In recognition of your tireless effort on behalf of the stu- dents of St. Petersburg junior College, we, at this time bestow on you the highest faculty award of student recognition. We, the class of 1951 dedicate to you our most priceless possession, the diary of our days at Utopia Tech, our Troiad. For over a decade you've been helping guys and gals like us in your same quiet, unassuming manner, injecting a smile and dash of optimism into everything you undertake. The list of your achievements is endless: an executive in the Science department, an advisor to Sci-Math Club, a servant of the audio-visual needs of the college, a guardian of the Freshman Class, a booster of an amateur radio station, and a friend who always works behind the scene without thought of glory or reward, you've won our hearts and now our annual, Arthur Gay. May we always keep with us your memory and follow your example of limitless optimism, modesty, and under- standing. Bennett mf' It is with unusual pleasure and great pride that we view in retrospect this the first year of the presidency of Michael Bennett. This june marks the first anniversary of the inception of a new era at s St. Pete junior College, an era with a promising future of continued progress and increased good- will. Concrete examples of this progress may be seen in the beautiful two-tone green walls, the new - fri ,st Ry, sf. M. athletic courts, the much-needed re-landscaping and -I the completion of the auditorium. Progress under President Bennett has not been limited, however, to s s material achievements, but is evident also in the N- lbs, -WL' -ra-m.'1g5f yiV5w .4 . sms-'s 'Al . .f cr, ' 4 HQ: N guise of a carefully planned orientation program, a L .5 new policy toward chapel attendance, and non-cen- A sorship of student publications. Michael Bennett's co-operative spirit manifests itself in his unusual interest in student activities and his broad understanding of student problems, his having been a student here only a short while ago. His sincere friendliness permeates the atmosphere of our Trojan Empire and his warm smile promotes the spirit of companionship among teachers and students alike. May nineteen fifty-one always be remem- bered as the first year in a long and successful tenure of office for Mr. Mike, our president. aw Q V. J 1 :aw FLOYD T. CHRISTIAN The School Year 1950-1951 has been marked by substantial advancement and improvement at the St. Petersburg junior College. I take pride in pointing out to our many friends the fine advancement and educa- tional progress of the college. With your young and energetic President, your capable faculty, and with added plant improvements, I can safely predict continued improve- ment in the educational program. The Superintendent and School Board shall continue to review the phases of growth at the junior College and make plans for an adequate plant that is consistent with the progress and advancement of the college. The educational progress of any institution is a result of continued cooperation between students, faculty, parents, and friends. We have this type of cooperation in our county. It is my sincere wish that each student graduating will continue his loyalty and devotion, and pledge his support in the future to build a bigger and better junior College. The worst was soon over and the Arquirians began carrying out their motto a party for every month and a cookie sale for every holiday. September featured an outdoor barbecue at Skip Lambert's, October, a candlelight initiation supper given by advisor, Miss Vera Dumas, November, a get-together at Bahama Shores, and December, a Gift Exchange Party at Pat Bradshaw's. The biggest event of the Holidays was the Alumni Banquet at the Chatterbox preceeding the Homecoming Dance. Here came the new year and after cramming for exams, the gals forgot their worries and stuffed themselves with food at the january Pot Luck Supper. The most eventful month on the Arquirian calendar was February when the gals presented The Heart Beat Hop featuring Miss Heartbeat of 1951, most beautiful coed, alias Elsie the Borden Cow. One of the outstanding lovelies in this group is Miss june Morgan. june has made a name for herself by being elected a poster girl, sharing the title of Miss Calendar Girl of 1950, very ably taking over the presidency of Arquiris, being president of FTA, working on Troiad as Co-Literary Editor, and on top of all this, taking command of the Wooden Horse with the editorship. We sometimes wonder if our 'lunie ever got time to eat and sleep. Resting on their laurels they slid through the rest of the year with a March Initiation Supper and April Apple Polishing Party, honoring the faculty, and in May finished off with a Farewell Party. Cecelia Dawson's brother, Pete, gave them the inspiration to use all their energy eating raw eggs and painting the shells for Rush Party favors. The clever gentlemen with egg heads won sixteen new pledges for the girls, swelling the club ranks to 19. Old Didos, advised by Mrs, Gladys Longwell, greeted the pledges honor- ing them with a barbecue at Marilyn Buley's and continuing the evenings festivities with a slumber party at Cecelia Dawson's. Helen Gustafson, Rush