Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1960 volume:

Memory is the only Paradise from which we cannot be turned out. Our memories of Lesley are a part of that Paradise. Is there one among us who will forget, that radiant smile, that gracious attitude, that utter devo- tion to her school and her classmates? Is there one among us who will forget the courage with which she faced the inevitable? The GREAT RULER took her from us, but we shall all be better for having known her. Portrait by Lorhammer To All Members of the Class of I960 As you are departing our sheltered class- rooms now and begin launching out into life's full stream, we trust our future to your leader- ship. We challenge you to continue to land the punch of Our American Dream for our four freedoms - freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear itself - that the preservation of these free- doms may be your guiding lights in the world. We have enjoyed the brief challenge as your teachers, to inspire you to harness the potential power within you for the good of all mankind. The future of Our American Dream is in your hands. May you use your power well! Sincere best wishes, Ole Haugejorde MR. OLE HAUGEJORDE, Superintendent Sc6ooC Mr. Edwin Baker, Director; Mr. E. Clayton Davis, Director; Mr. Wayne Pettis, Treas- urer; Mr. Ole Haugejorde, Superintendent; Mrs. William MacKenzie, Chairman; Mr. Byron Livingston, Business Manager; Dr. Carlton Strathem, Director; Mr. George W. Anderson, Clerk. MR. ROBERT C. HALL, Principal s4cUHcttt tnatto t Opportunity for a success in life will fall back largely on what we have done and established as a foundation in this school. Education represents a growing portion of each of us. In it we find the background for creating our own opportunity. If we are not indebted, we should at least be thankful for the education we have received, and for the faculty, who are largely responsible for the type of education. They have in- serted the spark and left the impression. They have created the meaning for the ideas that will continue to influence our way of life. MR. BYRON LIVINGSTON MRS. ARDYCE WORRELL MR. The members of the club process books, take over for the school librarian at times, and other work in the library. This year they had their Christmas Party December 14. This year the club began selling paper back books in the library to increase their funds. Right now the Library Club is in the process of planning their Third Annual Spring Tea. 78 TYPISTS - SITTING: Sharon Severson, Gloria Rehome STANDING: Mary Lou Beran, Patty Hager, Peggy Thisius (missing) PHOTOGRAPHERS: Earl Rodine and Mr. Lorhammer ARTISTS - SITTING: Melanie Paul, Jane Doran STANDING: Mike Gustafson, Carolyn Cole BUSINESS STAFF - FIRST ROW: Anita Martens, Tom PROOFREADERS - STANDING: Nancy Ollerman SITTING: Mary Ann Geneliu, Virginia Vick, Anne Lawson Davis, Kathy Gran SECOND ROW: Marge Tepley, Jane Strathern, Carolyn Dry, Kathy Quirk THIRD ROW: John Aho, Mark Schaus, Art Cavara, Beth Martin, Patty Nelson COPYWRITERS - SITTING: Tom Nesvig, Lila Eckberg, John MacKenzie STANDING: Burtman Johnson, Kristi Olmanson, Christine Lund, (missing) Carol Gilbertson, Carol Sjostrom Junior Editors: Dick Keller, Mary Swenson; Business Manager: Junior Nyman; Advisor: Mr. Hart Editor: Katie Beaumont MAKE-UP - SITTING: Marilyn Nelson, Joyce Osborne, Joanna Carlson, Dar Purrier STANDING: Dick Steppel, Pat Wintheiser (missing) We hope the annual you have enjoyed, Many an hour we have employed. We're sorry if we've misspelled your name. And hope your picture will bring you fame. We're sorry for the mistakes we've made, And hope it’s the good things you have weighed. At times we thought we would give up, When we'd get in one of those big mix-ups. The worst thing of all was the deadline to meet, When many a problem we'd have to greet. Many a time when night took a peek, There you'd find us behind a week. Now don't get us wrong, those on the staff, Have really enjoyed many a laugh. All in all it's been lots of fun, A few more pages, and we're all done. 81 The long, hard road of our high school career began August 29, 1956. After the first football game the seniors welcomed us at the Bermuda Bop by letting us in free. Following tradition the freshman boys collected wood for the Homecoming bonfire. The Hillbilly Hop, sponsored by the freshmen, was probably the most successful dance of the year in terms of money and fun. Towards the end of the first six weeks we elected Marilyn Nelson, president; Arthur C'avara, vice president; Sam Smith, secretary; Thomas Stevens, treasurer. Sharon Gjerde was lucky enough to become a B-squad cheerleader. Patricia Nelson was the only freshman to get a part in the one-act play. Of course the rest of us took part in the other extra-curricular activities that were open to us. The next turn on our road led us to the new high school. After four and one half months of vacation we were all quite eager to get back. The officers for our sophomore year were: Tho- mas Stevens, president; Burtman Johnson, vice president; Lila Eckberg, secretary; Patrick Wint- heiser, treasurer. The first dance held in the new school was the sophomore sponsored Jailhouse Rock. By this time members of the class were participating in almost every activity in school. One of the highlights of the year for the lucky few chosen was serving for the prom. We finished the year in grand style with a hayride for all the members of the class. The junior year started out with a bang! Our magazine drive broke all records by selling $2,100 worth of magazines. The undefeated football team was the talk of the town. Marilyn Nelson and Kristi Olmanson were the lucky girls chosen as junior attendants for the 1958 Home- coming. The Christmas Dance with the theme Central Park was a real success. Immediately after Christmas we chose Mardi Gras” as our prom theme. The most memorable part of the prom was all the hard work on Ambrose the dragon only to find he wouldn't fit in the gym. We entered our fourth turn in the road with president, John Ehlers; Margaret Thisius, vice president; Carol Gilbertson, secretary; Kathrine Beaumont, treasurer. Dennis Davis was elected student council president. Our first class activity for the year was a dance to welcome the sopho- mores. Through mud, snow, rain or sunshine our team emerged (again undefeated). At home- coming we Jammed the Jimmies with a score of 20-13. Queen, Melanie Paul, reigned over the activities. With the coming of winter basketball and wrestling began, and other activities also began to roll. Chicago was the destination of the band's four day trip. The senior class play was a big hit. Skip day found us all out of school on miscellaneous picnics, trips, and other pleasures. The juniors scrimped and saved to put on the 1960 prom. All the seniors agreed that it was the second best prom they had ever attended. At last the great night came - Graduation. There was a mixture of emotions as we walked up to receive our diplomas. Of course, some were happy and relieved; but all of us were a little sad when we thought of all the memories we had from St. Peter High School - such as worn out shoes from racing to the lunch line, all the broken locks and lockers and many more. Now as we go into the world, we will strive to follow our motto, written in the class colors of blue and silver above the platform, It is a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness. 82 LINDALEE ADAMS Library Club 3,4; Peter Patter 3.
