PETERIAN 1968 St. Peter High School St. Peter, Minnesota CONTENTS HIGHLIGHTS 5 CURRICULUM 19 ACTIVITIES 29 ATHLETICS 59 CLASSES 75 FACULTY 99 FOREWORD THE YEAR OF THE HAPPENING High School is a Happening. A child en- ters high school; he grows, he makes friends, he learns, he has fun. And then, suddenly, it's happened! He is no longer a child but a young adult. This is the story of one year of that happening--the year of 1968. Dedicated to Lars Nesvig Tenth-grade American History was Mr. Lars Nes- vig--it was a gruff voice, a booming laugh, a Democratic Norwegian--it was a man. These pages are given to him much as his days were given to us. ;. T ' Eva Luger AFS student from Vienna, Austria I want to thank everyone of St. Peter High School, the student body, the faculty and the many friends I made here for what they have done for me to make this school year 1967 68 the most beautiful in my life. It was full of new and exciting experiences, which I will never forget. I learned many things and loved the U.S. as I love my own country. I was fortunate enough to come to such a wonderful school and I only hope that I can further an understanding between the two countries so that the motto of the AFS can come true; Walk together, talk together, O you peoples of the Earth. Then and only then shall you have peace! “V ROYAL COURT: B. Monke, S. Glass, C. Simonett, J. Schroeder, E. Erhorn, L. Gustafson, L. Swenson, M. Pehrson, P. O'Brien, C. Johnson, N. Regenscheid, Y. Carter, M. Dahleen, Y. Menk, V. Anderson. HOMECOMING Things began happening this year with Homecoming 1967. Peggy O'Brien was crowned our queen Friday afternoon. The game was chilly and windy, but the royal court was radiant, the Nebraska Wesleyan University Band entertained at halftime, and the Saints defeated Waseca 33-13. Spirits were high at the dance, and there was every indication of a great year to come. Y. Menk, C. Simonett, J. Schroeder, and M. Dahleen cheer the announce- Queen Peggy ment of E. Erhorn and Y. Lorhammer really go for that Newlywed Game. SADIE HAWKINS Sadie Hawkins was more than a dance this year. It was a daylong affair. Girls were to carry their dates' books as well as escort them to and from school. The climax was the dance, complete with modern dances, square dances, polkas, Marrying Sam, and Divorcing Dan. A1 Simonett, chosen by popular vote, was crowned Mr. Sadie Hawkins. The evening ended with the mock wedding of Gene Schwartz and Laurie Gustafson and the awarding of prizes. The evening began with a banquet at the GAC Dining Room, where after dinner, those present heard the Rev. Nelson's speech and music. Later in the evening students danced to the music of the New Generation. Fol- lowing the dance, an After-prom was held at the Shoreland Country Club. The happy events of the evening on a carousel will long turn in the minds of many. The Carousel P. O'Brien, A. Simonett, Y. Carter, and S. Neils lead tire Grand March. 13 M. Hergert and S. They are studies of human culture, progress, and government, all cov- ered in social classes. They are studies of human communica- tion. Students learn, in English and foreign language classes, to use language as a means of expressing their own ideas and of receiving those of other men. They are the classes most essential to a liberal education--an education necessary for every man who is to be truly free. 21 THE ARTS The many hours that are spent in putting the finishing touches on a painting or sculpture, getting a play ready for opening night, and putting voices in harmony for band and choir concerts are full of fun and enjoyment for all who participate, but the greatest rewards lie in the applause and laughter of an audience and in the feeling of accomplishment. It takes much more than facts and figures to make an interesting and complete person, and through these activities we become well-rounded and engag- ing individuals. 23 THE SCIENCES The sciences at SPHS are the math and chemistry classes -- those groups of twenty-five dazed teen-agers silently vowing to avoid all math and science in college while the teacher valiantly re-explains theorems or molecular composition. They are the hours of dissecting in biology and the experiments that never quite succeed. But they are also the classes that give us at least a vague understanding of genetics, of how matter is composed, and of why the earth keeps spinning. They can give us a greater appreciation for the wonders of the universe and for the men developing it through science. 25 9 VOCATIONAL The curriculum at SPHS includes a wide variety of vocational courses. They help prepare students for futures as homemakers, secretaries, craftsmen, and mechanics. Both the facilities and the instructors provided for these courses are excellent. They are succeeding in generating ever-greater interest in the school's vocational program. PHYSICAL EDUCATION The curriculum at SPHS not only helps to develop the student's mind, but his body also. Phy. Ed. is extended to every student in grades seven through ten. Juniors and seniors may also take advantage of these classes by serving as gym assistants. Athletic strength is developed while stu- dents learn the skills of team sports--to be enjoyed now--and the skills of individual sports--to be used now and in the future. But at SPHS, this department has come to be looked on by many as more than simply a training ground for developing the body. Thanks to the dedication of excellent teachers, Miss Wilharber and Mr. Johnson, it has become a training ground for develop- ing character, too. DRIVER’S EDUCATION Probably the most popular and imme- diately beneficial course offered at SPHS is Drivers' Education. Our thanks to Mr. Nelson and Mr. Erickson for helping to make the students of our school skilled and responsible drivers. 