Captain, played hostess at the impressive candlelight ceremony October 30th when the new pledglings became full-pledged Didos, no longer Dodos. In November, Prexy Gloria Saenger brought fame to her club when the student body elected her one of the Esquire Calendar Girls of 1951 and honored her at the Skyros Dance. Then came Spring and with it the highlite of the Dido year, their informal dance-and we do mean informal, with a splendid time had by all. Dido was also well represented in the Prom Queens Court by attendants Margaret Nolan and Gloria Saenger. Graduation ended a year of sports, slumber parties, suppers, dances, and cookie sales for the Didos. ,MQW E , , MT' f, Q M, , t df' lil 1. Ami Xxx , OFFICERS Peggy Philips ......,,.., ...... HCC hoisted its anchor and set sail this September with a mighty crew of members aboard. Sharing their initiation with Pyramids, they presented their young ladies with lovely corsages and completed the evening with a glorious party. From the fall and into the winter season, there were numerous cookie sales, fruit sales, and more parties. During Christmas HCC shared a party with Pyramids again and at the Mistletoe Ball, their own jo Songer was one of the Queen's attendants. The new year was started off with showers for engagements and weddings. Their sails then directed the crew 'toward a very delicious Valentine Cookie Sale. With smooth sailing all the way they stopped and dropped anchor momentarily to share their Easter dance with Pyramids. Many of their outstanding crew members find their names engraved in the bow of the ship. Those which have serenaded the weary crew are Eljeane Agnew, Mary Anne Sparkman, and Mary Anne Wittstruck with accompanist Imogene McHale. Those guiding the group are Phi Theta Kappa members, Virginia Martin, Anne Fast, and Janice Pringle. Much of the credit is due Captain Arlene Wise, with advising crew mem- ber Mrs. Scott. MANO September meant rushing with a capital R for MANO. With the help of the blue and yellow daisy they shared a large percentage of pledges. The first event of the year was a Card Party at Minna Rosenbaum's to fete the neopledges. But there were more festive occasions in-store. Next to the Detroit Hotel, with president Betty jean Cromartie and advisor Mrs. Canta well, where the newcomers received their lovely corsages and pins for initiation. From there, they cruised up to Mary Odeneath's in Clearwater, to rest their weary bodies in slumber. Proving the Mano tradition for athletic prowess, the lassies again won the volleyball and kickball tournaments and are well on the way to winning the Girls' Intramural Athletic plaque. But most outstanding of all, was the presentation of the Athletic Award to a well deserved gal named Lois Waterson. And to roll up the athletic mat, Lorraine Schildnecht cheered her sisters on to victory with her Pep Song especially tailored for the Mano athletes. Mano proudly waves their banner for two outstanding young ladies. Lois Waterson was a Mistletoe Queen attendant, carrying on the reputation of party girls, and along with this, being equally proud of Anne Lewis, mem- bership in Phi Theta Kappa. In the month of january, the club took several carloads of enthusiastic members to have a rip-roaring time at the Large Fair. But most important of all, was Mano's presentation of the Follies of 1951, this past spring, with a gay festival and stage show. The pledges were honored at a beach picnic, where the rigors of club life Cie., girls, sandy food, girls, cigar smoke, girls, gulf winds, but mainly girlsj became evident. A dignified initiation ceremony was held at the Boyett manse for these fourteen pledges who made the grade. Afterwards the members got together with the HCC's and had a party at Arlene Wise's home. While there, new Freshman President Hamilton told a shaggy dog story. This was just one of the many delightful times that the Pyramid-HCC brother-sister club combination had together. Go, Pyramids, go! And they did, winning the intramural football championship after a tough campaign in which they were behind Sigmas all season. Then, in that last hard fought game, sudden-death broke the scoreless deadlock and spelled victory for their team. Under the leadership of Captain Parkes, along with the cheering section Ccourtesy of jack Martin and Adrian Brownj Pyramids had won the championship. Witli the oncoming Christmas season, out came the little blue boxes of Christmas cards and the long, convincing sales. Pyne and Greenleaf were known as super salesmen. Some of the others, well, they can be engineers. At the start of the New Year the Pyramids outfitted all their delegate heads with dazzling plaid hats. These distinguished gentlemen could be spotted from one end of the campus to the other. The hats looked good on girl friends, too. Witli the loss of President Boyett, we find jack Peneleit ably filling his shoes, putting the club back into full swing of activities again. During the spring the Pyramids held their big Easter Dance and had a few more parties. In keeping up with their slogan, For a Better jC, Watc'l1 Us, they continued their program of school projects, rounding out a full and most enjoyable year. .i ,w.w ,YM wY-w.W.Y.....,... v .
