The Sodalists love and honor Mary, our heavenly Mother, and try to imitate her virtues by word and deed. St. Philip students are afforded the opportunity of humbly paying their homage to Mary, the Mother of God, on the third Sunday of each month. On that day, led by the Prefecr of the Sodality, they march in procession to the Church, where they attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and receive Holy Communion in a body. In a more material way, they show their love for their Heavenly Queen through the activities of the various Sodality committees. 1 3 ifliif W., Y Left to Right: Sally 4 Meadeg Pat Kerry Ger- ffvlgfw trude Olmsteadg james R, Gallowayg Russell Kit- telton, 1PrefecrJg Bar- bara Chubinskig Joseph Powellg Sally K i n g' Jack McSherry. .fdlkdhca Athlttrts should lx an znttgrdl pqrt of tht lllgll sthool turrrtulurn htt lust hoys lrt thus tuwht fur pl ty and hovy to fllllllx 1nd fltt lor thtmstlyts Our tht past tyytnty ytlrs Arntrlm h is lvtcomt 1 nttron of SIIICTS lnsttad ol turunv on ln txttnslyt tthlttlc protgrrlm IU Arntrltx yyt trc mort ind mort hctornrnu 1 nltron of xytllx ings About ont thnd ol tht mtn stltcttd for tht draft yytrt thystt 1lly unht Ihls rs tht tmmplt by yyhnth xyt should proht Gtrm tny Qlthoutgh 1 dtfmtcd yt trs htfort tht yy If sht tr untd htr young mtn to dutlop thtrr bodtes lxtry hrgsh school ln tht Unltcd States should ind must haw in athlctrt wrourim oys should ht IlL1Ql'lf to tftlst Cart of thtmstlyts ln ucry xx xy lux ptoplt 111 Amtrltt rt xlrrt tht rmportanct of in tduc mon yyhrch rncludcs hoth tht mtntrl md tht yhysrttl If young rntn art ttught to dtftnd ftnd htndlt thtmsclyts rn school thty mll become httttr trtnztns Amcrrm has no plttt for yymlsllngs Thcrtfort 1n tlosrng I vllsh to appeal to tht young mtn of Amerrca to dtytlop thcmstlyts rnto hnt find strong Cmztns through sports lk 11 I mm Ludwa 4 2 O A ' -A K- . The game was scoreless the first half, but in the second half St. Philip needed only six plays to score, with Fleece's 40-yard run the deciding factor. Although playing with a badly infected arm, Stan Fleece was the big thorn in the side of the Irish, He scored all of St. Philip's points, six on a plunge into the line and then adding the extra point on a perfect placement. ORT HOXIE 46 G. HENRY J. Mc SHERRY ST. PHILIP 7 O 7 O 14 IOl7IOl.l... LANSING - ST. MARY If ever there was an exciting game of football, this was it. Although outweighed, the Tigers showed -that they were not to be outplayed, when they forged ahead in the first quarter on Hoxie's touchdown. Fleece plunged across for the extra poin-t. However, St. Mary's likewise scored in the second quarter to make the halftime score 7-7. In the third quarter, St. Philip again forged ahead on Fleece's touchdown. Tom Conroy caught a pass for what proved to be the winning point. Tiger fans were somewhat dismayed when the Big Reds scored midway in the last period, but spirits again rose when their extra point attempt was no good. Fleece and Hoxie bore the brunt of the attack while Center jim Weide- man, Tackle Powell, and Guard Burgie were outstanding on B. UDWA defense. St. Philip's Tigers proved that they were really champions when they beat St. Augustine in the title deciding game, thirteen to two. In the second period Ort Hoxie broke away for what appeared to be a forty-yard touchdown run. The officials, however, ruled that he had stepped out of bounds at the fifteen yard line. This, however, did not stop the Tigers, as Hoxie scored from the seven yard line two plays later. Midway in the third period, Hoxie again scored. This time Fleece added the extra point on a plunge. St. Augustine scored their only two points late in the game on a blocked punt. The oEensive stars of the game were Ort Hoxie and Stan Fleece. The major factor in St. Philip's victory was its line, sparked by Center Weideman, Guard Burgie, and Tackle Powell. ST. PHILIP O O O 2 2 'O'6l7'O'13 f T. CCNROY KALAMAZOO - ST. Heading the scoring parade of the Tigers were Stan Fleece and Dick Haan who each scored twice. Ort Hoxie, jack McSherry and Joe Powell added a touchdown apiece. Bellevue gained their seven points late in the fourth period on a pass to Van Geison, their pass-catching end, who also added the extra point. The squad was led by Captain Ort Hoxie, a three year letter man, and Tom Conroy, a veteran of one year. Heavily counted on to provide the necessary winning spark were reserves, jack McSherry, Stan Keagle, Stan Fleece, and Rex Holloway. Dec. 12-Battle Creek, Central 40g St. Philip 11 Lackingksomeone tall enough,to stop lanky Bob Bradley, St. Philip fell victim to the smooth working Bearcat five. Although putting up a game fight the Tigers were simply outclassed by the class A Central team. Mainstay of the Tiger attack was Ort Hoxie who was aided by Stan Fleece and Tom Conroy. jan. 4-jackson, St. Mary 415 St. Philip 32 After losing its two stars, Capt. Ort Hoxie and Stan Fleece on fouls, St. Philip's was beaten in the last minutes by St. 