Since then we have met loyal friends and invaluable teachers who have aided us both social- ly and intellectually. We have learned to meet failure and discouragement and have been taught the golden lesson of fellowship. Now commencement is calling and the doors of the future are opening to us. We will meet the challenge that lies before us with an undaunted spirit and with the strength of a thousand Trojans. Our prepa- ration has been made well, and although each of us will go our separate ways, none will forget our college days at Utopia Tech. f IDPQOSEHJCS CLHSQWUF '55 SI PETERSBURG JUNIOR COLLEGE 7 N...' BENNETT President our presidenf This year the halls of Utopia Tech did not resound with his footsteps nor did the as- sembly hall fill with his voice. Our Presi- dent MICHAEL M. BENNETT, was absent from his office desk at Junior College and instead was sitting in the place of a student at Florida State University where he was working toward his Doctors Degree in Edu- cation. We have truly missed his warm smile and hearty laugh, but will remember him always as both an educator and a friend. administrative assistant CHARLES O. SMOUT This year, Mr. Charles 0. Smout gave up his duties as registrar, to take over a greater task, that of Administrative Assistant, during the absence of our President, Michael Bennett. Though he has assumed an added responsibility, he has still found time to give counsel to our problems and lend us a helping hand whenever we needed it. CHRISTIAN Since we are living in an age of expanding educational opportunities, when more and more people are going to high school and college, it is only natural that our own Junior College should be growing rapidly. As I look into the future for your Alma Mater, I feel sure that the next five years will find it making great strides in every way. This year you have the largest enrollment in the history of the college and no doubt this is only the beginning. ' To the members of the graduating class of 1955 we express our sincere desire that the future may be full of happiness and success. May you go on to seek the goal that you have in life and do it with confidence and ease. It is hoped that your education and training up through the completion of Junior College has given you a back- ground of learning, culture, and tolerance that will aid you in all your future ac- complishments. Our very best wishes go with you as you enter the threshold of senior college, pro- fessional school, or the business world. Xlf Left to right: Ann Strickland, Secretary-Treasurerg Jay Rowen, Presidentg Joanne Bolton, Vice President. Scared but eager, we entered ,lunior College for the first time on September 2nd, and immediately were besieged with more homework than we had had all of our Senior year. We thought we would never get through the first six Weeks but finally came the day of reckoning - grades - and most of us found that it wasn't so had after all. ln October we held elections and when the tally had been taken, ,lay Rowen, Joanne Bolton, and Ann Strickland emerged victorious as President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer. JoAnn Smith was appointed next yearis Election Chairman. Our class projects, an entertainment troup that toured the hospitals and homes, and the Spring Picnic were both very successful, owing to the splendid co-operation of the entire class and backing of our Ways and Means Committee. Now that our Freshman year is over, we look back with fond memories of the won- derful times we had, and forward to the great thing which lies ahead for us as Sopho- mores at Utopia Tech. As a class of bewildered freshmen we were ushered into the helpful and encouraging hands of the conscientious faculty and friendly sophomores who were more than willing to make our stay at J. C. a profitable and enjoyable venture. Our work was cut out for us, but we somehow found time for those gay parties, picnics and dances which were given by the clubs and the school to make us feel at home. Our first job as a class was to elect officers, Jack Turner being elected President, Bob Jones, Vice President, and Virginia Browning getting the nod for Secretary-Treas urer. Our first project was a Freshman Talent Assembly. Next we went all out for a square dance, the 4'Hick Hopf' which was planned and executed by our very en- thusiastic Ways and Means Committee. By that time we had seen semester grades - and were bidding farewell to those who found the going too rough for one reason or another. In