Text from Pages 1 - 68 of the 1952 volume:

2 IN MEMORIAM In loving memory of Sheldon Whose earnest smiles we shall miss. His vacant chair in the assembly Leaves us sadly bereft. When the afternoon shadows begin to fall. And a red glow creeps up in the western sky, We sit in the old assembly hall And watch the students passing by. We look at their fresh young faces. And hark to each merry word, For to us the students' own language Is the sweetest 'er was heard. And so we sit near the doorway, In the closing hours that we love best. And think as we see them passing, That Sheldon will come with the rest. And yet Sheldon comes not. And we think he has missed the way. And strayed from this cold, dark country. To one of perpetual day. We think that the angels have found him, And, loving him better than we, Have begged the Good Father to keep him Right on through eternity. But we long to enfold him, To ruffle our hands through his hair, To feast our starved souls on his smiles, To hear his feet on the stairs. Ah, we are but poor selfish mortals, And our hearts starve, though we know That Sheldon is drinking the nectar, From lilies in heaven that glow. Some day I am sure we shall find him. But the road is so lonesome between, Our spirit grows sick and impatient, For twilight's last closing gleam. Until then we shall sit in the assembly. In the hours that we love best. And think when the students are passing by, That Sheldon, too, will come with the rest. 3 BOARD OF EDUCATION A. W. Cook Director N. P. Langsjeon Treasurer W. H. MacKenzie Clerk The board of Education of any community must have the interest of its young people at heart in order to fully administer to their educational needs. The Board of Education of Independent School District Number One of St. Peter is very well represented from business and economic fields in the community, and has performed its tasks to the best of its ability. Our school district is quite fortunate in having its educational needs admin- istered by this representative group of the people. 4 THOMAS ANNEXSTAD Tom Band 1,2,3,4; Orchestra 1,2,3,4; Swing Band 1,2,3,4; Pep Band l;German Band 3,4; Tuba Solo 2,3; March- ing Band 1; Lettermen's Club 3,4; Thespians 2,3,4; Discussion 3,4; One Act Plays 2,3,4; Class Play 3; Student Council 2,3; Class President 2,3; National Honor Society 3,4; Pep Club 3; Boys' State 3; Foot- ball 1,2,3,4; Track 1,2,3,4; Intramural 1,2,3,4; Home- coming Committee 1; Server for Prom 1. The class was well represented :ies and other organizations. Around fbrated our first Leap Week. The year was close by an exciting swimming party at Carolyn Olson. Lorraine WillartandBob Hiniker joined the class that year. Howard Nelson and Ted Miller acted as advisors. In our Junior year, Tom Annexstad was elected president: Charles Frawley was chosen as vice-president ; Beverly Martens as secretary and Marjorie McCarthy, treasurer. Karen Sandelin and Bruce Klitzke brought our problems to the Student Council. New class members this year were Darell Ohman and Robert Hanson. Janet Zoller came up with the winning homecoming slogan Waseca We Seek-A-Victory , and Ardella Bjorklund and Beverly Martens were two happy girls when they were chosen homecoming attendants. The big event of the fall was that wonderful success, Little Women , our class play produced under the direction of Miss Helen Droesslar. Several of the class also had parts in the operetta Sunbonnet Sue . Mrs. Chillstrom took over the position of principal when Mr. Eastmen was called up for active duty with the National Guard. The one act play. Dust of the Itoad , went to the regional contest, boasted three Juniors in its cast. We were also well represented at the regional speech and debate contests. The big event that we had all been looking forward to came at last, namely, the Prom . Under the able and willing direction of our advisors, Miss Tussing and Mr. Boyum, the prom gradually took shape. The theme was Creamer's Holiday and the program was in the form of a play written by the Juniors. Thespian and National Honor initia- tions and the selection of Girls' and Boys' Staters, Adele Johnson and Tom Annexstad, together with music contests and all the various sports made this a most eventful year. The fact that Miss Droessler decided to leave us to teach in Japan, made us sad. The year ended with a rip roaring picnic at Minneopa park. The first day we were Seniors, we elected as president, Robert Gran: vice-president, Beverly Martens; secretary-treasurer, Adele Johnson; and Student Council representatives, Beverly Matson and Charles Frawley. Later Chuck Frawley was replaced by Tom Annexstad. We worked hard on our last Homecoming and produced two floats for the parade. Karen Sandelin submitted the winning homecoming slogan and Beverly Martens reigned as queen over the Homecoming festivites. The football team certainly made us proud by placing second in the Conference. This was also the year in which we welcomed our new principal, Mr. McKinney. Miss Giffei was also added to the faculty as English and German instructor and we were very happy to get Mrs. Chillstrom back to the Social Science classroom. The Senior Class Play, under the direction of Miss Giffei, turned out to be a big success. On Thursday, May 29, the 76 members of our class, marched down the aisle of the G.A. Memorial Fieldhouse to receive their diplomas. Mid tears of farewell and smiles for the future the Seniors of 52 bid farewell to their dear Alma Mater with the thought of returning often in body and spirit to the familiar halls of St. Peter High School. 