Lion Spirit Although this year ' s Varsity Football team came up on the short end of the win- loss column, its spirit and heart were unmatched. The season began with a 25- 6 thrashing of the Henry County War Hawks. Toby Hughes scored twice on runs of 10 and 15 yards. Mike Hunsucker scored on a 40-yard run and threw a 21- yard pass to Ron Logan who was injured later in the game and was out for half the season. The Lions then traveled home to face the Woodward Academy War Eagles. Mistakes plagued St. Pius as Woodward came out on top, 20-6. Jim Warren scored the Lions ' only touchdown on a 15-yard run. During the game, another serious injury hit the team as Tom Love was lost for the entire season due to a knee injury. The Lovett Lions proved to be too much to handle, as the injury-riddled Golden Lions lost the next game 30-0. Against the highly regarded and state- ranked North Springs Spartans, the Lions played a tough game, but costly mistakes gave the Spartans a 20-7 victory. The annual Fish Bowl took place the very next week as St. Pius hosted arch- rival Marist. It was a bitterly contested game, with the larger Marist team Continued on page 70. Varsity-continued from page 68. finally wearing down the determined Lions 14-0. The homecoming game was a thriller. Trailing 14-0 into the fourth quarter, St. Pius managed to pull out a 14-14 tie in the last seconds of the game against Ridgeview. Mike Hunsucker showed signs of greatness as he led his team on two long drives to tie the score. During the next game, this time against the Roswell Hornets, the Lions failed to take advantage of several opportunities to score, and lost 24-13. Scores in this game came on a one-yard run by Lance Clark and a 21-yard pass from Mike Hunsucker to Ron Logan. The Lion ' s next opponent, West- minster proved to be too strong, Westminster capitalized on errors to beat St. Pius 34-19. The Lions closed out their season with a tremendous victory over Riverwood. The Lions rolled up almost 300 yards total offense, with Dan Melvin and Phil Bentley catching touchdown passes of thirteen and eight yards. Toby Hughes scored on a run of 18 yards. Througout the whole season, the Lions displayed great determination and poise, and despite their final record had a fine year.
