to January 1887 in a building on the north end of the school lot. In 1889, 426 students were enrolled in school and it was found necessary to employ an additional teacher. In January, 1891, Regents Examinations were given for the first time. In 1907, Mrs. Mary Pritchard, who is remembered by so many, became the first Commercial teacher. The picture at the right was taken immediately after the fire which destroyed the Weller Building. The buildings in order as shown in the picture are the Methodist Parsonage, the Methodist Church, and the old school building. RICHARD PRIOR ROSEMARY GLAZIER The original school burned in 1926 and was rebuilt in 1927. The picture at the left shows the laying of the cornerstone. An addition to this building was made on the South side of the present building in 1938. The school was centralized in 1926, after the old building burned, and Santa Clara, Dickinson Center, and Nicholville were annexed in 1953. Now over 500 fill the building and the faculty is made up of 22, plus 5 teachers from the co-op board. Atthistime, plans are being completed for an additional wing on the North side of the present building. Of the first graduating class in 1894, only Mr. W. Wardner of Saranac Lake survives. Overt Parks, Edith O'Neil MacDonald, and H. E. O'Neil were the other members of the class. 1957 marks the 50th anniversary of the class of 1907. Mr. John Blood was principal. Anabel Green, Myrtle Griffin of Cortland, and the late Earl N. Weller composed the class. CLASS HISTORY Any University September 1957 Dear Mom and Dad, Well, here I am sitting in my dorm thinking how much different this is than when I entered my Freshman year at high school. The gang is separated now; some in the service, some married, some working and some at other colleges. However, I will never forget those green, giggling Freshmen, including new students from Santa Clara and Dickinson Center, entering study and high school for the first time. To show off our new status as freshmen we elected class officers: Barry Barkley, President; Don Debuque, Vice President; Jane Ward, Secretary; Joan Besaw, Treasurer; Ronnie Leffler and Joan Besaw, Student Council; and Mr. Whiteside, Class Advisor. To prove what a talented class we were, we won a prize for the best window painting, at Halloween, but, our one and only money-making project was a bake sale which netted us $15! Our Sophomore year was uneventful, yet one spent swiftly and happily. We were only bid- ing our time. With Don Debuque, President; Jane Ward, Vice President; Diane Forkey, Secre- tary; Rosalie Susice, Treasurer; Marlene Martin and Barry Barkley on Student Council; and Mr. Sharpstene, Advisor, we proceeded to dig in to study. There were two outstanding Sophomore basketball players — Richard Prior and Barry Barkley; Janie Ward, as one of the Varsity Cheer- leaders, cheered our team to victory. Our Junior year was an exciting year for us. Gee! I don't think any of us realized how fast a year could go by. We organized quickly and elected Barry Barkley, President; Jane Ward, Vice President; Mar- lene Martin, Secretary; Richard, Treasurer; Rosalie and Donnie, Student Council; and Mrs. Mendelsohn, Advisor. Many of us joined the typing Band which put on an assembly program under the baton of Joanie Besaw. Our class started the year off with the first big dance of the season. This included the floor show for which the Junior classes are MOST famous. The whole class enjoyed making Christmas corsages and wreaths. What a wreath making night we had! Everyone had his fill of the half-raw hamburgers prepared by that great chef, Charles Rockhill. June came much too soon — yearbook planning with a supper meeting at Mrs. Mendelsohn's home was fun and successful. The Junior-Senior banquet held at Hotel Moira closed our year. Barry Barkley was the wonderful master of ceremonies. The girls had corsages and the boys boutonnieres made by the girls. September 1956 — we were seniors, busy with homework, tests, college entrance exams, and moneymaking projects. Don Debuque, President; Rosalie Susice and Barry Barkley, Student Council; Janie Ward, Vice President; Diane Forkey, Secretary; Marlene Martin, Treasurer and Miss Harvey, Advisor. Joan Besaw, after a strenuous campaign, was elected President of the Stu- dent Council. Boy, we were really a top-notch class excelling in many ways. The magazine campaign brought in a highest total of $311. 09. Our Miss Brooks brought in the top play re- ceipts of $87. 