Proves to be Successful The Lady Lions soccer team came on strong to take the top two spots in the recently formed high school Girls ' Soccer Club. The interest in playing was so great that the girls were divided into two teams— under 16 and under 19. These teams met only once, before a scheduled Varsity boys ' game. The little Lions shamed their elders by putting one goal more into the net. The girls were coached by Mr. Frank Jones and Mr. Dick Coley, both dedicated supporters of girls ' soccer. The girls were recognized and awards were given at the annual soccer banquet along with the boys. 87

Pius Soccer System The Junior Varsity Soccer team remained undefeated throughout the 1979 season, compiling a 4-0-2 record. Under the direction of Coach Richard Borst, the J.V., a feeder team to the Varsity, concentrated on such basic skills as kicking, trapping and heading the ball. They were also exposed to various offensive and defensive formations, and learned how to work together as a team. The Freshmen team, also coached by Mr. Borst, compiled a 3-1-1 record. During the course of the season, they defeated Marist, Collins and Woodward. Both J.V. and Freshmen spent many hours practicing together during the spring in order to prepare for next year. At lower left, Giff Gfroerer moves to reveive a pass from D ' Antonio Dixon. At upper right, D ' Antonio Dixon drills a shot towards the goals, while at lower right, Christ Turner heads the ball after an opponent ' s corner kick. 86
