OUR GRIDDER FINISHED I THIRD PLACE To the team 741 of St. Philipis-to those fellows who gave all they had for the honor and glory of the school-we pay tribute in these comparatively few words. The team itself had no high place in the Catholic League standings but its fine showing was a credit to the school. The team played as a powerful machine under the Purple and Gold colors. Throughout the season the team ,won only two, tied one and lost three. ln all games the team showed the determinism and sportsman like spirit that is typical of St. Philip's teams. lts keynotes of offense and defense were speed and deceptiong by these, the squad was able to give its opponents a real battle. We shall now consider the players and attempt to sum up their qualities as members of the team. At end positions the Gaels had Bill Morrissey, a fine blocker and clever offensive man. At the other end was jim O7Malley a speedy defense man. The first string tackle positions were held by Pat O'Brien and John Forbes. two strapping lads with plenty of punch and spirit. Walsh and Dugan played such a bang-up game at guard that the team was at a loss with- out them. Ralph Carroll held down the center position. The backfield was com- posed of Whalen. quarter-back. Coutoure and Aubin at halfs and Gambino at fullback. All these players and their qualities added up to a very competent team. 72
