Sm PETEWS RECTORY 322 SOUTH FIFTH STREET READING. PA. My dear Graduates, - I am sending you this brief message with my blessing as you take on the sterner realities of life. You are facing a world reeling under the impact of a ghastly war. The problems created by it offer a serious challenge to all your resources. However, your thorough training augurs complete mastery of any difficulty that may beset your paths. Dedicated to the principle that education must comprehend the whole man, body and soul, your school has neither overlooked or undervalued the needs of either. By athletic programs she promotes physical well-beingg and by fostering friendly competition she helps build good sports manship and reverence for moral values. Keenly conscious that Wknowledge is power' she is instant in her effort to impart it. The education that prevails outside the Catholic school has intellectual development or culture, as they call it, for its final goal. Its faults are painfully evident today. Without, however, discounting the values of intellectual endowment, your school maintains of paramount and vital importance the training of the will. Put God first, she says, in all the relations of life and let His will, as shown forth in His law, be its govern- ing principle. With her, God is the foundation and Key-stone of all her trainingg character, not culture is her specific aim. It is conduct and not culture that determines the fate of the soul, for Sacred Scripture tells us, NIf you know these things you shall be blessed if you do them.U Let then, conformity to His will be a living and energizing force directing you, and certain victory will crown your work. Now as you go your separate ways, I will close my valedic- tion with a short but apposite poem: One Ship drives East and another drives West With the self-same winds that blow 'Tis the set of the sails and not the gales That determines whither they go. Like the winds of the seas are the ways of fate As we voyage along through life, 'Tis the set of the soul that determines the goal And not the calm or the strife. iffy, v 7
