The Bishop' s Men When the Bishop's Men went to work this year, a number of changes were evident. The directorship of the group had been taken over by Father Leeming in the absence of Mr. Carter, who left Saint Peter's at the end of last year. Under their new director the Bishop's Men increased their number from the customary eight to an unprecedented fourteen. This enlargement had three distinct advan- tages. It gave greater depth to the numbers that the group did, it provided a greater range from which to choose particular voices for special songs, and it gave valuable experience to those who will be chosen next year to fill the strat- egic vacancies left by the five graduadng members of the group. The Bishop's Menis repertoire for this year included Negro Spirituals, Col- lege Glees, folk songs, popular numbers, and quite a bit of sacred music to add variety to the secular division of their program. The tastes of the Bishop's Men leaned toward Negro Spirituals and a lively comic tune entitled George Jones. This was, as it had been in the past few years, the particular favorite of the group, and it is well on its way to becomin a tradition. The Bishop's Men has admirably accomplished its goal this year in giving a great deal of balance to Glee Club programs by lending variety and a light note to their concerts. ltis hoped that the Bishop's Men of the future will do as well as they have done this year. The Singing Peers This year the Glee Club, although it may not have been as large as it has been in years gone by, has made an admirable record for itself. In addition to acquiring many fine new voices, the Glee Club has added quite a bit to its tor- mer collection of songs, and, through the efforts of Thorne Foster, the Clee Club librarian, this increase in repertory has been kept track of well. The Glee Club's format consisted of a large number of secular and religious songs. The sacred part of this collection was gleaned from the Mass, from Christ- mas carols, and from traditional favorites. The secular division was made up of numbers taken from hit Broadway shows, College Glees, and familiar old Negro Spirituals. Thus the Glee Club had a well-rounded program planned out tor its concerts. During the course of the year the Glee Club made many short trips to neighboring parishes and communities. There they sang the Mass and delivered concerts when they had been scheduled. This program of visits was climaxed by the tour taken during the Spring Holidays, when the Glee Club went into New jersey for a period of three days. In that time they enjoyed the hospitality of Hohokus, Bordentown, and Trenton. At Hohokus they sang the Mass, and at Bordentown and Trenton they gave concerts. The tour was highly successful, and provided a weekend full of work and fun for all those connected with the Glee Club. Taken as a whole, this year was one of the most successful ever seen at Saint Peter's. The work was well interspersed with pleasure, making it a well- rounded as well, as an excellent' year. Above all, the sincerest thanks of all the Glee Clubbers go to Father Leeming and Iimmy Reyes for the finest perform- ance ever tumed in. 32 THQ' MITRE
