Smith -, Q w Q R Wi ka The Propylean Literary Society The Propylean Literary Society this year held eleven meetings in which various literary exercises were performed admirably. The society had nineteen members from the fourth form, and was advised by Mr. Church. Iohn Burt was President, and Harold Talbott secretary. Debates and symposiums improved throughout the year, as did the quality of the poetry which was attempted by many in the society. The Cadmean The Cadmean Literary Society was outstandingly successful in broadening the scope of its artistic exercises this year. The talent and ingenuity of its members in such things as ballad-singing, exhibitions of paintings, piano-playing, etc. complimented the custom- ary poems, essays, and short stories, and greatly benefitted the whole society. The Cadmean also decided this year, on Mr. Higgins' suggestion to elect its officers entirely from the student body. Consequently, Mr. Higgins took on the title of 'Faculty Advisor' in lieu of President, and the major responsibilities of running the society were relegated to the student members. This new organization in the society worked out ex- tremely well, and the members seemed not only willing, but also capable to take on the responsibility. The meetings of the second half of the year were marked with more enthusiasm and active participation than were the meetings of the first half, and the year ended on a note of general satisfaction. The Concordian The Concordian's year was marked by a series of lively meetings, spirited debates, and carefully prepared papers, culminating in a winning of the annual Ioint Debate. The Concordian supplied three debaters to the S.P.S. debating team: Glenn, Iams, and Bron- son. Iams and Bronson debated against Groton, a debate which the School lostg Glenn debated against Exeter, a debate which the School won. Glenn, Horne and Evarts were the Concordian team which defeated the Cadmean Society team. ...bil WV . 1 V V 'fl Q X9 ,bl .,agiz'S- fm 90 Q..--V ' lll l ? . f eww ew 4 xxx ' V' ., ,. ,xi X 2 MV K .b v i t . ff--lf . ., 9 f. I A .3 Missionary Society During the year the Missionary Society worked well at its usual activities: the Concord Project, the Bookstores, and newspapers. The Second-hand Bookstore netted several hundred dollars more than has ever been taken in the past. Achievements such as these marked much of the year. The biggest job of the Society, the Mish Fair, was both an economic and popular success. Credit should be given to Horan and Gordon for the time and effort that they contributed. The Mish was fortunate during the year to have excellent speakers, who covered a great variety of the missionary activities of the Church. Both Mr. Peters and Mr. Hoofnagle helped make the year a success. It was with much regret that the Mish learned that they would not return in September, but the Mish is confident that Mr. Shoemaker, who is to take this place, will do an excellent job. La Iunta 1954-55 was truly a banner year for La Iunta. There was a decisive increase in the number of members and for the Hrst time in the history of the society, a dinner was held at the end of the year. The three advisors deserve special credit for making the year a successful one. Without the help of Mr. Phillips, Srs. Ordonez and Rubio, La Iunta would not have ended the year on such a high note. Sr. Rubio deserves added praise for the work he put into the organization, not only in acquiring outside speakers for several of the meetings but also for the work he did in directing a one act play and furthering interest in La Iunta. This year differed from preceding ones in that Spanish papers were dropped from the meeting's agenda. In their place were added more movies, slides and outside speakers. It was La Iunta's pleasure to have for its first meeting of the winter term, Sr. lose Amor y Vazquez, who gave a very enlightening talk accompanied with slides, on Cuba the Pearl of the Antilles. Two meetings later La Iunta was fortunate to have as a guest singer, Miss Si si Shotten. She accompanied herself on the guitar and sang several Mexican and Spanish songs. For the final meeting of the year La Iunta had a banquet at Millville Inn. At this banquet the officers for next year were elected: Lee Dewey, president, Gus Iaccaci, secretary-treasurer. Le Cercle Francais The Cercle Francais had, as usual, a stimulating year. The entertainment included such things as short lectures with colored slides given by those who had passed part of their summers abroad, two of the customary 'radio programs' which include almost everything from a report on the contemporary political scene in France to a presentation of some comic radio play, and from the recitation of repre- sentative French poetry to a concert of