The high spot of this year was a gay sophomore picnic at which the three divisions united. As time progressed, we became juniors and reached our half-way mark. At this time we elected Don Baker, President; Margaret Japour and Betty Thomas, Vice- Presidents; Roberta Jones, Secretary; Marion White, Treasurer, and Esther Ulrich and Lawson B. Skidmore, advisors. The principal events during this year were the Junior Operetta, “Oh, Doctor,” the Junior Ballyhoo, Parents’ Night, and the Junior-Senior Banquet, at which our class feted the seniors with a dinner and dance. The high noon of our career was reached when at last we became seniors. The officers for this year were Don Baker, President; John Burroughs, Vice-President; Betty Thomas, Secretary; John Hornsby, Treasurer. The class this year presented a very successful play, “The Big Idea.” Other events were the senior picnic, the junior-senior prom, and tacky day. After completing the ceremonies of graduation, with happy memories of the past and confident hopes for the future, we are calling it a perfect day. Otis Ulm Virginia Batchelder President Vice President Mr. Wakefield Adviser Marion Brown Secretary Bernard Kehler Trensurer Mrs. Stewart Adviser Junior History T HE pendulum swung to the quarter hour as the awed and giddy Sophomores entered the portals of S. P. H. S. in “31”. “The Coocoo”, Ceals Yancey, announced to the doubting infants that they would have a barn dance, which was a gieat success. As another year is struck from the calendar by Father Time a few more wondering babes enter into a new experience. Once more the dazed children are astounded; they are to edit an edition of the Palmetto and Pine all by themselves, and all are anxious to work. Although carefully wound by the thoughtful hands of Miss Gertrude Day and Mr. W. S. Gay, the clock rapidly gains time. A picnic! all the water nymphs blow up their wings in readiness, everyone cooperates, and an excruciating time is had. As a last act toward the worshipped Seniors, the Sophs decorate at the Baccalaureate Sermon. After an elapse of three months the pendulum having reached half-past, the Juniors enter with a determined tread, looked around and decided to pick up some change by selling their chapel seats. The experience of last year’s humbleness and obedience to upperclassmen ranked in their hearts, so the Sophs are well taken care of. Another coocoo is selected to call the hours, Otis Ulm, and new hands to wind the clock, Mrs. Eleanor Stewart and Mr. Wakefield! All is confusion, out of which loomed “Tulip Time”, an excellent production which equalled the other operettas. Quiet reigned, but only for a short time, as the Juniors, following the tradition, entertain the Seniors with a prom. The Junior Edition of the 1 almetto and Pine was a triumph. As the pendulum swung, the Seniors were ready for graduation, and the Juniors decorated for the graduation exercises. Al¬ though anxious to push ahead into the Senior year, the Juniors hesitate, realizing that soon they will leave their Alma Mater. The amateurs are en¬ thusiastically welcomed by the long suffering Juniors and the ever-ready Seniors. The novices were immediately divided into three groups: A-G “set in motion” by Miss Tulane and “alarmed” by Bill Bond; Mr. Lewis “wound” the H-Q babes, and they were guided by Peter Meros; the “cookoo,” Jim Walton, aids the R-Z as they work under the leadership of Miss Brown. In the fall all of the clocks combined in a Hallowe ? en Dance. This dance was a “ringing” success (the Juniors and Seniors seemed to think so, too). Tick! tock! the Sophomores established a precedent; they ordered their rings which was a stagger¬ ing “chime to the upper-classmen.” Although seemingly inactive, the beginners planned their picnic. Many timepieces ran down due to salt water and “King Sol”. As a last honor to the departing Seniors the children decorated for the Baccalaureate Sermon. Looking always forward, the Sophs eagerly await the oncoming year. Seventy-five I M E will ?iot cha?ige you , you? ' spirit will never die ’ ■ ■ Football T HE DEVIL grid-men of 1932 were one of the best coached elevens in the State. With only six lettermen from the 1931 squad, Coaches Fred Stewart and George Trogdon turned out a team for which they deserve much credit. The Green-Devils, captained by Harry Apple, won five out of the eight scheduled games and finished third in the Big Ten Con¬ ference by the Dickinson system. Although they are not the state champions, they remained one of the leading contenders for the championship. Six of the eleven received all-state honors. Carr, Chauncy and Christian received first team berths; Apple and Burroughs, positions