■f This annual is respectfully dedicated to Mr. Earl Erickson who has given so much of his time and music to St. Peter High School. Uu: c csT-Cst nr XC C CCL a rrL- n L,AsLcjL CCcZ-'- • J. CC 2 MR. MERTON KIRBY Treasurer MRS. WILLIAM MacKENZIE Chairman MR. E. C. TRIMBO Clerk School Board Though seldom seen by the student body, the school board is a vital part of every school district. These important people are needed to represent the people of St. Peter in the operation of our schoo'ls. Their time is occupied by many meetings discussing such problems as paying for our new school, the budget, overcrowded classrooms, school policies, and . . . the budget. MR. ROBERT HALL MR. OLE HAUCEJORDE MR. HOWARD NELSON Administration Faculty To our class, the administration and faculty have been a beacon light along the dark and winding path of higher education. To us, they have been not just our mentors but have been lasting and loyal friends, always ready to be of assistance. In their capable hands we have received guidance and teaching of a high order. Among the pleasant memories which we will carry through life will be the contact which we have had with the faculty and administration during our high school years. 7 MRS. ARDYCE WORRELL MR. BYRON LIVINGSTON MRS. CAROL MANS Special recognition is given to Mr. Roy Lindenberg. “Tuddie” will be remembered always for the understanding and guid- ance he has given the senior class. He can truly be called the Father of the Class of 1959. The cooks, besides performing their job well, have become our good friends. We will carry the memory of their smiling faces long after we leave St. Peter High. Another group which we will remember long after we leave is the custodians. They have come to our rescue many times when we were in need of help, besides keeping the school in spotless order. Custodians Seniors Seniors Our class motto, “Fields Are Won by Those Who Believe in Winning,” might well be the inspiration of our entire high school career, rather than a mere senior graduation motto. We chose the white rose as our class flower and picked White and Gold as our class colors. Our advisors during the final year of our high school life were Mrs. Chillstrom and Mr. Gollesch. Our Senior Class Officers were Mark Davis, president; Suzanne Kozita, vice-president and Carol Meyer, secretary- treasurer. We’ve only crossed the bay of life Before us lies the sea. We’ll sail our ship through every strife Though rough the ocean be. Our high school days we’ll treasure dear. Four years of work and play. Our knowledge growing year by year, And then we slip away. Our Freshman days were hard and long, Our minds were rather blank, But we slowly crept along, And obtained a-higher rank. One year older then were we. Sophomores was our name. Just a class of busy bees, Slowly gaining fame. We’re big, we’re bright, we’re Juniors gay, So full of joy and pep. We studied hard to clear the way, For our last and final step. We’re mighty Seniors one and all. We climbed our stairs at last. We went slowly not to fall. But let no others pass. We each will go our separate ways. From friends we must depart, But those precious High School Days, We’ll cherish in our heart. Juniors Vice-President, Arthur Cavara; Treasurer, Kristi Olmanson; Secretary, Carol Sjostrom; President, Pat Wintheiser. This year’s Junior Class is bigger and busier than ever be- fore. We reached a goal of S2,00 in our magazine sales, which set a new record. Our class play, “Life of the Party,’ was a great success. At Christmas time we sponsored the annual Christmas Dance. Our next great project was the Prom, which provided a good ending for a great year. 36 CHEERLEADERS—Carolyn Cole, Peg Thisius, Marilyn Nelson. Melanie Paul. Sharon Gjerde. F IRST ROW: Anita Martens. Sparked by a fine infield, the Saints upset Fairmont as the high point of the season. Track The Track team led by Russ Lager, who set a new con- ference record in the High Jump, ended their season with a successful 6-4 record and a respectable third in the con- ference. Led by David Gustafson, the netters successfully maintained their monopoly-like hold on the Conference Title. Although the Tennis team lost a few matches this year, for the first time in three years, and were decided underdogs, they pulled through with a thrilling semi-finals doubles match to win. Andy Hanson and Sid Smart upset the favorite in the doubles category and enabled the Saints to take their fourth straight conference title. Not losing a single man. the Netmen should be favorites to win their fifth title in a row in 1959. The golf team finished its most successful season in history by winning the Con- ference and District Titles and finishing with an undefeated season. Tom Anderson won individual honors fit the Conference while the team easily took its third title in four years. Tom Stevens won the district at Le Sueur as the golfers placed three men in the Region. Stevens, along with Anderson and Mike Manual, placed well in the Region at Anoka. Prospects look even greater this year as the golfers try to protect their thirteen game winning streak. The highlight of the season was the District 13 Championship. 