the spring we gave a picnic for the departing sophomores, and elected officers for the next year. Jack Turner repeated as Presidentfand in a like manner, Bob Jones for Vice President. June Grant was elected Secretary-Treasurer. We planned early for the big job of orienting new students, with June and Jack revising the Student Handbook for their benefit. Orientation included a picnic for the freshmen and to add to the fun our class had a skating party. January saw an- other talent assembly and February another square dance on the calendar of events. We are proud of the talents and abilities which each of our classmates has displayed here at Utopia Tech, but we are quite sure that our class history isn't over. I had seen before on the faces of other student nurses the look of pride that each of the forty seven uprobies wore above their new uniforms, but new to me were the experiences that they told me about throughout their first months of training - the 'cget acquainted parties with Junior College, the program in which they displayed to the student body the fine arts of holding lollipops and rendering forth with blue notes, and the skill with which they used bandage scissors to cut snowflakes for the Sunshine Snow Stormf, The lure of real snow took many of the class members away from school during Christmas vacationg even the local Floridans deserted the lab for a week of floor duty in the hospital. The new year brought with it an air of expectancy as the pre-clinicals neared their goal - capping! Early in March they realized the highlight of their training as they joined in an inspirational service to take as their own the Florence Nightingale Pledge, their Symbolic Nightingale lamps, and their treasured white caps. if ..wr 'i QMM Wx 5 .1 ,sk , fi s 6 Xt13x14'zh , Q. f 1, N' JUDITH ATKINS CONSTANCE BECKER MARJORIE BENJAMIN NANCY BURDICK CARMEL CANNELLA BETTY ANN CARTER PEGGY CARTER RACHEL COLADO AUDREY COOK MARSHA COVEY JANE DAVIES LILLIAN DAYS SARA DEVANE SARA DRISCOLL GRACE FISH NORMA FORD PATRICIA FULMER ALICIA CAGE MARTHA GERSEE SHIRLEY HAMMER CAROL HEAD JOAN HOPSON JOANNE HUMMER MARCIA JEWETT JANET JOHNSON TONI KIMBROUGH LOIS KIRBY PATRICIA KLUTTS HELEN LESTER GEORGIA LEWIS MARGUERITE NICKOLOS MARIE ORTNER HILDA PALENIUS CAROLYN PETERS JUDIE PRESTON ARNENE QUILLEN JEANNINE STORTS ELAINE TOKOS CAROLYN TROESTER MARY UMMARINO MARJORIE VANN NANCY VARNEY SANDRA WILCOX AUGUSTA WHITE JEANINE WRIGHT BETTY ZINSMEISTER 562' ,, , ,lg junior class Left to right: Iva Engelhart, Vice Presidentg Virginia Fernald, Treasurerg Anne Donaldson, President. No group amounts to anything without some social activity to offset work. Behind the scenes found some taking up water-skiing, others enjoying their leisure hours at Lakewood Country Club, and still others with their 'flamy' sessions. Christmas found Lovena Steel, alias Santa Claus, making rounds at lVl.P.H. February was a busy month - the Class sponsored a house dance and had a hay ride. April marked another split in our group as some left for clinical experience in pe- diatrics at Birmingham. Then the last part of May brought the day that we had all worked so hard for: the Senior prom, held at Lakewood Country Club. A few days later another groupof classmates left for Chatty', . . . and clinical experience in psychiatry. Now at last we are ready to add that final stripe to our cap and we hope that we will be able to accept the responsibilities of seniors. .IULIANNE ALLISON EVELYN ARICK IRENE BILLINGHAM BEVERLY ANN BOLT CORNELIA CALVERT ANN DONALDSON IVA NASH ENGELHART VIRGINIA FERNALD MARY FROST ALICE HARDING MARLENE HAWKINS MARGARET JACKSON EDNA KLEEN CECILE LANE GAYLE LEDGERWOOD BARBARA MANUEL NW! What a time we had those first few weeks learning everyone7s names and looking through the ustacksl' of books we were given! After weeks of hard work and study, we advanced from '4Mrs. Chasen to our first real live patient. Remember how important we thought we were when we could take temperatures? ln March 1953, we realized all our hard studying was worthwhile when Mrs. Terrill placed that plain cap on our heads. The next six months flew by and in September we received our first stripe. Soon it was time to start on affiliations in Birmingham and Chattahoochee. Excited and sad at the same time, we bade our fellow classmates good-bye. September 19541, we received our second stripe for our caps. We realized how un- worthy we really felt. Our last year of training, and there was still so much to