Under the direction of Mr. Augustine Dunn, the presentation included scenes from Our Town written by Thornton Wilder, and Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. Also, a few little- known works by authors Tennessee Williams, Mark Twain, Jules Fiefer and Langston Hughes were staged. One change brought about by the production was the conversion of the stage. The thrust style stage was used, with two half oval shaped ramps on each side of four different levels extending from the front of the stage out into the audience. According to Mr. Dunn, this type of stage brings forth intimacy between the actors and the audience. Also, the actors can become more versatile. ACTS OF INTERESTS A long month of hard work and practice resulted in three short, spectacular nights of Talent Show ' 79. The show opened each night to a packed Pius cafeteria, the third night ending in awards to outstanding acts. First place went to Anvil, a four-piece band led by alumnus Kurt Hansen and singer Renee Frechette. Second place went, for the second year, to Mike Bergmann and John Greybull for their pickin ' and strummin ' . Third place was given to Rotunda, a new band including John Laughrey, John Timme, Mike Mohr, Tony Yetman, Mike Bergman, Matthew Felderworth, Tony Guzzo and Robert Lind. 31 The Entertainer Under the direction of Lorraine Scarrazo and Bill Tweed, the Class of 1980 really pulled together to present a colorful and skillful cabaret. The theme, The Entertainer, was carried througout the show with a saloon background complete with Junior can-can girls and cowboys. The show was emceed by Senior Tony Yetman who will be remembered by his not funny joke jokes, and Junior Mary Schmidt who dressed in tails and a top hat. The result was two hours of music and laughter that entertained its audience through the final act. On facing page, versatile Tony Yetman displays one of his many talents; we let Sophomore Rose Whalen entertain us; and saloon dancer Janice Flam and piano man Mike Mohr demonstrate Senior talent. Classes competed in softball, soccer, field and mind events, to name a few. The Junior class was this year ' s champion, earning a space on the field day trophy. Seniors were second, Sophomores third and Freshmen fourth. At right, superstar Robbie White and stylistic Gina Piacentini hit and pitch. Mike Montross shows his soccer skill; Eliott Myers concentrates on the game ; and Kathy Goode earns points for the class. 35 Days of Art End in The second annual Arts Festival was a week of fun and activity both during and after school hours. The festival was planned and carried out by Mr. Augustine Dunn and Miss Pat Kerner, with lots of help from the students. Picture-taking, gl ass-blowing, face-painting and helium-eating were prevalent on the breezeway during lunchtimes. Even rain couldn ' t daunt festival spirits! After-hours special programs were planned for the community ' s cultural enjoyement. The library was the background for an orchestra presentation; and dramatic readings from Ragnoroc, which came out during the week, were held in the cafeteria. Culture had come to St. Pius! 36 Nights in White Satin A Little Night Music hit the Sheraton-Atlanta Hotel on May 12 as the annual junior-senior prom topped off festival week. The two classes worked together on preparation and band location selection. Ruckus played for the over 200 people who attended. The seniors walked into their class song, Last Dance, while the juniors danced to Nights in White Satin. The high attendance insured that the traditional prom will continue in the coming years. Honors and Awards In years past, honors day activities have grown so long that this year ' s program was broken into two assemblies. The first assembly was held May 8, and honored club members and leaders. Awards were given to A.V.A. members, Golden Echoes and Golden Lines editors, and band members, to name a few. The Carter L. Stout award went to senior class president, Anna Manarin. The second assembly awarded excellence in academics. It was held May 25. The seniors and department heads arrived dressed in caps and gowns. Students were honored for excellence and improvement, and two retiring teachers, Sister Mary Frances Duffy and Mr. Albert Nemeth, were recognized for their contributions. Freshman Mary Mizelle was awarded the Betty Patrick Scholarship. Lisa Volmer received the new Home and School Sophomore Award. Juniors Chris Benjamin and Mary Schmitt received the Harvard and Holy Cross Book Awards. Anna Manarin was awarded the Journal Cup, and seniors Laura Ward and Ron Logan were distinguished with the Christian Living Award. 38 Steal the Show 39 Last Flings, Class Rings, The traditional Baccalaureate Mass was held May 24 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. The Rev. Terry Young presided, and the Rev. William Seli gave the homily. The Mass was planned by a committee of students and teachers who chose Enlighten Our Eyes to See the Future as the theme for the celebration. Such symbols as the lighting of individual candles and the renewal of baptismal vows made the ceremony beautiful and meaningful. It was followed by the senior night dinner — planned and prepared for the graudates by the junior class. The dinner was followed by gift-giving to special teachers and entertainment by members of the class. We are the light of the world, read the cake and ran the theme for the dinner. and Things On May 28 the Class of 1980 officially became seniors as they recieved their school rings. The Ring Mass was also planned by a student-teacher committee and celebrated by both Father Young and Father Younger. The entire school community attended, and parents were invited. The day that followed found new ring recipients trying to get their rings turned by underclassmen the traditional 80 times before the week was over. They were, as their Mass theme said, Lords of the Rings. 