X cry Rcvulc-l'oll1ehI.Depellcier M. I'rovim'iaI ol' Amer' Piox inci-oI'lI1c S1-rvantsol' lVIarv lx. Illlgll ffrcvier, 0.g.M. l onnmIer THEY GUIDED ST. PHILIP HIGH SCHOOL During the early part of the twentieth century. secondary education began to play an increasingly important part in human activity. The conditions brought about by rapidly growing industries, the specialization naturally resulting from increased use of mechanical inventions, and the demand for trained minds capable of coping with the new and complex problems in every line of endeavor made necessary a system of mental development more advanced that that of the primary and grammar grades. As a result, greater numbers of primary school graduates throughout the country matricu- lated in the high schools in order to obtain this mental training which had become so essential a factor in their success. The existent high school system became inadequate. It was necessary to provide greater facilities for the education of the American youth: accordingly, new buildings were erected, and old ones extended, added to, and remodeled. ln this program of educational expansion. the Catholic institutions of the country were not to be outdone by their secular competitors. lt was because of a feeling that the Catholic boys of Chicago should have an opportunity to acquire an advanced educa- tion at a convenient, centrally located high school, under the direction of competent. conscientious, and Christian teachers. that the Servite Fathers first formulated plans for such an institution in our parish. Too much credit cannot be given to Father Hugh Crevier, whose indefatigable energy. untiring perseverance, and courageous higzh-mind- edness were directly responsible for the establishment of St. li'hilip's High School. And to the Principals who followed: Fathers Maguire. Griffin. Bauman. Cortney. Keane and Wolfe do we owe our esteemed position among the high schools of this Archdiocese. Being real leaders, they carried on the principles of true Catholic Culture. Rev. B. Maguire. 05.31. Rev. A. Grifhn, O.S.M. Rev. A. Bauman, 0.S.fIl. Rf-v. A, Cortney. 05.31. Rev. J. Keane, OSJI. Hex.