representative French music, and the habitual amount of short stories and essays. A medieval farce was also put on by the members, and an occasional group singing was performed. Several documentary Elms, and two movies were shown in the Hall. In general, the year was not only very pleasant and enjoyable, but also very informative, since one of the primary aims of the Cercle is to stimulate among its members an interest in French culture. Next year the student members will take on the major responsibility of running the society's affairs. The Cercle looks forward to next year, consequently, with some trepidation, but it is, in most ways, ready and willing to accept the added responsibility. The annual dinner was highly successful, and was a very Htting and satisfying conclusion to an excellent year. Art Association This year the Art Association has had several fruitful programs. There were two print sales, each of which showed the increasing interest in art by the astoundingly large sales. For the First time the Association exchanged paintings with a Iapanese high school. The final exhibit of the School's work, displayed at Anniversary, showed an unusual diversity in subject matters and techniques. The School is becoming increasingly interested in art, and the Art Association is more than partly responsible for this movement. we K 1 A LA IUNTA c. The playing, though often sloppy and hindered by poor field conditions, was hard and spirited. The Hrst team series was won by the Old Hundreds, with eleven returning lettermeng the Delphians and Isthmians were second and third respectively. The underrated Isth- mian team showed promise, but never realized its potential. They were, nonetheless, a continual threat with Captain Evarts' passing and Lee's line running. Their line, although inexperienced, did a creditable job, Dewey's fine offensive and defensive play standing out. The Delphians' fast and hard driving backlield of Wagstafff, Weaver, and co-captains Hatfield and Howe were protected by a strong line of Britton, Seay, Emery, and Mc- Leod. This team was a constant and threatening contender for the first team series all season, losing to the Old Hundreds only in the very last game. The Old Hundreds started their season slowly, but gradually came to dominate the football picture. Their backfield of Iackson, Morse, Hurlbut and Captain Ward, could not be stopped. The line of Wilmerding, Donald, Adams, Cheston, Kneeland, Horan, and Thouron, was fast and powerful. With this strong combination, the Old Hundred soon established themselves as undisputed champions. The usual six lower teams were reduced to five, because of the great draw to soccer, but the competition was hard-fought and close everywhere. The Second and Fifth team series were won by the Delphiansg the Old Hundreds won the Third team championship and the Isthmians won the Fourth. Due to the new three game schedule, the football season extended well into Novem- ber. The SPS team was composed of nine Old Hundreds, five Delphians, and one Isth- mian, with Ward elected as captain. This was a fitting climax to a long and exciting foot- ball season. III: Iiiilhmuk, I., Ir.: Soccer With the remarkable increase of players, the intramural system was enlarged by the introduction of a complete second-term series, and a IV School team was created to give the boys a greater opportunity to have both more club and outside competition. The George Cup was won easily by the Old Hundreds, while the Delphians won the second team series. The S.P.S. squad is to be congratulated for its outstanding success, having com- pleted its first undefeated season. The team was very fortunate to have had a strong nucleus of returning players with which to overpower their opponents. The scores speak for themselves: the opening game against Brooks ended in a tie, 1-I, but Governor Dum- mer and Holderness were defeated, 3-og Dublin 2-rg and New Hampton 6-o. These impressive victories were due largely to the tremendous offensive attack: the lirst line of Elliman, Boulton, and Pierce is considered the best ever produced here at School. They exhibited not only their individual talents, but also worked effectively as a team. But they would not have had the opportunities without the support of the strong half-back line, led by Ferguson, and the fullbacks, Lloyd and Edwards, whose long kicks effectively and constantly set the opponent back. Captain Stebbins was almost errorless in the goal, and without his tremendous punts, the team's attack would have been much slower in forming. Thus, with wonderful spirit and continued aggressiveness, the soccer season was very rewarding. But no word would be complete without expressing a great debt towards Mr. Coliin Whose enthusiasm and tireless coaching has done