The 1978-1979 Boys ' Varsity Basketball team completed a fine season with several outstanding achievements. Closing the season with a 22-5 record, the best in St. Pius ' history, they were also Greater Atlanta Prep Classic champions and Subregion 4-AAA North champions. The team was also ranked third in DeKalb County and tenth in the State Final Poll. Along with these team honors, the boys compiled several individual honors. Coach Mark Kelly was named DeKalb County Coach of the Month. Seniors Tommy Mason, who led the team in scoring and rebounding, and Pee Wee Wyatt, who led the team in assists and steals, were both named to the Greated Atlanta Prep Classic All Tournament Team and the DeKalb and Atlanta Tip-Off Teams. Tommy (right), who holds the school scoring record with 38 points against Ridgeview, was also selected DeKalb Sprots Personality of the Month and Z-93 Player of the Week. Pee Wee was selected Atlanta Constitution Player of the Week and the Greater Atlanta Prep Classic Most Valuable Player. Both Tommy and Pee Wee, along with Junior Meredith, made the Atlanta Constitution Prep Honor Roll. Mike Goode was named to the DeKalb Scholastic Team of the Year.