95. Never will I forget Joan Besaw as Miss Brooks; Richard as the coach; (ab-lib- bing throughout the entire play); Don Debuque with his English Accent; and Marlene M., as Jane, feeding the butterflies in her stomach. Marlene Martin, Joan Besaw, Rosalie Susice, Diane Forkey and Joan Besaw attended ESSPA Convention in Syracuse and brought home the All New York State rating for the SIREN for the second time, and a cup for the best Editorial Page, and also a cup for Pudgy Hathaway's silk screen cover. The various Vic dances were socially and financially successful through the year. The Hun- ter’s Ball netted $57. The big senior carnival added $356. The Junior-Senior banquet and the Senior Prom were successful. The Seniors added another first: we went to both Washington and New York on our Senior trip. What a wonderful and memorable time! After last minute cramming for regents (it was worth it) the crowning point of our career came -- Commencement night. What memories! Galusha as Noble Grand. The Order of the Eastern Stars No. 455 was organized in 1909 with Lena Wardner as Matron. The Social life of St. Regis Falls far the first 50 years of existence was centered in the home. At this time, St. Regis Falls was a health resort. During days of stage travel the Waverly House was filled to capac- ity. Mrs. R. T. Barnum of Barnum Circus fame, and friends spent several seasons at the Waverly House. Mr. Dennison Smith's farm in Dickinson was a favo- rite for many years. It was while there, that the Rus- sell family became attached to the country and bought the Cobbe lot. Santa Clara was a resort where Mr. Dimick had a house filled for several seasons. Board- row's accommodated 25-40 people in 1909. Fishing and hunting have always been favorite sports in this section. The Blue Mountain House of which D. J. Day was proprietor had many hunters and fishermen. Madawaska, Spring Cove, and Everton were favorites of city dwellers. Before the railroad they staged it from Rogers Station on the D. H. to Paul Smiths, Upper Saranac and etc. A line of six horse coaches met the train; they had breakfast at Ausable Forks, then through to Black Brook to Franklin Falls for din- ner, arriving at Saranac Lake for supper, thus passing a whole day.________________________________________ OUR TOWN-SOCIALLY In 1883 Father Normandeau brought about the incorporation of St. Regis Church of St. Regis Falls. Shortly afterward Father Ouellet located here and effected a new incorporation in 1883, under title of St. Anne's Church. Services were held at onetime in one of the hotels. The present church was com- pleted in 1884. The first recognition of St. Regis Falls as a par- ish by the Methodists was in 1882. Services were held in the lumber company's hall. In 1888 the new Methodist Church was ready for services. The par- sonage and Church were located on the south end of the present school site. When the school expanded, these buildings were moved to their present sites. The Baptist Church was organized on March 23, 1893. Services were held in J. W. Webb Hall. The cornerstone was laid in 1894 and it was finished in 1900. St. Regis Falls Universalist Church was formed in June, 1916. Services were held every alternate Sunday in LeMieux's Hall. Divinity students from SLU conducted services. Durkee Post, GAR. No. 504 was one of the first organized groups. SRF Lodge No. 100, LO. O.F. was started in 1886 with Honorable William H. Flack, Noble Grand and S. R. Gile, Vice Grand. Blue Mountain Lodge No. 874, F. A. M. was or- ganized June 29, 1909. Grades at Carnival Senior Carnival Eighth graders at tea OUR TOWN Mr. M. A. Rowell resigned from his teaching career in 1887 and started the first (and last) local newspaper. The Adirondack News. The first issue came forth at 10 P. M. on March 14, 1887. The paper closed down around 1929. The original lighting contract in the village called for 100 lamps at the cost of $800 in 1909. The street lights were on from dusk until one and then from five A. M. until daylight. The flat rate for everyone was $1. Now, in 1957, a new lighting contract has been signed. St. Regis Falls will have new street lights. The St. Regis Falls National Bank was chartered in May, 1905. W. T. and H. E. O’Neil, Alexander MacDonald, Frank S. Young, E. P. Tryon, and R. H. Burns constituted the Board of Directors. H. E. O'Neil was the first president. INDUSTRIALLY Hurd, Hotchkiss, and MacFarlane bought and enlarged lumber operations and opened a store. Other stores, barbershops and blacksmith shops soon opened for business. In 1883, an electric railroad made the town boom! A tannery, chair factory, mica factory, the Brooklyn Cooperage, and of course, lumbering were the most prosperous industries. The highest recorded population, 2,270, was in 1890. Now, mainly a residential area with a popu- lation of 1,064, most of the people are employed by Alcoa or on the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The Waverly House was built by W. T. O'Neil in 1884. This building still stands, although it has changed hands several times and has undergone several major changes and improvements. It is cur- rently owned by Mr. Fred Monnette. In 1898, H. E. O'Neil built a small dynamo in the Watson Page Lumber Co., which was originally the Hammond Mill, and he organized the St. Regis Light and Power Company. Needing enlargement, it was removed to the Chair Factory, located at the dynamo. When this burned, it was moved to Ploof Falls.