so much to produce the qual- ity of soccer that now exists at St. Paul's. - SQ W J 8 3 F T w- -we-3 Ai it . ,' 71 E .p an - 4 A :ips sry at I J sa sw sg spy S.P.S. S P S Cross Country This fall marked the second year of Minor Sport recognition for cross country. Twenty members, including twelve competitors and one returning letterman, was as large a turnout as could be expected. They lost to Penacook, 33-22, but after more train- ing beat Concord, 25-3o, and Exeter I.V., 19-36. The organized season ended with a close return match against Penacook, lost by a score of 29-26, within 300 yards of the finish. A third match was scheduled, but not run. Boots Coleman, the season's best runner, was elected next year's Captain. Five runners went to Exeter for the Interscholastic. As expected the performance was below par, but we hope this will be improved in the future. The season had an ambition, unity, and fulfillment of its own, and with Coleman, Young, and Barclay returning, the team is sure to gain in strength and recognition, in seasons to come. i x .Xia-n l. y iff 2' Z s ' gl 51 -.3535 , i 0 if P ' Y 3 .Qi ' ...L dwg 1' J. ' if Hockey Although a five and four season is seldom a spectacular one, the St. Paul's team this year was far better than the statistics would show. With nearly a month's practice on the new artihcial rink, the team defeated Princeton on Garden ice, 5-3, and went on to down Northwood and Choate, before losing to Taft in the Hnals of the Lawrenceville Tournament. Captain Lloyd was a unanimous selection for the all-tournament team, defenseman Morris Cheston and goalie Sam Adams were also elected. The first game after the vacation was a disappointing C4-3D loss to Andover, in which the team was un- able to maintain a one-goal lead. During the week an inexperienced Exeter team was defeated, 3-1, in yet another sloppy game. Saturday saw Harvard skate all around SPS, and win a decided 5-2 victory. But SPS was improving steadily, and although they lost 2-o to Dartmouth on Wednesday, they were scrappier, playing much better hockey. Finally they reached their peak, and on Dance Weekend, Yale fell victim to a 4-2 on- slaught, in which the SPS team, inspired by Lloydls wonderful play, forced the game all the way. During the year, McLean, Schley and Wilmerding were effective and ag- gressive as wings, and Morris Cheston played a determined game at defense. Ted Ward deserves great credit for his steady, dependable defense play throughout the season, which earned him the Hockey Medal. B Squad had a 2-0 season, defeating the Andover IV's 7-1 and Holderness 8-1. The game with Kimball Union was tied 1-1 when it was called because of the inclement weather. In the Club Series, the Isthmians were undefeated, squeezing out the OH 1-o in a sudden death overtime in the first game, and coming from behind in the last half of the third period to win 3-1 in the second. The Delphians, handicapped by a lack of depth, managed to pull within one goal of the OH, before losing the series. ips .- ,ka . . .Q Qi -X91 no 1.25: PAU1., gx. YAUZJ- PAQ , uw S S.P.S. Rulwrtx Basketball The season was not as successful as anticipated. Four lettermen returned, led by Captain Roy Iackson, but the team managed to win only half of its games. In its first encounter, S.P.S. swept over Noble 8: Greenough by a score of 57-40, only to lose its next two games, 44-70 at Belmont Hill, and 30-46 at Governor Dummer. Up to this point the team's weaknesses were mainly poor passing and unnecessary fouling. Eager to correct these faults and avenge their losses, the team scored an impressive, upsetting victory over Middlesex, 44-28. Continuing its drive, S.P.S. easily defeated Holderness 60-37, and beat the Kimball Union team, 45-35. However, this winning streak was halted by the loss to a very strong Penacook team, 55-41. The S.P.S.-Brooks game, which was the last of the season, was won by Brooks, 72-40. The season, marked by generally bad passing and fouling, ended with a 4-4 record. Credit goes to Captain Iackson for his all-around ability in leading the team, and to the able coaching of Mr. Beust. Next year's captain is Don Morrow. I. V. Basketball With the welcomed increase in basketball enthusiasts, a I.V. team was organized and coached by Mr. Shoemaker. The season was highly successful, with only the opening game against Governor Dummer marring a victorious record. The team went on to win their last three games, defeating Middlesex, 25-233 Holderness, 38-7, and Penacook, 23-19. Wrestlhig Wrestling, under the fine coaching of Mr. Treuchet, thrived in its first interscholastic competition. The team, composed mostly of novices, developed rapidly with the aid of practice sessions with Exeter and Andover. In the first wrestling meet ever to be held