GR Y, HEAVIES, CALKINS, LIGHT TOPPED THE SCCDRERS St. Philip's senior team defending North Section Champs, started this season looking like sure repeaters. They finished in third place, however, with 3 vic- tories and two defeats. Their record, nevertheless. was very surprising, since the first six men on last year's squad were gone. But Coach Bill Shay taught them his pet system of throw- ing the ball into the center and cutting, and it clicked in the first 5 games. They lost the sixth and then split even in the second round, winning three and losing the same number. Earl Gray led the scorers with 98 points. The starting team included Gray, Murphy, Ziegenhorn, Sukola and Brown. Halloran, Di Benedetto and Callabrese were the chief reserves. Di Benedetto, Gray and Callalwrese form the nucleus of a very promising team next season. The wind-up games of the Catholic League found our Gael heavyweight basket- eers with a record of eight wines and four defeats. ln the inaugural game the Purple and Gold beat the lgnatians 31-27. The next game they took from the Dragons in a 26-24 thriller. The next was a runaway of 37-21 from St. lV1el's cadets and repeated against Weiner by the score of 48-28.
