A.V.A. is a city-wide organization, affiliated with Samuel Jones Boys ' Club, whose purpose is to aid children in learning. This year, St. Pius worked as the school coordinator for all Atlanta area A.V.A. participants. A.V.A. is designed to help children ages 8 to 12 from Atlanta schools. The program, which lasts from October to April, consists of one-to-one tutoring every Thursday. The tutors plan thier own lessons and teach the basics of math, spelling and reading. On facing page (top), are moderator, Mrs. Martha Alexander, tutors and children; at bottom left tutors Kathleen Ward, Vicky Dorsey and Patsy Ward plan lessons; at bottom right moderator Mrs. Kathy Woods explains the system to new tutor Karen Rennell. Band and Chorus Make The St. Pius marching band was under the direction of Mr. Albert Nemeth. This year the band showed noted improvement with membership growing. The chorus, in its first year conducted by Mr. Skip Williams, did well in its first showing at the chorus festival Choruses from various schools performed and were juded on their present- ations. The St. Pius chorus received marks of excellence. 58