41 Journeys Ended Journeys Begun The class of 1979 graduated on May 25 from St. Pius X High School. The ceremony was held in the school activities center. Archbishop Thomas Donnellan presided, aided by Sister Valentina Sheridan and the Rev. Terry Young. Graduates Meghan O ' Neil and Felix Gerdes gave the valedictory and salutatory addresses. Judge Keegan Federal was the guest speaker for the ceremony. Margie Cashin and Robert Klant recieved the Archbishop ' s award for being the girl and boy with the highest grade point averages in four years. The formal ceremony was distributed only once when the final graduate recieved his diploma and the entire class cheered and waved their prizes in the air. The season began with a 25- 6 thrashing of the Henry County War Hawks. Toby Hughes scored twice on runs of 10 and 15 yards. Mike Hunsucker scored on a 40-yard run and threw a 21- yard pass to Ron Logan who was injured later in the game and was out for half the season. The Lions then traveled home to face the Woodward Academy War Eagles. Mistakes plagued St. Pius as Woodward came out on top, 20-6. Jim Warren scored the Lions ' only touchdown on a 15-yard run. During the game, another serious injury hit the team as Tom Love was lost for the entire season due to a knee injury. The Lovett Lions proved to be too much to handle, as the injury-riddled Golden Lions lost the next game 30-0. Against the highly regarded and state- ranked North Springs Spartans, the Lions played a tough game, but costly mistakes gave the Spartans a 20-7 victory. This is the third best record in St. Pius ' history. The Lions were also named DeKalb County Team of the Week, and after beating a tough Shamrock team 68-52 were ranked eighth in DeKalb County. The success of the girls was due to their togetherness and team play, as well as their diversified talent. Junior Joanie Reardon, high scorer for the season, was also named to the Greater Atlanta Prep Classic All Tournament team along with Melanie Crelia and Mary Angelich. In the middle of a cold January, 26 young men and one coach began practice for what has turned out to be the winning-est team in St. Pius ' history. After defeating North Springs 3-1, the soccer team began to experience St. Pius Spirit, and went on to win against Collins, Woodward and Ridgeview. A region playoff game was played between Pius and Westminster to determine who whould advance to the state playoffs. After a grisley 80-minute game and 20 minutes of overtime, the game was still tied. St. Pius advanced on penalty kicks. Defeating Heritage in quarter finals and North Springs in semi finals, St. Pius advanced to the championship game. St. Pius suffered its first defeat at the feet of Southwest DeKalb, losing 3-1 and finished second in the state. On this page (top) Feargal Gallagher beats Southwest DeKalb to the ball while Dan Melvin shows the result of long hours of practicing headers. Under the direction of Coach Richard Borst, the J.V., a feeder team to the Varsity, concentrated on such basic skills as kicking, trapping and heading the ball. They were also exposed to various offensive and defensive formations, and learned how to work together as a team. The Freshmen team, also coached by Mr. Borst, compiled a 3-1-1 record. During the course of the season, they defeated Marist, Collins and Woodward. Both J.V. and Freshmen spent many hours practicing together during the spring in order to prepare for next year. The interest in playing was so great that the girls were divided into two teams— under 16 and under 19. These teams met only once, before a scheduled Varsity boys ' game. The little Lions shamed their elders by putting one goal more into the net. The girls were coached by Mr. Frank Jones and Mr. Dick Coley, both dedicated supporters of girls ' soccer. The girls were recognized and awards were given at the annual soccer banquet along with the boys. 87 Runners Make Tracks Boys ' Track team members are (back) Coach George Sattelle, B. Ollinger, M. ' Hampered by lack of a home field for practice and games and lack of student support, the 1979 Varsity Baseball team managed to improve its record to 5-13-1, but failed to live up to its potential. The team ' s first game was a 4-2 win over North Fulton. Pitcher Tracy Dempsey and outfielders Keith Maloof and Brian Connors led the defensive effort. Henry Vasquez and Jason Fragapayne led the offense with one homerun each. The second game of the year was an 8-0 loss to Redan. It was marred by mistakes and lack of pitching and hitting. These two games exemplified the inconsistent season which followed. The highlight of the season was the 8-0 victory over Pace Academy. Despite this year ' s probelms, Coach Willie Smith and a returning nucleus are optimistic and looking forward to a more fulfilling season next year.