on the second team and Stam- baugh, honorable mention. Although there will be only a few veterans next year, we anticipate another good team and we extend our best wishes to Capt. Otis Ulm for a successful season in 1933. The graduating members of the varsity squad of 1932 include Capt. Harry Apple, Dick Horner, Floyd Christian, Bob Purvis, Alex Archibald, Joe Carr, Johnny Burroughs, John Hornsby, Bob Fowler, Vic Nelson, Frank Duhme, Jimmy Mansfield, Marvin Chancey, Dick Stambaugh, Alvis Green, Joe Palmer, Larry Semmens, and “Hammerhead” Herder. The remaining lettermen include: next year’s captain, Otis Ulm, Gene Templeton, Walter Atchison, Bill Strickland and Phil Conner. SCORES MR. Eighty-three Basketball The 1932-33 edition of the Green Devils basketball team brou ght S. P. H. S. its first state champions in cage title. With four of last year’s lettermen, a good supply of reserves, and two men new to our school, Coaches Fred Stewart and George Trog- don molded a team that finished at the top of both the District and State tournaments. The Devils placed three men on the all-state team. Co-Captains Floyd Christian and Alvis Green led the Devil cagemen through a disappointing schedule in the Big Five League, but, they led a perfect basketball machine into tournament play. They brought home the trophy from the West Coast Tournament for the seventh consecu¬ tive year, by defeating Venice Nokomis, Bradenton, Hillsboror and Plant High. Their victory made them eligible for the state meet where they defeated Graceville, Andrew Jackson, Orlando and Plant High to bring the state trophy to S. P. H. S. for the first time. Three of the Devil cagemen received all-state honors. Bob Taylor, a new-comer to St. Pete, was elected Captain of the All-State Five. Co-Captain Floyd Christian and Johnny Burroughs received well earned positions in this select five. We extend our congratulations to these three and the entire basketball squad which includes Co-Captain Alvis Green, Jimmy Mann, “Red’’ Kindell, Bill Lee, Johnny Smith, Jack Bushman and Ed O’Rielly for their brillant tournament play. Graduating lettermen are: Christian, Burroughs, Green, Mann, Lee and O’Rielly. By every man qualifying and scoring in twelve out of the thirteen events in which men were entered the track squad accumulated a score of twice that of their nearest opponent, Hillsboro High. Two state records were broken by local boys, the shot put by Apple and the high hurdles by Mann. Out of the three meets entered in the Green Devils won two. They lost in a dual meet with Hillsboro with a score of Hillsboro 61 2-3 points to St. Pete 60 2-3 points. Soon after this they more than avenged themselves by winning the meet between Hillsboro, Plant and St. Pete. The score was St. Pete 46; Plant High 23; and Hillsboro 19. We extend our congratulations to Coach Stewart and Co-Captains Joe Palmer and Marvin Chancey and the entire squad including: Stevenson, Apple, Burroughs, Boatman, Hornsby, Mills, Rowe, Ivey, Capt.-Elect Bob Fowler, Johnstone, Potts, Cantlin, Wright and Manager Harold White. Led by Captain Dick Robertson, who was high-point man of the meet, the boys’ team scored 39 points to take first place. Florida should produce many excellent swimmers and St. Petersburg is unusually well adapted for the sport. With the municipal bathing beach, the miles of gulf beaches, one salt water pool and several fresh water pools, young people of St. Petersburg have every chance to become good swimmers. They hope the pictures and writings in this book will be an album of happy days spent in S. P. H. S. Many hours compiling the material for this book have been spent by the staff. During that time they have bad anxious and bappy moments. As a result of all this they are proud.to present this, their finished product, to you. Keep it, cherish it as sincerely as those on the staff have worked on it. The book could not have been possible without the conscientous guidance of the editor-in-chief, Betty Jane Irons, the intelligent directing of the advisers, Miss Appleby and Miss Day, the splendid help of Miss King and the cooperation of every member of the staff. If you are pleased with the publication, the staff will feel amply rewarded for its hard work. Ordinarily, the gate receipts from football carry the whole athletic program. This year the proceeds were not even enough to finance basketball. However, Jack Harris, A1 Jones, Peggy Coll and Helen Rae Cusson contrived ways to make a little more money, to cut down expenses, and to instill some of their own pep and enthusiasm in the spirit of the students. Few of the audience realize the tedious practice and precise efficiency necessary in a stage