at S.P.S., St. Paul's defeated Andover I. V., 24-10, in several close and exciting bouts. In the next home match, Lawrence Academy was severely beaten by a strong and more confident S.P.S. team. Increased interest in wrestling was mirrored by the enthusiastic and keen compe- tition in the inter-club matches which brought an end to the season. With a strong nucleus returning, the prospects are good for continued success next year. Squash The S.P.S. Squash team of Parham, Stebbins, Gordon, Toland, and Home experi- enced a mediocre season with a record of three wins and an equal number of losses. In its close opening match with Middlesex, S.P.S. lost by a score of three to two, at Exeter the team suffered its only major disappointment, losing 4-1, with Toland the isole victor, but they recovered at Andover and had little difficulty in winning 4-1. Dartmouth was beaten, 3-2, Parham and Gordon losing close matches, and the Harvard Freshmen were defeated 5-0. St. Paul's was host to the Interscholastic Tournament, which was won by Exeter. The addition of two new shells greatly helped the Hrst crews, enabling them to get off to a faster start on the season, a start which paid off May 28th at the Worcester Regatta. Seven crews were entered, among them Kent, Shrewsbury and Tabor. The week previous, Kent had set their School record for the mile, covering the distance in 41295, with Shrewsbury close behind. Since the St. Paul's crews were unknown quantities, Kent was rated as the crew to beat. Kent and the Shattucks got a length up on the rest of the fleet at the start, while the Halcyons dropped behir1d..A strong headwind brought the Shattuck power into play, and they took the lead, the Halcyons, rowing at a higher stroke, drew into second position in the second quarter. After this, Kent never threatened, and at the finish it was the Shattucks, followed by the Halcyons, Shrewsbury and Kent, respectively. The Shattucks also won the second crew race, beating Kent by a length at the Hnish. The Halcyons finished a respectable, but distant, third. The next week at Turkey Pond, it seemed like the Shattucks' day. With the ex- ception of a dead heat on the eighth, and a losing fourth crew, they swept through the afternoon, the second Shattucks won a decisive victory over the less powerful Halcyons. But the sun set in crimson after all. Two watches took the Halcyon start at 48, after the first ten strokes, they settled to a conservative 40 for the first quarter, dropped it to 38-37 for the second quarter, and finished at 39, with the Shattucks a desperate half-length behind. Both crews were well under the old record, and the Halcyon's time of four minutes Hat took a full 3.6 seconds off it. Great credit must be given to the Halcyon stroke and captain, Frank Lloyd, who did a magnihcent job with his fine crew during the race, and throughout the season. No word on crew is complete without acknowledging a great debt to Mr. Preston. It was he who developed the crews which won the Worcester Regatta, and set the new record, and it is to him that we express our gratitude. Gunnar Baldwin, the Shattuck captain, epitomized the spirit which made crew the success it was this season. Messrs. Rush, Lloyd and Lefebvre gave freely of their time and experience to see that all was smoothly run, and the coaches, Messrs. Higgins, Slesnick and Prudden, developed the crews which during the season defeated eights from Andover and Exeter. For the crew fraternity, it has been a successful season, and a happy one. b-iam.. 4 t gs...-. 4+ is , 53 ,- ss... , W 5' is ...ig t ear- W K at ,V .. , -. . . ,. ww.. ,Q , ,, ... ... .....-....- 'Y ...spun-p.... The biggest factor in this victory was Cheston's fine pitching, which was backed by the hitting of Captain Ward, Iackson and Packard. Mr. Lea's Delphians, led by Hatfield's excellent pitching, finished in second place. However, aside from Schley and du Pont, the Del- phians were weak at batting, and made many errors. The Isthmians, who placed third, lacked a good pitcher, and were very weak in the field. Captain Pope and Bonbright led them in hitting. In general, the season was marked by sloppy play, although the pitching was frequently excellent. The well-rounded Old Hundreds were definitely the best team. S. P. S. Baseball The S.P.S. team was one of the best in recent years. The hitting, fielding and pitch- ing were all above par. Hatfield gave a magnificent pitching performance, winning three games, and allowing no runs in the twenty-two innings that he pitched. In the opening game, Cheston went to the mound against a first-rate Governor Dummer team. A home run in the fifth inning gave the visitors the winning runs, as they shut out S.P.S. 3-o. Two days later, S.P.S. beat Noble and Greenough 7-0. St. Paul's