learn. After three years, we achieved our highest goal . . . Graduation. Thanks to all those at Mound Park who have taught us so much by their understand- ing and patience. Beyond each of us lies a new field of serving and learning. Each will go her own way but, We'll not forget each other though we're far, far away. .april--1 Wm DOROTHY GYORY ADKINS DOTTIE Montgomery, Alabama To the woods f Clee Clubg Student Council, Second Vice President. Under the supervision and direction of Dr. Manor, this new group soon grew in size and musical proficiency. Many hours of hard work and effort went into the perfectioning of their musical skills and talents. With their first and successful year behind them, we look forward to a bigger and better organization. 'airp- , K-Jiezk... t :Sk-A' x i -zrsfirv l7'f?-'l'5- K 4'!' In September we had our Get-Acquainted party. Our skit at the Dessert party was based on Broad- way's Pajama Game, and included renditions of Hey There and the Arquiris Came Song by the entire club membership. Featured was a tango in Hernando's Hide- awayw by Saralee Thorpe and Dolores Scales. During Bush Week, the club gave away lemonade and candy at our booth under the leadership of Rush Captain, Marilyn Schauble. In November, nineteen new girls pledged Arquiris and were received into the club at a banquet at Mary Langanfs home. New members felt very glamorous with the orchid corsages that they re- ceived at the banquet. Drizzling rain kept putting out our fire at the Veteranfs Day picnic at Belleair Beach, but we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows in disregard for the elements. In Decem- ber, athletic captain, Fay Snow led us to a perfect Volleyball season . . . five losses, no wins. Our Christmas party at Jane Crogan's home was highlighted by the cus- tomary exchange of Christmas presents. Another party in honor of our brother club, the MD's, found us dancing and singing. We gave the traditional Christmas basket to a needy family, and had the annual Alumnae Banquet at the Wedgewood Inn honoring our advisor, Miss Dumas. After exams, MD's gave a wonderful party for us at Bruce Emeryas house. MARTHA STEPHENSON We also began planning for the eighteenth annual Valentine's dance, with Martha Stephenson as dance chairman. Extensive advertising. including thumping hearts in Assembly and five-yard-long posters, attracted an enthusiastic crowd, and a good time was had by all. The uHeartbeat'7 Ball was held at the Y.W.C.A. hall and Jean- nine and John Green reigned as Queen and King of Hearts. Throughout the spring we enjoyed a round of parties, picnics, and school activities. The annual Hindu dinner at Miss Dumas' home was a big success, and we enjoyed the oriental dish which has been a favorite of the club for years. Around school our members distinguished themselves as the following: ICC Sec- retary, Spanish Club reporterg Wooden Horse, News Editorg Sci-Math, Secretary- Treasurerg Varsity Volleyball Team membersg Future Teachers of America mem- bersg Band and chorus membersg Playmakersg Newman Club membersg and French Club members. Returning members modeled en sembles typical of 'flane Collegef, This popular Miss was honored further during the annual Dessert Party Where she Late in August the enthusiastic Didos set the p witnessed the 6'Dial D for Didow television program spon sored by queen-size and regular-size Didos. Seventeen pledges had their first taste of all the fun that was in store when informal iniation was held around a bonfire on the beach, followed by a merry night of little slumber. Turkey and all the trimmings set the scene for formal initiation early in November. Didos and Pyramids and their dates combined for a great evening of dancing and eating, in a party that was to be the 'first of many. Along with the hectic days of Christmas time, Didos initiated candy apple sales. The annual Alumnae Tea introduced the social gatherings on December 19, when the annual achievement plaque was presented to club prexy, Lois Stein. To add to the holiday bustling. twenty-eight Didos turned their many talents and enthusiasm into presenting Midnite Magic on New Year's Eve. Top hats, horns, and pink elephants Were scattered throughout the magical setting of the Dido's annual dance. As second semester came sliding into view, prospects of new pledges, parties, and the happy climax of a houseparty, promised continued good times for the Didos. Along with the yearis festivities. llitlos captured many honors around the campus.
