Various exhibits displaying catalogs and pamphlets pertaining to professions, careers, technical training, and industries were skill- fully arranged by an indefatigable committee and carefully inspected by interested students during their assigned periods in the auditorium. How Catholics can fit into the world today as influential factors, was brought clearly home to us by men and women representing ways of life such as nursing, teaching, insur- ance, manufacturing, law, and politics. Even though some of us are not yet decided as to what we want to be, we are all sure that we have a special vocation to carry Christ out with us into the world. 77 X Bl!!! DING VIGOROUS HEAZTH.. Murphy opened the i948 campaign with an inexperienced but hard- fighting football squad. The term fighters was applied to the team known as the Car- dinals because their play was inspired by that never say die spirit. The team was well drilled in the fundamentals and teamwork so essential to the game by Coach Murphy and his efficient staff of assistants. The record of games won and lost is not important, for the team was outclassed and outweighed in all but a few of the contests. Their sportsmanship, how- ever, and the caliber of their play were remarkable. The games were all interesting and hard fought. The fine all-around ability of captain Bill Barry, the running of Pete Ferris and Joe Szabo, the bruising line backing of Frank Lock- wood and Bill Gavin, and the sparkling line play of Joe McNally, Ed Shamy, Frank Krivas, Ed Dwyer, Joe Collins, and Herkey Yetman were all outstanding. After putting up terrific strug- gles against South River and New Brunswick, the latter needing a second-half surge to win, the Cardinals, slowed by numerous injuries, dropped the next six in a row. ln the last game of the season, however, the Cards could not be stopped and presented their coach with a well-earned l3-O victory over favored Lambertville. 80 . Following a loss to Rahway and a defeat at the hands of St. Rose's, the Perth Amboy Panthers took the year's series with the Car- dinals. However, the boys ended the season on a successful note, beating St. Mary's of South Amboy, New Brunswick High, and Perth Amboy Catholic. Entering the State Tournament, the Cards drew Trenton Catholic for the fifth straight year and were eliminated by the Capital City five. ln the season's finals the Cards lost to a strong Regis Five by a 55-4l score in a benefit contest. All in all, the season was a successful one. Coach Kreiger, who is to be commended on the outstanding job he did in training and molding his squad into a smooth, aggressive unit, should be proud of his boys. Led by Jack O'Rourke, Chuck Lezark and Bill Barry, the Cardinals gave an excellent account of themselves in all the games played. JAY-VEE I-'OOTBAH COACH Ed Beetle Susan, in his second year as Jay-Vee coach, fashioned a squad which, facing a tough schedule, gave a good account of itself, winning three, tying two and losing one game for a .750 average. This season was the best the Jay-Vees have had in recent years. Led by the ball-carrying of Bob Thorne and Norm Vliet, and the fighting line play of Ray Curry, Bill Baab and Eddie Letostak, the little Cards downed Metuchen, Highland Park and Dunellen, tied New Brunswick and Perth Amboy, and lost their only game to the strong South River Reserves. Although the boys did not break into the winning column too often, they played a good, spirited brand of basketball, losing many tough games by a very slight margin. Coach O'Rourke, who also guided a good Freshman team, is not too in- terested in the result of games won and lost. His main purpose is to give the boys first class experience which is so necessary when it is their turn to wear the Varsity Cardinal red. ,..,...,23 St. Rose's lBelmarl,,,,.,,,,,, ,..,.a,,2l La Salle Military lL. ,,,,,,,,22 Regis IN.