second team beat Pena- cook 5-4, Smith and Edwards sharing the pitching. Next, the team traveled to New Hampton, where Hatfield, relieving Cheston, won the game, 6-4. The final game against Concord High, on Anniversary, was an appropriate end to a good season, S.P.S. winning, 2-o, in a close pitcher's duel. Outstanding for the team were Iackson, Cheston, Pope, Thouron, Bonbright and Captain Ward. Great credit is due coaches Lea and Beust for their hard task well done. ff AU 49401 'P u U , P 2 9 LS Y Us 1 l TP U A G pQULs 1PAUL Q, , 4, I fi S . I 11. Track Season The S.P.S. track team climaxed one of its most brilliant seasons with a hard-earned upset victory over Governor Dummer, 65-57. Not until the end of the half-mile relay race was the meet won. Iust a few minutes previously, Horan broke the old discus record with a throw of I20' 2 . After starting off the season with a win at the Exeter relays in the half mile relay Qwagstaff, Webber, Gordon. Boytll in 1:55-4, the team triumphed in a threeaway meet over Vermont Academy and Kimball Union, ?l4f'i, 475. 19. Seay missed the school record of 9' IUXH by a hair's breadth in the high iump. which was to elude him for the rest of the year. Then followed two fairly one-sided meets with Manchester Central and Concord High. Minus the pole-vault, the former lost, totl-5, while Concord fared little better on Dance weekend, 105-19. During the Manchester Meet, Wagstatf broke the broad iump mark, with a leap of ll' to . The lnterscholastic showed an immense improvement over last year's score. Boyd's win in the :zo and a third in the hundred plus Young's 'remarkable 4:46 mile contributed towards a third place in Class A with 21 points. Gordon, Sullivan, Seay, and Day also scored points in their events. A great deal of credit goes to Mr. Collier, Mr. Tracy, Mr. Read, Mr. Collin, Mr. Barker, and Mr. Ordonez for organizing and training their undefeated team and for devoting so much of their time and energy to the sport. To them the track team owes a great debt of gratitude. The Anniversary Meet The competition between the club track teams set three records. Gordon edged out Boyd to change the :zo yd. dash mark to 22.5 secs, and Day Finally conquered the 180 yd. low hurdles time at 21.4 secs., after missing the highs record by one tenth of a second. In the Iunior division, Steve Bar- ranco put the 8 lb. shot for the new distance of 45' 2l 3 . After taking a quick lead, which they lost to the Delphians the next day, the lsthmians were the low team with 45 points. The battle continued between the Old Hundreds and the lielphians, the Iuniors influencing both scores heavily. Dyer won the Iunior Pentathlon with two wins, a second and four thirds. For the Old Hundred, Capt. Gordon, Day, Horan and Sullivan paced the scoring: Iaccaci, Craw, and Capt. Webber led the lsthmians, and Wagstatl, Capt. Boyd and Young scored four wins for the Delphians. The Yale Cup was decided by the Half mile relay race, won by the Old Hundreds Qlackson, Horne, Day, Gordonj and the Hnal score of the meet stood: OH-72: D-712: I-45. S.P.S. TRACK Ixou One A. Lack of any one outstanding player was its greatest weakness, its depth was its greatest virtue. The team was made up of Meyer, Iglehart, Captain Don Morrow, Lovejoy, McLean, and McAlpin in that order. Kinnebrew, Hamm and Hunnewell were substitutes. Governor Dummer beat the S.P.S. team by the score of 6-3, Andover by the score of 8-1, and Exeter by the score of 9-0. The Team beat Mount Hermon 8-1 and Kimball Union 9-o. A match with the Dartmouth Freshmen was regretfully rained out. This rather undistinguished record was brightened by the team's performance at the Interscholastic, where it Finished fourth out of fourteen teams, Meyer and Iglehart reach- ing the semi-f-inals of the doubles tournament. Ward won the singles tournament for the second year, and Meyer and Iglehart won the doubles. S.P.S. TENNIS Row One: P. Iglehartg L. MeLeang A. Morrowg F. Lovejoy, Ir. 5 D. Meyer Row Two: D. The Club season got under way immediately, although only a few boys knew the fundamentals of the game. In this six game series, the Old Hundreds came out on top, losing only one game. The Isthmians were second, and the Delphians last. By virtue of their victory, the Old Hundreds won the Sixth Form of 1955 Lacrosse Trophy. When the Club season ended, the squad was divided into two units, the Reds and the Blues. These two clubs played their first outside game with the Boston Lacrosse Club, who trounced them, 8-o. They then played the two top club teams at Exeter. There the Blues won 4-2, while the Reds lost, Io-o. The final outside game was with Governor Dummer's IV team, which the S.P.S. team defeated Io-0, a fitting climax to a successful season. ,S LP, , 'z f if--Y..
