N Platt D Wnlmtrdmg Scwall fCaptj D Watts W Hamm lx TaylorQCuxaw.11nJ SPS CRI W Smndmg I3 Vhlmtrdmg M Qlllllll A NVatts Suied H Clark N Platt I bcxxall Qbaptl NX Hamm G Patterson lx Taxlur fCoxsn.un7 Rowing N rmportant development took place in rowing this year the spirit and enthusiasm which oarsmen have always had for crews on Long Pond has been transferred to Turkey While last year the physical shift occurred 1t was not t1ll this one that the sp1r1t of the great tradition on Long Pond was shifted with no loss of enthusiasm to Turkey Crew was able to start early almost a month before the accustomed time and spirit began almost immediately to grow toward Cf the climax of race day The Shattucks with nine men returning from last years first two crews seemed experienced not only on the first but throughout the club The Halcyons had a surplus of newcomers and with the increased length of prac tice time they counted on strength and power for all their eight crews Both Captain Sewall of the Shattucks and Captain Clark of the Halcyons encouraged and guided their clubs to foster that enthusiasm in each crew which means eflec shouted commands to oarsmen whose spirit became more and more fervent It was as always a case of matching the men for maximum power and smoothness A preview of Anniversary came at Worcester where both the Shattuck and Halcyon first crews did better than any other crews of which the School has boasted The Shattucks lost to Kent by but M4 of a length and the Halcyons were close behind This loss was due more to our inex perience in rowing the mile than to lack of ability and so both crews are to be greatly congratulated There was however more work to be done before race day and with the added experience both crews hoped to do well At last Anniversary arrived and with all the alumni watching on the shore nine highly successful races were run The organization and timing was astonishing and all the races were well rowed and very ex citing The Shattucks won the First crew by a length and the Halcyons won the majority by one crew which gives an indication of how close the competition really was The day was a fitting climax to a season of exceedingly hard work and spirited rowing When the captains of the winning crews accepted their cups and Iohn Sewall hoisted his Shattuck Hag it was the close of a superb year of rowing l ix I . n I I a a 1 , l - , y . - . . . , , . tiveness. So from the beginning of the season oars flashed furiously and coaches s 9 ' 9 7 7 . , . 711'-' S P S TENNIS Siandzng L Ault G Sl ane Sealed I Brady G Bostwxck I Meyer CCaptJ W Breed S P S Tenms HE tennls team was except1onally good th1s year, losmg only to Exeter The team defeated the Dartmouth Freshmen Bostw1ck, Meyer, Breed Ault, and Sloane won the1r slngles matches The first doubles team of Bostw1ck and Meyer, th1s year s captam, won a close match, 7 5, 6-4 Thls was the only v1ctory 1n the doubles The next match was agamst Andover who had beaten S P S last year Wlth the same five men Wxnnmg 111 smgles, and BostW1ck Meyer and Ault Brady Wlnnmg doubles matches, the team Won, 7 to 2 The only loss of the season was to Exeter on the W1nners courts, 8 to I Ed Meyer was the only player to w1n h1s slngles, and we won no doubles The last match was an easy v1ctory for St Pauls, as the team defeated Mt Hermon, 8 to 1 Having had a look at some of the1r st1Hest compeutxon at Exeter, Bostwxck, Meyer, Breed and Ault returned to that school to d1st1ngu1sh themselves by gammg first place ID the team com pCt1t1On, and txed w1th Exeter Through the first three rounds the only St Paul s loss was Ault s Breed lost rn the fourth round, but Bostw1ck and Meyer, playrng beauuful tennrs, won rlght through the tournament unt1l the finals, where Bostw1ck won the champ1onsh1p In doubles one of the Exeter teams defeated the two smgles finahsts, and went on to wm 1n the finals, thus gam mg a t1e wlth St Pauls These players and the team, under Mr Burnhams d1rect1on th1s year, deserve great credrt for the1r fine showrng th1s year I. ,.0 .