49 A CAPT. TOM WITTY Football With the addition of a new coach, in Don Miller and a new offense in the winged T, the high school football team went through the season with an undefeated record. The Saints, combining an unstoppable offense with a strong defense, finished the season undefeated for the first time since 1943. In preseason picks. St. Peter was expected to occupy the bottom of the South Central Conference. A well-balanced attack and sole determination sent the Saints on 9 straight wins and a conference championship. The high point of the season, which saw many, was the Fairmont game. At the time, both teams were rated in the top 25 in the state. The Saints, after having Fair- mont score on them early in the first quarter, passed for two of their own and won the important contest 14-6, Jr IRS I ROW: Don Lind, Don Canfield. It was the best effort of a St. Peter team in District play since 1952 when they went to the finals of the region. With Montgomery and St. Peter playing for third place the Saints pulled a last second rally to win. During the season the unpredictable Saints had a 6-12 record and finished tied for third in the conference. The Saints were led by Al Annexstad and Don Canfield at the guards, and Russ Lager, Mark Davis, and Denny Davis in the front line. Coach Chuck Stoesz started his first year as the head basketball coach at St. Peter. He had previously coached at Garden City and attended Mankato State College. 54 Letterman s Club The Letterman’s Club, organized for the betterment of athletics is one of the oldest clubs in the school. Under the direction of Mr. Smart, the Junior Class play was presented on November 13 and 14 in the Little Theater. The Hughes family has just moved to But- terfield where they have met new people and are adjusting themselves to the new situations in a lively manner. After Jean arranges a party at the suggestion of Mike Tisdale she decides to he the life of the party. And what a party! All in all, it led to a very confusing nite and an exciting play. One-Act Play “The Bishop’s Candlesticks” is the title of this year’s one-act play. It is a deeply moving drama based upon an incident in Victor Hugo’s novel, “Les Miserables.” Again this year the play was double cast with two actors competing for each part. The contest cast is as follows: Jack Dranttel plays the Bishop with Christine Lund as his sister Persome. Sid Smart plays a thief and Ronald Johnson plays the part of a gendarme. Jane Doran plays the part of Marie, a young girl servant. Burtman Johnson, Marilyn Nelson, and Melanie Paul are members of the alternate cast. 69 Thespians The National Thespian Society, under the di- rection of Mr. Smart, helps to promote better dramatics in St. Peter High School. It is a non-social and non-secret society organized for students who have done outstanding work in plays. The 1958-59 officers are Jack Dranttel, President; Sid Smart, Vice-President; and Suzie Kozitza, Secretary-Treasurer. It is sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. The students from our high school met with students from all over the state to study government and citizenship. The unique thing about this is that they study by actually putting the lessons into practice. The representatives are selected by the student body and faculty on the basis of scholarship, character, and leadership. All year, the editors have been losing sleep over deadlines; the make- up staff has been going around in circles; the copy writers have been at a loss for words; the typists have been typing up a storm; the art staff has been working on dividers; the photographers have developed quite well; and the business staff, under the management of Ron Johnson, has managed its business very well. The result is a tired staff and a completed annual. COPY WRITERS-FIRST ROW: Marge Lurth, Tom Anderson. MAKE UP STAFF—FIRST ROW: Helen Miller, Ruth Frey. Peter Patter “The only newspaper in the world devoted exclusively to the students and events at St. Peter High School” is the “Peter Patter.” Under Miss McCormick, the advisor, the staff puts out one issue a month. The staff consists of an editor-in-chief, assistant editor, feature editor, news editor, and circulation manager. There are sixteen news reporters, eleven feature writers, four sports writers, eight typists, three proofreaders, three artists and a pro- duction staff of five members. One of the chief goals of this year’s staff is to get names of people in the paper who ordinarily never see their names in print. 82 FIRST ROW: Carol Lund, Nan- cy Mettler, Gretchen Kaisersatt, Jack DrantteL SECOND ROW: I aura Well brock. Members participate each week in such sports as bowling, bas- ketball, table tennis, volleyball, and skating. Awards are given according to the total amount of points earned each year. Under the supervision of Mrs. Connie Meyer, the club is very active in St. Peter High School. Pep Club School spirit is the main goal of the Pep Club. It is made up of Junior and Senior High girls. They meet with the cheerleaders to learn new yells and present them to the student body. The skits that the Pep Club put on help to boost the morale of the team. Cheering and enthusiasm at the games would be lost if it were not for the Pep Club. SONG GROUP HEX DAY 89 Library Club This year the Library Club has been in charge of the noon hour program in the li- brary. They have visited the Mankato High School Library and Mankato State Library. They won a prize for their float in the Home- coming Parade. Mr. “Casey” Dowling supervises the F.F.A. as they carry out their many activ- ities. These activities include learning new and scientific methods of farming. In their work, they learn about livestock and crops. They also go on many judging and demon- stration trips. The F.F.A. is primarily for those boys who plan to go into farming or other fields of agriculture. Junior-Senior Pro 958 With a banquet in Hawaii, the juniors and seniors began their trip “Around the World.” The next stop was an English theatre where the entertainment included the Magnatones, reading of the prophecy, and the girls’ octet singing “Deep Purple.” France, the land of sidewalk cafes, country gardens and wishing wells was the next stop. There the couples danced to the music of Don Deane. A Swedish smorgasbord and dancing at the golf course was another step in the journey. Last, but not least, the group went to an American movie, which climaxed a most exciting and dreamy evening. 92 PETERIAN SPONSORS Adolphson Shoe Store A. H. Hermel Co.