18 Beverly Adams Nancy Adolphson Audrey Anderson Jerome Apple Donald Ballman Helen Birr Marie Birr Gary Bonderson Sharon Boucher Mary Bravo Alfred Brodd Walton Bruns James Cahill Vivian Cheney Barbara Churchill Charles Colberg Vincent Danielson Joanne Davis David Dickie Janis Fischer Alene Fitzke Pernell Gault Frances Glass Mary Ann Gleason Carol Hanson Janet Hanson Keith Hanson John Holz Dennis Hummel Douglas Johnson Grace Johnson Sandra Johson 19 Janice Kaveney Wayne Kaveney Reinold Keller Margaret Knutson Betty Kopp Gardia Lee Lois Leonard Rosalie Lindberg John Livingston Dorothy Lofstrom Margie Lunak Joann Lundgren Richard Lurth Paul Maas Beverly Magdanz Colleen Mans Gayla Manuel Charles Miller Janet Miller Thomas Miller Jean Moeckel Bette Nelson Ellsworth Nelson Leonard Nelson Joe Pankratz- -_ LaVonne Pell Clinton Peters Lois Peterson Ramona Peterson David Poncin Catherine Prom Lorraine Quirk 20 Betty Redning Elaine Redning John Rilling John Rheaume Donald Rodell Kenneth Rydeen Lloyd Sanderson Annabelle Sasse Joanne Schtnit Lorna Schultz Jeanne Selleseth Jerry Sjostrom Jean Steppel James Stoffel Gerald Swenson Rernard Thieman Donna Thorson - Curtis Triplett Shirley Van Zee Barbara Walter Douglas Webster Lois Wilstermann Richard Witty Lester Wolfe 21 SOPHOMORES ht: John Dranttel, Barbara Lurth, Vivian Hutterer, Jacquilyn Dillon, Mary Ann Borsch, Donna Ison, Rose Kendall, Lowell Anderson, Marvin Keogh. Spirit was added to the occasion by colorful balloons and surshess which were sold to the student body by the seniors. The band show at the game was most entertaining, but the high light of the half-time performance was the presentation of Queen Bev Martens and her attendants Barb Walters and Bev Magdanz. Pre v ious to the ga me, enthusiasm ha d been aroused at the traditional bonfire, snake dance, and midnight movie and the parade. This year's Homecoming Parade was unique in that the Queen's float did not fall apart until the parade was completed. Many alumni and high school students witnessed the coronation when Roger Schmidt escorted Queen Bev up to the throne where Charles Frawley had the honor of crowning herQueenofthe 1951 Homecoming. The student council presented her with a silver bracelet as a remembrance. After the crowning ceremony, Jerry Winch's band provided dreamy music to which the alums and students danced. 34 ii I'll “StacA ft 1 t V ♦ Vt I _ ▼,! ' . .▼ I I f s J U oi fit . r. ▼ U . These students meet with others, similarly chosen, from all over the state to study the principles of American govern- ment by setting up their mythical state and local communities. They first learn to appreciate and understand their rights, privileges and responsibilities as future citizens of their city, county, state and nation. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is a nation wide organization composed of students who have shown themselves worthy in fields of courage, service, leadership and scholarship. Johnson, an outstanding elementary teacher of St. Peter, was chosen as last years honorary mem- ber. Other honorary members who have been selected in past years are Mrs. Signe Chillstrom, Mr. Seeley Eastman and Mr. H. G. Hegdal. Mr. McKinney, our principal, is the adviser of this organization. The Future Farmers of America, or F.F.A. as it is commonly known , is the national organization of, by, and for boys Studying vocational agriculture in public secondary schools under the provisions of the National Vocational Edu- cational Acts. The F.F.A. is an intra-curricular activity having its origin and root in a definite part of the school curriculum- vocational agriculture. Among other things, members learn, through active participation, how to conduct and take part in a public meeting; to speak in public; to buy and sell co-operativly; to solve their own problems; to finance themselves; and to assume civic responsibility. The foundation upon which the Future Farmers of America organiza- tion is built includes leadership and character development, sportsmanship, co-operation, service, thrift, scholarship, improved agriculture, organized recreation, citizenship and patriotism. The Future Farmers of America exists today because of a co-operative spirit and a desire on the part of farm boys, fourteen to about twenty-one years of age, preparing for farming through vocational agriculture, to have a national organization of their own in which they may secure practical business experience, act as their own instrue tors, and enjoy the fellowship of one another. It is organized, vocational education on a farm youth level. Improved agriculture, better local communities, a more satisfying farm home life, and more efficient farmer-citizens are emerging as a result of the boys' experiences. The St. Peter Chapter, composed of thirty-eight members, is one of two hundred in the State of Minnesota. There are about eight thousand members in the State at the present time. There are thirty-seven members with the Green- hand degree and one Chapter Farmer -- Robert Hiniker. The Greenhand degree is the first degree obtainable, followed by the Chapter Farmer degree, then the State Farmer, and, finally, the American Farmer degree. Each year two per- cent of the state membership may receive the State Farmer degree and only one boy in one thousand may receive the American Farmer Degree. The boys have farm programs to carry on as part of their work. Records of efficiency are kept, and the learning process of each boy is correlated with his program on the farm.