28 £ 0 t'f'j ' H O htSk. STUDENT COUNCIL The 1967-68 Student Council can be proud of many accomplishments. It started off with an excellent, well- planned Homecoming and then worked on such things as revision of the dress code and dances. Highlighting the year was the General Meeting, which allowed the entire senior high student body to express its opinions. The Council worked diligently for AFS by sponsoring a talent show, a record-breaking penny drive, and by assisting with the Adult AFS Candy Drive. They could be found, busily at work any Tuesday night at St. Peter High School. In the chemistry room, super- vised by Mr. Dierks, were mad chemists deciding what would happen if two drops of nitric acid were put into a sulfuric acid bottle. It was too late to make any real changes for the '67-'68 issues, but work was begun immediately to make improvements for next year's Peter Patter. The need for changes was emphasized by the success of a rival paper, the Pool Hall News, and the editors ended the school year hard at work attempting to combine the merits of both papers for the Peter Patter of the future. FOOTBALL The 1967 football season began with a disap- pointing loss to Lakeville. This was, however, only the first game, and the line-ups had to be changed somewhat to find the right combinations. After a tie with LeSueur, the team continued to improve despite a major setback in being defeat- ed by Fairmont. One of the high points of the season was the victory over Blue Earth, who had had a 34 game winning streak terminated just the week before. This was sweet revenge for the defeat suffered at their hand in 1966. At the end of the season, the Saints found them- selves second in the conference with a 6-1 record, the best of any St. Peter football team in the last six years. 60 COACHES Mr. Braunger, Mr. Neisheim, Mr. Booren, Mr. Johnson. WRESTLING The 1967-68 wrestling season can best be described as a team-building one; however, even with their inexperience, our Saints placed closed records in the conference and in the district. Seven grapplers advanced to the region, but were eliminated. The animal- like ferocity of the Saints on the mat drew complimentary remarks from opponents' coaches and referees. With the exception of the last few weeks of the season, the team was not plagued with injuries. Simultaneously, the B-squad did a fine job of manhandling their opponents. Also worthy of praise are the fine junior high boys, who again captured the championship at Hutchinson. The future is very promising in regards to the returning lettermen and the prospective fill- ins for those graduating. A-SQUAD, KNEELING: K. Hamrum, Manager, T. Witty, T. Langsjoen, D. Burg, T. BASKETBALL The Saints approached the 1967-68 season with uncertainty. With a new coach and only two lettermen returning, it was just a building year. Coach Mayer, however, put together a fine team. Despite the 8-12 season record, we felt that with a few breaks the games could have gone the other way. Although it is still winning that really counts, the season was not a complete loss, for in winning and losing alike, we learned something about life. The sacrifices and hard work made us not only better players but also better people. Thus, the efforts of Mr. Mayer and Mr. Waltman were not in vain; many fine memories will be kept for years of the 67-68 season. B-SQUAD, KNEELING: R. Gustafson, D. Lurth, M. Dummer, N. Goursky, D. TRACK Having lost six record-holders from the 1967 squad and with just two seniors returning, the 1968 SPHS track team was very young and inexperienced. Through hard work, however, the team was able to produce a successful season. After placing fourth in the conference meet, the Saints went on to win the next four against formidable opponents. The highlight of the season was the team’s successful defense of the District 13 Championship for the ninth year in a row. Ten participants were sent on to the region. This year we had a fine group of athletes to work with, but special mention should be given to the coaches, Mr. Braunger and Mr. Johnson, who de- serve much credit for the season's success. The results of their work do not show up just in the won-lost record, but also in the effects that they have had on the character and attitudes of their athletes. 66 68 BASEBALL COACHES: Mr, Booren and Mr. Nesheim. Winning and success are the goals of every athletic team. While winning and be- ing successful are nice, knowing that the team has tried is more important. The 1967-68 season was not very successful through the win-loss record, but those who saw the games and the team, know that the team did try and was a success. When ask- ed about the year, Coach Nesheim replied that he thought we had a better team than the records show. KNEELING: D. Skoog, T, Langsjoen, C. Babcock, D. Burg, T. Burg, K. Olson, G. Forsythe, J. Abrahamson. STANDING: R, Schoeb, M. Hoffmann, C. Johnson, S. Niels, M. Hergert, D. Archer, R. Nielson, L. Swenson. TENNIS In the past few years the tennis team has suffered the loss of some of its experienced men. This year with only two returning lettermen, Mr. Sipes had much new blood to work with. Although the team looked somewhat down at the beginning of the sea- son, things picked up as the team was in- stilled with enthusiasm and confidence. With the remarkable improvement in the new mem- bers of the 1968 team, at the close of the sea- son, Mr. Sipes felt that the next year's team would make a good showing. KNEELING: D. Esbjornson, P. Davis, R. Reid. STAND- ING: G. Block, K. Foss, Mr. Sipes, M. Prust, D. Nichols. 70 KNEELING: B. Worrell, R. Gustafson, G. Sweberg. STAND- ING: D. Lorhammer, J. Glass, D. Lurth, Mr. Aanonsen. GOLF The golf team, under the ex- pert guidance of Mr. Aanonsen, has again shown outstanding quality and precision. The Saints record for 1968 was 5-3-2 along with the District title. Despite the loss of seniors Jeff Glass and Donn Lorhammer, the coach is expecting fine results from the returning underclassmen. These boys have shown a real spirit of achievement and sports- manship. 71 FOOTBALL WE Lakeville 6 LeSueur 13 Glencoe 26 Fairmont 7 New Ulm 19 Waseca 33 St. James 33 Blue Earth 14 Hutchinson 13 BASKETBALL WE LeSueur 54 Owatonna 45 Hutchinson 65 Wells 50 Waseca 48 Fairmont 58 Alexander-Ramsey 63 St. Cloud Tech. 63 Blue Earth 69 Cleveland 76 St. James 55 Hutchinson 54 Mankato 54 Glencoe 37 Waseca 43 Fairmont 47 New Ulm 43 District Games Belle Plaine 79 Le Center 71 LeSueur 54 WRESTLING WE LeSueur 17 Blue Earth 24 Le Center 32 Glencoe 26 New Ulm 35 St. James 14 Hutchinson 20 Richfield 33 Waseca 29 Mankato 10 ST.
