PETER, MINNESOTA EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: PATTY MILLER MANAGING EDITOR: MARIA LOKENSGARD Table Of Contents Special Memories Competition Knowledge Involvement Getting There Seniors Those Were The Days . . . 1964 and you see a million new faces as you enter a world of crayons and sand- boxes. You would never have made it through that first day if it wasn't for that comer of your blanket that you cut off to bring to school with you. (Thank goodness Mom didn't find out.) It was hard to tell who cried the most that day-you or your mom. . . • Having handled the first day jitters extremely well last year, you decide to be the hot snot on the 2nd grade campus. Here's your chance-you see a girl with long hair in front of you, so you bravely yank her hair. Much to your dismay, you find out it was the teacher who was sitting on the floor, and you, the hot-shot , re- main in class while everyone else is at the playground. . . . The agony of getting a vaccination shot is upon you. You try to convince the nurse that you are the healthiest kid around and that you will never get any disease and all she says is to get back in line. For the first time you experience what is known as a cold sweat. . . . The days of girls chasing and boys running are upon you. Seventh grade also brings the terrible thought of phy. ed. (with showers). By a sheer miracle you make it through the school to find your first room. Only, 5 minutes between classes is so short! . . . By ninth grade the boys have finally stopped running and have slowed down to a walk, but now the girls are a little more picky. . . . Thirteen years have passed and 1977 is now upon us. This is the story of 1977— a story and year that can never be again... 3 4 Our Friend God speaks to us in the gentle rain That splashes and taps on our windowpane; We hear His voice in the comforting sigh Of the wind as it goes murmuring by, In the roar of the sea and the song of birds, We hear the majesty of His words, And when silent nights wear a star-studded crown God talks in a language transcending all sound; But His message of hope and love without end Is most clearly heard in the voice of a friend. — Dean Walley It is difficult to find a person who gives of himself so much to please so many. The flowers that he places around the school, the messages he gives on gradua- tion cards to the seniors, his golden thoughts on blackboards, and his kindnesses are all a part of a special man that we are fortunate to have in our school. We the staff of the 1977 Peterian would like to dedi- cate this poem, this book, and our thanks to Mr. Avery Pettis, the gentle giant of the third floor, our janitor and our friend... s Special Memories Mr. Perdaems and Jerry Crawford's performance with the Pop Group... some of the world's greatest minds coming to speak in a town of 8,300 people... 1st mock convention since 1968.. .having Mr. Elling's dream come true by doing Our Town for the spring play.. .1st all-school play, R.U. As classes from past years return to SPHS for homecoming, vivid memories return about their bonfires, the snake dances that wiggled their way down main street, and the all important football games. Memories also include bobby socks, long pleated skirts, and the many crew cuts which used to plague the school. - ' Homecoming 1976 was definitely unique—not because of the activities alone, but because of the students. Thinking of the 1976-1977 school year one may recall famous sayins such as seriously now , stick it in your ear , you whooper , you queer , I'm having tumors , spastic , shut your beak , sit on it , you nerd , you fruit , How bad! , you turkey , Oh birds , and no thank you please . Even though these will never make it into Bartlett's book of FAMILAR QUOTATIONS, they serve as a reminder of our unforgettable year. We must not forget the happenings, fads, pranks, and other what-nots which also helped make 1977 great. How many other classes can brag about having a sign-up contest to be Kevin Sorensen's prom date? Not many people can say they have completely shaved their heads—Matt Rheaume can. Then along came Renegade's Defeat, Derner's attempt at a homecoming party, f an arr'val °f swine flue shots! More special features of 1977 % include having two Mrs. Turrittins, the changing of the school paper's name from Peter Patter to The Communicator , and H1 the yearbook's adoption of it's first mascot, Spike. Li_ Reflect, Relive and Remember A multitude of memories, from current fashions to teachers long gone, emerge at home- coming