During the 1956 1957 school term our beloved Sisters of Mercy celebrated the 125th anniversary of the foundation of their order in Dublin, Ireland by the saintly and revered Mother Mary Catherine McAuley To commemorate such a signi ficant year we are weaving together the pages of this annual with excerpts from the writings of the holy Foundress, who was an outstanding educator and social worker Less than ten years after her death in l8Ll her spiritual daughters had crossed the Atlantic to continue the works of mercy on America's shores On this page is an insignia dear to the heart of every student taught by the Sisters of Mercy the MERCY SHIELD We of St Peter's see this shield daily above the auditorium stage we anticipate with pride the day when we may behold it at the head of our commencement invitations above all, we hope to prove worthy of wearing it throughout life as a prominent feature of our class rings SPIRITUAL WORKS MERCY instruct the ignorant counsel the doubtful comfort the sorrowful bear wrongs patiently forgive all injuries admonish the sinner pray for the living and the dead Red bars upon a field of gold, White Cross upon a field of red Courage, the red, Purity, the white The Cross for Sacrifice.
