SOCCER Goes to State! In the middle of a cold January, 26 young men and one coach began practice for what has turned out to be the winning-est team in St. Pius ' history. After defeating North Springs 3-1, the soccer team began to experience St. Pius Spirit, and went on to win against Collins, Woodward and Ridgeview. A region playoff game was played between Pius and Westminster to determine who whould advance to the state playoffs. After a grisley 80-minute game and 20 minutes of overtime, the game was still tied. St. Pius advanced on penalty kicks. Defeating Heritage in quarter finals and North Springs in semi finals, St. Pius advanced to the championship game. St. Pius suffered its first defeat at the feet of Southwest DeKalb, losing 3-1 and finished second in the state. On this page (top) Feargal Gallagher beats Southwest DeKalb to the ball while Dan Melvin shows the result of long hours of practicing headers. On the opposite page (middle left and right) All-State Dan Clavijo shows that skills and drills equal thrills, and Lance Clark takes a long throw-in, winning a goal, as John Raines watches. At bottom, Matt Beyer punches a sure goal against Southwest DeKalb in State Championship. 84

Pius Soccer System The Junior Varsity Soccer team remained undefeated throughout the 1979 season, compiling a 4-0-2 record. Under the direction of Coach Richard Borst, the J.V., a feeder team to the Varsity, concentrated on such basic skills as kicking, trapping and heading the ball. They were also exposed to various offensive and defensive formations, and learned how to work together as a team. The Freshmen team, also coached by Mr. Borst, compiled a 3-1-1 record. During the course of the season, they defeated Marist, Collins and Woodward. Both J.V. and Freshmen spent many hours practicing together during the spring in order to prepare for next year. At lower left, Giff Gfroerer moves to reveive a pass from D ' Antonio Dixon. At upper right, D ' Antonio Dixon drills a shot towards the goals, while at lower right, Christ Turner heads the ball after an opponent ' s corner kick. 86