time. In 1977 fashions were, of course, different from any other year. Who can forget painter's pants, boots-n-gauchos, cowl necks, cords, -ugby shirts, and bib over- alls? Historical! highlights from the class of 1977'siIlustrious past include rebuilding our rained out tenth grade float and the sigh of relief we all gave when we just missed co-ed gym classes. Of course we can't forget the ninth grade paper drive in which we won the Most Hard-Working award. And what about watching Miss Shellabarger (as she was called then) when the intercom fell on her? In seventh grade remember all the Junior Scholastics we got every week, and kept on getting in eighth grade, too? We must not forget the teachers who have now left us: Mr. Bieraugel, Mr. Theuer, Mr. Peterson, Mr. Osterkamp, and Mr. Caldwell, to name a few. And don't forget the many substitutes we got rid of in tenth grade English before Mrs. Turrittin came. This is what homecoming is all about; a chance to recreate the times spent in and around school. As we return to SPHS during the homecomings of future years, these mem- ories of 1976-1977 will let us reflect, relive, and remember a year that has been one of a kind. A year that can not and will not be again. 2. CC Runners caught riding 5. Now listen here buddy ... 8. D. Bowles heading for a T.D. 1. Here's Ronny . . . 3. Some of the sights on Jersey Day. 6. WINNING STATE “We’re Number One!!!” 11 ■ es As the seconds faded away, the fans knew that the prediction about the St. Peter Saints would become a reality;'they became the Class A State Football Champions when they beat the Mora Mustangs 56-12. November 19, 1976 marked the first time in SPHS' history that a team ever became a state champion. Highlights of the game included watching Ron Straka tear apart the Mora defense for over 200 yards, Dave Malmquist and Ron Hill each having two interceptions, and leading 46-6 at half-time. With this final game, the seniors ended their varsity high school football career with a 23-1 record. The stands were packed, as usual, with enthusiastic (although frostbitten) fans and, as usual, they were not disappointed. The margin of points may have stunned a few, but it was a St. Peter Style victory all the way. To end the season. Head Coach Lyle Eidness was named Minnesota State High School Coach of the year and announced his resignation at St. Peter to coach at Stout University in Meninomie, Wisconsin. As Ed Drenttel's shirt proclaimed, St. Peter Saints — 1976 State Champs ... the dream that became a reality ... WINNING STATE We’re Number One -- Again!!! The headlines read: SAINTS RIP CADETS; ADVANCE TO SEMIS , ROOSEVELT BLASTED OUT OF TOURNEY , SAINTS OUTPLAY EDINA 11-1 . These were the signs that proved once again that the St. Peter Saints are number one as the baseball team literally ran away with the 1977 State High School Baseball Championship Title. Head Coach Tom Burg in his first year coached the Saints to an 11-1 championship victory over Edina East to earn the title at St. Cloud on June 18, 1977. The Saints completely de- molished Edina ending the game after the fifth inning giving up only one run which was on a walk. Ron Hill hit the winning run for the Saints driving Dan Bowles Home. Bob Bresna- han was the winning pitcher for the Saints. The Saints were welcomed back to St. Peter with royalty as the team was paraded through town. A reception was held at the high school with a full house present. The Saints and the rest of the team tipped their hats to the fans for their loyal support throughout the tourneys. The St. Peter Saints are number one — as usual............. Holly McDonough Kris Gray ADVISOR Friends, We Will Remember You This is it — it is our time to leave and make way for others.. As we began this year the thought of leaving was far in the future but now the future has become the present. Every so often our paths will cross, leaving some imprint by which we remember each other. To remember everything about our year is hard, but we hope you will occasionally visit the past through the pictures, places, and sayings we have put down in this book. We would like to express our deep appreciation to all appearing in this book, for you are the people of '77. Although we have been able to capture only a part of SPHS on these pages, we hope you will be able to relive the laughter, tears, and personal memories of 1977. May sunshine and happiness be yours always.......... Good-bye, Patty and Murn 144 WORLD EVENTS 7 15 76 AMY’S ON TOP — Jimmy Carter holds daughter, Amy, as his wife.