crew for a smoothly moving play. In behalf of the school, the Annual staff wishes to express appreciation for the tireless efforts of these boys and girls. One Hundred Twenty-five Music Department ‘‘ Just start in to sing as you tackle a thing that cannot be done and you’ll do it.” S O closely has our music department been allied with the Carreno High School Club that, when the seventh state music festival for high school students was postponed, it greatly disappointed but did not prevent them from gaining the greater part of their year’s goal. Starting with music for football in October to commencement music in June, they have kept GERTRUDE COBB MILLER to and surpassed their record of former years. The first public appearance was for the teachers’ institute; since then they have furnished music for six P.-T. A. programs; entertained tourist societies; furnished quartets and string ensembles for church concerts; appeared several times on Carreno Club programs, and on February sixth gave a delightful concert at the Municipal Pier. At different times they have furnished music for chapel programs and on January thirteenth presented their annual Junior Operetta, “Tulip Time.” On March thirty-first a chorus of eighty-two music students assisted in the annual Festival of States pageant. On April first this department sent a thirty-four-piece orchestra and a girl’s glee club of twenty-eight to the Carreno High School Festival in Tampa. Eleven soloists went with this group, winning ten firsts and one second place. Our splendid music department proves that music and culture are boon companions. Two of the party, Ned and Dick, are much interested in Christina and her friend, Katinka. News reaches the village that a thief has been stealing choice bulbs of prize tulips, and a handbill describes the thief and offers a reward for his capture, Ned and Dick induce McSpindle to wear certain clothing, answering the description of the tulip thief. When the Burgomaster beholds Mc¬ Spindle so attired, he causes his arrest. With McSpindle out of the way, Ned and Dick promote their friendship with the girls, and learn that Christina’s stock is, un¬ known to her, of immense value. They reveal the truth to her and thwart the Burgo¬ master’s attempt to grow rich at her expense. With the assistance of Christina’s Aunt Anna, the innocence of McSpindle is established and the latter declares his affection for her, and with the prospect of a triple wedding the final curtain falls. One Hundred Twenty MISS JANET KING Art Department “In time all passes; art alone endures.” F ROM the first primary color wheel to the most difficult types of color com¬ position this department affords its students a never ending source of work and enjoyment. The work produced shows the competence of the instructress and the genuine talent of the young artists. When a play is staged, members of this department may be seen painting scenery, sizing new material and stenciling borders, all under the advice of Miss King. There are always students in this department willing to produce excellent posters to advertise any school activities. We are all indebted to this department for their cheerful and competent aid. This year the y have sent a highly creditable exhibition to all the junior high schools in this city and county. Every year they make two annual trips, one to the Ringling Art Museum in Sarasota; and the other to Tarpon Springs where they study the Inness paintings. The Art Staff of the No-So-We-Ea is composed entirely of members of this department. One Hundred Thirty ANNUAL ART STAFF Seated in front: James Buehwald; second row: Mary Blanchard, Charlotte Fergu¬ son, Miss Janet King, adviser, Janet Whitlock and Ruth Angus, art editor. Annual Art Staff A great deal of credit is due the Art Staff of the Annual. Each member has worked diligently and has proved himself worthy of the responsibility placed upon him. The editor, Ruth Angus, designed all the division pages in the book, in addition to making a number of snapshot pages. Mary Blanchard drew the entire front section, that is, the Ex Libris, the Title page, the Atmosphere page and the Dedication page. Janet Whitlock planned the Senior panels and the football and basketball panels. Charlotte Ferguson designed the last page in the hook as well as the Safety-Service Council page and the “S” Club panel. James Buehwald is responsible for the head and tail pieces which are carried throughout the book and much of the elaborate printing of each section. Miss King has given liberally of her time and adxice in spite of her other duties. Surely the 1933 A 1 o-So-We-Ea should he a lasting tribute to the talent of these students.
