Jule Victor Administration and Faculty Classes Associations F eatures - mmwm Ilsa: The front of the Administration Building, the main office of our college. From its institution nearly hthirty-efive years ago, a great transformation has taken place at St.Petersburg Junior College. Where onbe stood a solitary building, there is now one of the most beautiful junior college campuses. The Administra- tion Building is that single building that once marked the sitekof SPJC. One of the television classes in the auditorium. Looking down the main corridor. An art class in the Fine Arts Building. As St. Petersburg Junior College grows older, it is also becoming young and energetic. Modern buildings for the teaching of sciences and arts are taking their places on our cam- pus. This is St. Petersburg Junior College, nineteen hundred and sixty-two. Fine Arts Building. The chorus practicing in choral room. 1 www. - - awawwiw me v Hm The Language Arts Building. The Science Building and its observatory is the biggest attrac- tion of the campus as far as build- ings are concerned. People, and particularly students, come from miles around to view it. Classes are presented at night for adults, and astronomy classes are con- ducted at school. The Planetarium. ,k Students working in a chemistry lab in the Science Building. The Student Union Building, or the Sub, is probably the most popular place on campus, not only because of the good food, but because it is a place where the students can relax and meet their friends. On the other side of the student cafeteria is the faculty cafeteria. One advantage of our cafeteria is the handy snack bar and the plate-lunch counter. :IIV z .49il.'.l Students gathering in the lounge. Lunch line in the Sub. Another section of the Sub is the Student Lounge where informal study- ing can he done. Next to the lounge is the office of the Student Court where the Chief Justice and Al Iver- son have their headquarters. Student Union Building. Student Service Center. Student Government, the Troiad, and the Wooden Horse. Directly across the hall from these offices chase all of their supplies plus a number of other items such as shirts, scarves, and mementos. Student Government Office. Students shopping in the SPJC bookstore. Technical Building. Oneof the busiest buildings on campus is the Technical Building. It is among the newer build- ings, added in 1959. Many various courses are VQOnducted here, Lincluding business, electrical labs, and social sciences. A typing class in the Technical Building. Students working in an electrical lab. I2 Television Building. The Television Building is the latest addition to the campus. With it WEDU studios. has come WEDU, the educational television station, something of which we are very proud. Yes, St. Petersburg Junior College has progressed from a one building structure over-looking Eagle Lake to a beautiful campus to which some 4200 students have come this year. Chamberlain LEFT: hDoc explains a biologieal principle to one of his televiswn classes. , O I , Dedwatzon A man who has gained the friendship and admira. tion of a countless number of students is Dr. Joseph J. Chamberlain. As an instructor of the sciences, he has unselfishly given of his time and effort to further the education of his students. 50 to an outstanding instructor and a Wonderful friend, thod, Chamberlain, in appreciation for his innumerable hours of service, the 1962 TROIA'D is proudly dedicated, Dr. Chamberlain is shown with his wife and two children. hDod' Chamberlain combines business and pleasure on the trips he makes. 3r, ADM.T Imranmsmx t t e n n 6 B m. 6 mm 56 ma Phc M Best wishes to you as you pass another mile- post in your life. We watched you approach and finally appear within the scope of our influence. . 7 Now we, the faculty of St. Petersburg Junior PreSLdent S College, watch you travel on. We are proud to acknowledge you as ours. Our wish for you is continued success. Message We hope you gathered much knowledge while you were here. Merely to gather knowl- edge, however, is rather a useless accomplishment. We sincerely hope that you have learned better how to apply this knowledge to assuring for your- self and your fellow men an improved world for generations to come. Please remember that line in our Alma Mater which reads, lland friendships made, years will recall? Remember us. We will be delighted to see you on campus whenever you can find time to return for a visit. A familiar face to each student at St. Petersburg Junior College is that of Dr. Michael Bennett, President of the College. Not only is he the head of our college but he is a friend to each of us, faculty as well as students. As the sponsor of Student Government he gives many hours to helping the government of the college to func- tion properly and to the advantage of the students. Dr. Bennett received his Master of Arts degree and his Doctorate from Florida State University. 20 Superintendent Floyd T. Christian Congratulations on achieving this goal in your educational develop- ment. Our school board and community are proud of you and your a- chievements. We hope you are equally as proud to add your name to the list of fine students who have graduated from St. Petersburg Junior College. The South, and especially the State of Florida, is moving forward rapidly and vigorously. You have seen the results of this development on the cam- pus and in our cities, with many new buildings, new homes and new in- dustries. Whether you go on to full time employment or to further education, we hope you will make your future here with us. Whether you plan to be the homemaker or the breadwinner, we hope you will continue to train yourself and to educate yourself well and that you will make your place here with us in Pinellas County. We need your vital, enthusiastic strength and your developing leadership as we continue to build a great community and state. Best wishes for continuing success and happiness! M essage KENNETH G. Alumni Association The Alumni Association is a hard working organization of the graduates of St. Petersburg Junior College. Working especially closely with the Student Government this year, many things have been accomplished for the betterment of the col- lege. Their annual projects, the Christmas Dance and the May