'Mary's. The Tigers were so weakened by loss of these two veterans that they were unable to continue the game fight they had put up in the first stages of the game. Guard Rex Holloway was high point man with nine points which included seven free -throws. Jan. 8-Lakeview 31g St. Philip 38 Scoring sixteen points in a big fourth period St. Philip defeated Lakeview thirty-eight to thirty-one. Although trailing at one time 6-0, the Tigers displayed a marked superiority over the Spartans. In winning their first game of the season, the Tigers showed vast improvement over their first two starts. Scoring in the game was led by Capt. Hoxie with twelve and Holloway with ten points. Jan. 11-Kalamazoo, St. Augustine 295 St. Philip 23 After leading fourteen to nine at the half, St. Philip faded in the last half to lose twenty-nine to twenty-three. The loss of Capt. Hoxie on fouls in the last period was a deciding factor in the defeat. Big Stan Fleece was the scoring star of this contest with nine points. jan. 18-Ann Arbor, St. Thomas 30g St. Philip 32 Rex Holloway scored a long field goal as the final whistle blew to give the Tigers a hard earned but well deserved victory over St. Thomas. The game was closely contested throughout with St. Philip leading at the half 14-11. The main problem during the game was how to stop the Ann Arbor star, Murphy, who led the scoring with nineteen points. Scoring on the Tigers was evenly divided with Capt. Hoxie leading with eight points. jan. 22-Jackson, St. john 305 St. Philip '37 Outscoring their opponents 11-5 in the tinal period, St. Philip gained a decisive victory over St. john. Leading by only one point going into the last stanza, the Tigers completely outclassed jackson from then on to score -their second league victory of the year. Capt. Ort Hoxie again led Tiger scoring with 14 points on five field goals and four free throws. ellld jan. 25-Lansing, St. Mary 38g St. Philip 33 After trailing 25-14 at the half, St. Philip fought a great uphill battle in the last half before finally going down to defeat. St. Mary was sparked by her two stellar guards, Doll and Heddon, who counted 27 of their team's 38 points. The game was largely an offensive and defensive duel between these two and Capt. 'Hoxie and Holloway, who scored eleven and ten points, respectively. jan. 29-Lansing, Resurrection 29g St. Philip 27 St. Philip really lost a heart breaker when Resurrection scored a field goal in the final seconds of the game. After trailing 22-17 as the last period got under way the Tigers rallied to tie the score at 27 all before the game-winning basket. The loss of big Stan Fleece the week before because of a mouth injury somewhat weakened the Tigers. Stan Keagle led the scoring with nine points while Tom Conroy had seven. Feb. 1-jackson, St. Mary 355 St. Philip 45 St. Philip scored one of the season's biggest upsets when they handed the previously undefeated St. Mary squad their first defeat of the year. The victory atoned for an earlier defeat at the hands of St. Mary's. St. Philip grabbed an early lead and were never behind. Capt. Ort Hoxie led the scoring by counting 17 points but he was closely followed by Guard Rex Holloway who made 14. Feb. 5-Kalamazoo, St. Augustine 44g St. Philip 26 St. Augustine handed the Tigers their worst defeat of the year when they literally swarmed all over the Tigers, who seemed to be able to do nothing right. What little scoring punch the team showed was exhibited by Stan Keagle and Dick Haan, who scored eight and seven points, respectively. Feb. 8-Lakeview 24g St. Philip 22 After trailing most of the way Lakeview came from behind to defeat the Tigers in the last minutes of the game. St. Philip led 22-20 with less than a minute to go but were unable to hold this lead. The Tigers were led in scoring by Stan Keagle, who counted eight points. Feb. 12-Lansing, Resurrection 293 St. Philip 31 Coming from behind in the last quartet St. Philip's avenged their defeat by Lansing earlier in the season. The Tigers were trailing by one basket with three minutes to go, but two quick shots gave them the game. High point man for the night was Fox of Lansing, who scored 20 of his team's 29 points. Capt. Ort Hoxie led the Tigers with 12 points. Feb. 15-Ann Arbor, St. Thomas 433 St. Philip 45 Trailing by nine points St. Philip's, going into the fourth quarter, rallied to tie the game 43-43 when the final whistle blew.
