Rowing N rmportant development took place in rowing this year the spirit and enthusiasm which oarsmen have always had for crews on Long Pond has been transferred to Turkey While last year the physical shift occurred 1t was not t1ll this one that the sp1r1t of the great tradition on Long Pond was shifted with no loss of enthusiasm to Turkey Crew was able to start early almost a month before the accustomed time and spirit began almost immediately to grow toward Cf the climax of race day The Shattucks with nine men returning from last years first two crews seemed experienced not only on the first but throughout the club The Halcyons had a surplus of newcomers and with the increased length of prac tice time they counted on strength and power for all their eight crews Both Captain Sewall of the Shattucks and Captain Clark of the Halcyons encouraged and guided their clubs to foster that enthusiasm in each crew which means eflec shouted commands to oarsmen whose spirit became more and more fervent It was as always a case of matching the men for maximum power and smoothness A preview of Anniversary came at Worcester where both the Shattuck and Halcyon first crews did better than any other crews of which the School has boasted The Shattucks lost to Kent by but M4 of a length and the Halcyons were close behind This loss was due more to our inex perience in rowing the mile than to lack of ability and so both crews are to be greatly congratulated There was however more work to be done before race day and with the added experience both crews hoped to do well At last Anniversary arrived and with all the alumni watching on the shore nine highly successful races were run The organization and timing was astonishing and all the races were well rowed and very ex citing The Shattucks won the First crew by a length and the Halcyons won the majority by one crew which gives an indication of how close the competition really was The day was a fitting climax to a season of exceedingly hard work and spirited rowing When the captains of the winning crews accepted their cups and Iohn Sewall hoisted his Shattuck Hag it was the close of a superb year of rowing l ix I . n I I a a 1 , l - , y . - . . . , , . tiveness.