Picnic, were very popular and many new faces were seen. Much thanks to them for their countless hours of service to the college. MR. Sophomore Class Under the leadership of President George Khouri and his officers the sophomore class had a very successful year. Elections, both fall and spring, were the main ac- tivities of the class. More people came out and supported the elections than ever before, enabling needed amendments to be passed. The class helped the Freshman Class with Senior Day, also. All in all, the Sophomores at St. Petersburg Junior College will leave knowing that their years here were well spent, not only because of the knowledge acquired, but because of the lasting friendships made. F reshman Class As the freshmen worked their way through their first year at St. Petersburg Junior College, they began to realize the importance that their college was to play in their future lives. The year began with all freshmen and sophomores meeting each other at the annual Get Acquainted dance sponsored by the Student Government. During the first six weeks they elected their class officers, who guided them through the year. Ray worked with the Student Government which enabled him to give better information to the students. During second semester the Freshman Class sponsored Senior Day for the high school seniors, giving them a chance to see our college. This was attended by many interested and enthusiastic students who hope to make next yearis Freshman Class just as good as the Freshman Class of 1962. MICHAEL BENNETT Student Government Adviser The Student Government of St. Petersburg Junior College is a unique structure of student and faculty interaction designed to promote the best interests of the student body and the school itself. This year S.P.J.C.,s student government main- tained an active pace to achieve one of its most productive and worthwhile years. Student Governmentis initial task consisted of running the very important Fall orientation program, which they also dupli- cated on a smaller scale for the spring semester. Student leaders and faculty members co-operated in this effort in a series of instructive classes to help incoming Freshmen in addition to publishing the invaluable Trojan handbook. October was perhaps one of Councilis busiest months. They sent ten delegates to the Florida Student Government Con- vention in Brandenton establishing a closer connection between the many student governments of Florida. Fall elections took place during this month during which all previous voting records were set for this campus. In the latter part of the month Stu- dent Government members were willing to helpful assistants to Dr. and Mrs. Bennett at their annual faculty reception. Student Government Meetinv. L-R: John Streator, Religious Board Chairman; Larry Eskew, Scholastic Board Chairman; Gail Swift, Historian; Phil Gilbert, Chief Justice. Some new innovations also marked the work of the Student Government of S.P.J.C. this year. A much needed water fountain was provided outside by the athletic field. Patio furnishings were placed outside of the Sub to alleviate the crowded condi- tions inside and for the enjoyment of the students. The continuance of the landscaping of the quad- rangle was done by the council which resulted in true campus beauty. The establishment of t;Dead Week was an attempt to aid the students in prepa- ration for exams. L-R: Pat Price, ICB; Bill Irwin, Ments Athletic Chairman; Joan Buell, Womenk Athletic Chairman. L-R: John Gordon, Co-Editor Wooden Horse; Joan Kohne, Editor, Troiud; Julia Wilkinson,C0-Edilor,W00den Horse. l23 L-R: George Khouri, Sophomore Class President; Sherry Pickett, Otis Wragg, Sophomort- Councilman. Rise Stevens, Metropolitan Opera star, made an appearance on the J.C. campus thru the co- ordinated work of Student Government and the faculty in connection with Florida Presbyterian College. A revision of the Student Court system was another well-taken responsibility of Student Gov- ernment. For these activities and many others taken for granted such as publication of Student Directories and the operation of the lost and found, St. Peters- burg Junior College Student Government deserves a healthy vote of thanks for making this year one of great benefit for the students. L-R: Marcia Moore, Social Affairs Chairman; JoAlice Taylor, Public X Relations Chairman; Bev Peterson, School Improvement Chairman. L-R: Dan Ashlin, Deedee Dodson, Freshman Class Councilmen; Ray Huglin, Freshman Class President. l24 Chief J ustice: PHIL GILBERT Clerk of the Court: STEVE WATTS The Student Court, a phase of Stu- dent government, handles infractions of such regulations as campus parking. The purpose of the court is to function for the student body along with the student body. Student Court A reorganization of the constitution alleviated much of the pre- vious confusion and made policies of the court clearer to all con- cerned. With this reorganization came a different type of court procedure. A higher court and a lower court were formed, thus, dividing the cases as to their importance. Three new justices were elected along with a student prosecutor. This system assumed a great deal of responsibility which had formerly been delegated to a very few students. Adviser: MR. KOHLER ROW 1: Ray Klien, Sue Knisely, Jim Breslin, The Student Court runs on the basis of the students acting as jurers and prosecutors. It has the authority to hear and pass judge- ment on some cases pertaining to misconduct, traffic Violations, and violations of honesty in academic work on the part of the students attending St. Petersburg Junior College. In keeping with its fine record, the Student Court has done an outstanding job in main- taining law and order on the campus of Saint Petersburg Junior College. Obelisk The Obelisk, the college literary magazine, is an outlet for students to contribute in the area of original expres- sion. This may include: short stories, poetry, cartoons, or jokes. Illustrations for stories are done by the students themselves. These student works are published during second semester and distributed to all students. An innovation this year was the addition of an Editorial Service, composed of four sophomores, who read the contributions and suggest ways in which they can be improved.
